Ringgit rises for third day on softer US dollar following lower-than-expected CPI data

The Star3 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit extended its gains against the US dollar for the third straight day, as the greenback's safe-haven status weakened following lower-than-expected US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for July, which fuelled expectations of a September interest rate cut.
At 6 pm, the local note appreciated to 4.2040/2085 versus the US dollar, up 0.57 per cent from Tuesday's close of 4.2290/2320.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that the softer-than-expected US inflation rate of 2.7 per cent in July was largely driven by a moderation in the owner's equivalent rent (OER) to 4.1 per cent, after holding at 4.2 per cent for two straight months.
OER accounts for about 25 per cent of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) weightage, he said.
"It appears that a weak labour market and stable inflation rate would tilt the balance for the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting in September, as during July's meeting, there were two members in favour of a 25-basis point cut,' he told Bernama.
At the close, the ringgit ended lower against major currencies.
It fell versus the Japanese yen to 2.8554/8586 from Tuesday's close of 2.8490/8512, declined against the euro to 4.9305/9357 from 4.9090/9125 yesterday, and decreased vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.7078/7139 from 5.6905/6946.
The ringgit traded mixed against regional peers.
It strengthened versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2864/2902 from 3.2867/2893 at yesterday's close and appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.4/259.8 from 259.6/259.9.
However, the local note eased versus the Thai baht to 13.0276/0476 from 13.0135/0300 previously and was unchanged against the Philippine peso at 7.41/7.42. - Bernama

Former engineer turns to kantan farming, helps generate community economy

Photo by Bernama TAIPING - Who would have thought that plants that complement the flavours of dishes like asam pedas, laksa and kerabu could become a profitable source of income for those with the vision to seize the opportunity? For former engineer Abd Halim Abd Majid, 50, from Kampung Batu 9, Trong, venturing into "kantan' (torch ginger) farming not only provided a steady income but also opened doors to new agricultural opportunities, particularly in producing and selling kantan seedlings. As the Taiping Kantan Project Manager, Halim said the idea took root during the Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) after discussions with his partner, Mohammad Hazwan Mohamad Nor, 45, who had 15 years' experience in kantan cultivation. "A friend suggested we focus on producing kantan seeds instead of just planting for flowers. Hazwan encouraged me to try germinating seeds from the flower itself rather than using rhizomes like ginger or turmeric,' he said. Photo by Bernama In March 2022, the experiment succeeded, producing 800 seedlings in about three months, each reaching 20cm in height. Soon after, bulk orders came in - 300 plants at a time - confirming high market demand. To date, they have produced over 15,000 seedlings, marketed primarily through Facebook. Buyers now come from Perak as well as Muar, Gua Musang, Kuantan, Kedah, and Perlis. With growing demand, Halim extended opportunities to the "asnaf' (tithe recipients) and low-income groups, encouraging them to use their home yards for kantan seedling cultivation. He said several of the asnaf families were able to cultivate between 2,000 to 3,000 kantan seedlings. His team buys back their produce, thus helping to boost their household income. Seedlings sell for RM3.50 to RM60, depending on size and age. In 2023, they sold over 40,000 seedlings, yet demand still exceeds supply. They have since diversified into downstream products, including kantan flower sambal bilis, which has received an encouraging market response. Halim, who is also the deputy chairman of the Al-Akram Larut Matang and Selama Welfare Organisation (Pekebal), hopes to eventually take the product overseas. Meanwhile, Hazwan describes kantan as a hardy herbal plant with low disease risk, producing flowers within 12-14 months with proper care. Beyond seedlings, entrepreneurs also supply fresh kantan flowers - whether unopened, partially bloomed, or fully bloomed - to markets and wholesalers, priced around RM0.50 each. He expressed gratitude to the Perak Agriculture Department and other agencies for their support and encouraged more youth to enter the field. "Instead of leaving land idle, planting kantan is a better option. It's low-maintenance, offers steady demand, and can provide side income,' he said. - BERNAMA More Like This

Ringgit likely to trade around RM4. 20-RM4. 22 next week on uncertainties over US interest rates

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit is expected to hover between RM4.20 and RM4.22 next week as traders and investors remain cautious over the trajectory of US interest rates. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the release of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes next Thursday, Aug 20 (Wednesday, Aug 19, in the US) could offer more clarity on the state of the US economy, particularly after two FOMC members dissented from the recent decision and favoured a 25-basis-point rate cut. Meanwhile, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd said that markets continued to swing between two and three US Federal Reserve (Fed) cuts over the past few weeks. "We maintain our base case for two, underpinned by evidence that firms are absorbing tariff costs, a trend that is unsustainable and likely to squeeze margins,' it said in a research note. Moreover, the investment bank said further easing would require either a major deterioration in the next jobs report or a significantly dovish tone from Fed chair Jerome Powell. "Hence, we expect the ringgit to range around RM4.22 to RM4.23 against the greenback in the near term,' it added. On Thursday, the ringgit appreciated to the 4.18 level against the US dollar, its strongest level in more than six weeks. The last time it reached a similar high was on July 1, when it hit 4.1805. Meanwhile, on a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2085/2155 versus 4.2420/2480 previously. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit appreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8653/8702 from 2.8720/8763 the previous week and rose versus the euro to 4.9185/9267 from 4.9381/9451, but declined against the British pound to 5.7050/7145 from 5.7034/7114 The ringgit also trended firmer against ASEAN currencies. The local note improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.2820/2877 from 3.3014/3064 at the end of last week, inched up versus the Thai baht to 12.9760/13.0032 from 13.1173/1419, gained versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.2/260.8 from 260.3/260.8 and strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.37/7.39 from 7.43/7.44 in the preceding week. - Bernama

Bangladesh Cites Economic, Strategic Potential In ASEAN Bid

By Noor Bakhtiar Ahmad KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Bangladesh is stepping up its bid to be a sectoral dialogue partner of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with Chief Adviser Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus emphasising the country's economic and strategic advantages as key to deepening ties with the bloc. Yunus highlighted that Bangladesh's population of more than 170 million offers ASEAN both a substantial market and an available workforce for regional industries, while its untapped economic potential presents significant opportunities for collaboration and growth. bootstrap slideshow 'There are many unexplored areas of investment which would be easy to pursue with Myanmar. We don't do deep sea fishing, for example. We have a big ocean right outside, but we never exploit that. 'So with Myanmar joining in, it becomes another opportunity to work together in deep sea fishing because we share the ocean together," he told the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) in a special interview held on the sidelines of his official visit here. The interview was led by Bernama's Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj together with Editor of International News Service Voon Miaw Ping, and Assistant Editor of Economic News Service Kisho Kumari Sucedaram. The South Asian nation has sought for a sectoral dialogue partner status with ASEAN, and the pursuit has gained momentum since Yunus assumed leadership of Bangladeshi interim government in Aug last year. The Nobel Prize Laureate who was on an official visit to Malaysia from Aug 11 to 13 said the matter was also discussed during his meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and current ASEAN Chair. "One of the things we have been discussing since his visit on October 4 (last year) was joining ASEAN.
