Qatar sees 3-pct rise in tourist arrivals in 1st half of 2025

The Stara day ago
DOHA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Qatar welcomed more than 2.6 million international visitors between January and June, representing a 3-percent increase in visitor numbers in the first half of 2025, compared with the same period in 2024, according to a statement issued on Monday by Visit Qatar, the marketing arm of Qatar Tourism.
Visitors from Gulf Cooperation Council countries accounted for 36 percent of arrivals, followed by visitors from Europe at 26 percent, Asia and Oceania at 22 percent, and 7 percent each from the Americas and other Arab countries.
"We will continue to deepen cooperation at local, regional, and international levels, expand strategic partnerships, and participate in major global forums," the statement quoted Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, chairman of Qatar Tourism, as saying.
Earlier this year, Qatar Tourism announced that the sector contributed 55 billion Qatari riyal (approximately 15.11 billion U.S. dollars) to the country's GDP in 2024, accounting for an estimated 8 percent of the total economy, a 14-percent increase from the previous year.

Tariff truce extended by 90 days

At odds: A trade deal may lead to a summit later this year between Trump and Xi. — AP/AFP US President Donald Trump ordered a delay in the reimposition of higher tariffs on Chinese goods, hours before a trade truce between Washington and Beijing was due to expire. The White House's halt on steeper tariffs will be in place until Nov 10. 'I have just signed an Executive Order that will extend the Tariff Suspension on China for another 90 days,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. While the United States and China slapped escalating tariffs on each other's products this year, bringing them to prohibitive triple-digit levels and snarling trade, both countries in May agreed to temporarily lower them. Their 90-day halt of steeper levies had been due to expire yesterday. Around the same time that Trump confirmed the new extension, Chinese state media Xinhua news agency published a joint statement from US-China talks in Stockholm saying it would also extend its side of the truce. China will continue suspending its earlier tariff hike for 90 days starting yesterday while retaining a 10% duty, the report said. It would also 'take or maintain necessary measures to suspend or remove non-tariff countermeasures against the United States, as agreed in the Geneva joint declaration,' Xinhua reported. In the executive order posted yesterday to its website, the White House reiterated its position that there are 'large and persistent annual US goods trade deficits' and they 'constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and economy of the United States'. The order acknowledged Washington's ongoing discussions with Beijing 'to address the lack of trade reciprocity in our economic relationship' and noted that China has continued to 'take significant steps toward remedying' the US complaints. The 90-day extension means the truce is now set to expire just after midnight on Nov 10. US-China Business Council president Sean Stein said the current extension is 'critical to give the two governments time to negotiate an agreement' providing much-needed certainty for companies to make plans. A trade deal, in turn, would 'pave the way for a Trump-Xi summit this fall,' said Asia Society Policy Institute senior vice-president Wendy Cutler. But Cutler, herself a former US trade official, said: 'This will be far from a walk in the park.' — AFP

Model ‘self-reliance' for Global South, says Xi

(FILES)(COMBO) This combination of pictures created on August 11, 2025 shows Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (L) during a press conference at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia on June 3, 2025, and Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) as he leaves Red Square after the Victory Day military parade in central Moscow on May 9, 2025. China's President Xi Jinping told his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that the two countries could set an example of "self-reliance" in a phone call on August 12, 2025, state media reported. (Photo by EVARISTO SA and Kirill KUDRYAVTSEV / various sources / AFP) China's President Xi Jinping told his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (pic) that the two countries could set an example of 'self-reliance' in a phone call yesterday, state media reported. The two leaders have both sought in recent months to present their countries as staunch defenders of the multilateral trading system – in stark contrast with US President Donald Trump's tariff onslaught. Xi said China would 'work with Brazil to set an example of unity and self-reliance among major countries in the Global South' and 'jointly build a more just world and more sustainable planet', according to state news agency Xinhua. He also said that 'all countries should unite and firmly oppose unilateralism and protectionism', Xinhua reported – a thinly veiled reference to US tariffs. A statement by the Brazilian presidency said that the phone call lasted about an hour, during which time Lula and Xi discussed a range of topics including the war in Ukraine and combatting climate change. 'Both agreed on the role of the G20 and BRICS in defending multilateralism,' the statement said. The leaders also 'committed to expanding the scope of cooperation in sectors such as health, oil and gas, digital economy and satellites', it added. — AFP

China-built photovoltaic power station completed in Romania

BUCHAREST, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A 31.82-megawatt photovoltaic power station built by China's Pinggao Group International Engineering Co., Ltd. was completed Tuesday in Stefan cel Mare, Calarasi County, in southeastern Romania. The project, a subsidiary venture of China Electric Equipment Group Co., Ltd., took about 10 months to build and is expected to operate for 25 years. It will generate 42 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20,000 tonnes. At the completion ceremony, Song Xianmao, counselor in charge of business affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Romania, highlighted the role of green energy in tackling climate change and boosting economic growth. He said China and Romania had deepened cooperation in recent years, with Chinese firms contributing to the country's low-carbon transition. Nicolae Pandea, mayor of Stefan cel Mare commune, said that although Bucharest and Beijing are 7,100 km apart, the distance had not hindered successful collaboration. He welcomed further Chinese investment and promised swift approvals for major projects. Zhu Jibin, general manager of Pinggao Group International Engineering Co., Ltd., hailed the plant as "a significant milestone" in green energy collaboration between China, Italy and Romania. The project, he said, followed principles of safety, efficiency, greenness and innovation, and was completed on time and to high standards. Local site manager Alexandru Gheorghe called the plant "the future" for the commune, adding that residents were proud to see the park finished. Calarasi County deputy prefect Valentin-Dumitru Deculescu praised the initiative as vital for both the community and Romania's renewable energy output.
