Woman arrested after stabbing at San Rafael supportive housing facility, standoff with officers

A woman was arrested after a stabbing attack at a housing facility in San Rafael and a subsequent standoff with officers, police said Wednesday. The San Rafael Police Department said officers arrested 30-year-old Antoinae Tajzahnique Austin for the alleged stabbing Tuesday at Casa Canal, a former office building converted into a supportive housing for people who were formerly homeless. In a press release, police said dispatchers received an emergency call from the facility located at the corner of Kerner Boulevard and Bellam Boulevard, south of Canal Street, just before 5:30 p.m. The report indicated a woman who was a resident at the facility had stabbed another resident in the stomach. When officers arrived, they were told that the suspect, identified as Austin, had fled. The victim was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. Officers learned that Austin had gotten into an argument with the victim before suddenly pulling a knife and stabbing the victim, police said. During the search for Austin, police received another emergency call at 6:50 p.m. about a woman with a knife who approached and threatened another person on San Pablo Avenue south of N. San Pedro Road. The victim was not hurt, and police said the description of the suspect matched that of Austin. As officers responded to that incident, it was reported that Austin had fled into the nearby open space, prompting a coordinated search effort with the Marin County Sheriff's drone unit and the California Highway Patrol's helicopter unit. In addition, a shelter-in-place notification was issued for the neighborhoods along San Pablo Avenue. During the expanded search, police were notified at 7:50 p.m. that Austin had returned to the Casa Canal facility. Officers found her barricaded in a bathroom and refused demands to come out, police said. A crisis negotiation team responded and worked for about 40 minutes to get Austin to surrender peacefully without success, police said. Officers forced entry into the bathroom and took Austin into custody without further incident, according to police. Austin was booked into the Marin County Jail for felony assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a knife, and resisting/obstructing a peace officer. Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call the department at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at

Police commissioner speaks to Shirley business owners as she vows to tackle crime

The Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) met with business owners in Shirley this afternoon as she vowed to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area. It comes after business owners have been subjected to five months of vandalism and verbal abuse from a group of teenagers, which in some cases has seen them be on the receiving end of racist remarks. Speaking to the Echo in Shirley Precinct after meeting with the affected business owners and members of the council, PCC Donna Jones outlined plans to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area, which included private security guards patrolling the high street, the implementation of CCTV cameras in the precinct, and increased police patrols in the region. PCC Donna Jones said: 'I've got a clear message for the young people who are involved in this criminality, it stops now. 'What these businesses have been through over the last five months is completely unacceptable, they are closing their businesses during the day, they're putting the shutters down, we have a gang of young people causing chaos and havoc, committing racially aggravated assaults, enough is enough. 'I'm going to be funding extra CCTV to go around the high street, I'll be funding probably two security guards who will be patrolling the high street during the core hours the shops are open, and they'll be a step up in police patrols here. 'We've got a crown prosecutor from the CPS who we hope to bring onboard as a key partner to make sure they understand what is going on here in terms of the levels of harm and organised criminality, and we'll be following up today's meeting in a few weeks to see if things have calmed down.' Business owners in the precinct hailed the plans as a 'positive step forward,' but expressed frustration that the crime they'd experienced in the area hadn't been tackled sooner. Nnenna Okonkwo, owner of Sunnyday International Foods, said: 'Today is a positive step forward. 'We've needed some help for a while and it was good to talk about everything today with the police commissioner, we hope the changes she's mentioned will have a positive impact on the area and end the abuse shop owners have been facing.' Naani Shaik, manager of Subway in Shirley Precinct, added: 'We've experienced mental torture on a daily basis. 'I wish we could have had this meeting weeks ago but today was constructive. 'Today, I've seen more police patrols in the precinct, and I hope that continues tomorrow.' Leader of Southampton City Council and ward councillor for Shirley, Alexander Winning, said crime was 'unacceptable,' and sympathised with the issues businesses have been facing. He said: 'I know there's been a lot of issues in the last five months with anti-social behaviour but it's more than that, businesses have been terrorised. 'It's not okay and needs to stop. Today was appositive meeting, we've got some agreed actions that we'll be taking forward, it was shocking to hear first hand what businesses have gone through, it's not right. 'Shirley is a welcoming place, and it should be welcoming for everyone.'

Murder investigation launched after man shot near petrol station

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was fatally shot near a petrol station. West Yorkshire Police said officers received a report at 9.43pm on Tuesday that a man had been seriously injured after a shot was fired from a vehicle on Doncaster Road near the BP petrol station in Wakefield. The force said it believed the vehicle used in the offence was 'on false plates and was stolen in a burglary in Castleford on August 3'. The victim was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries. Police said he is understood to be a 50-year-old man who was living in the local area. The man's immediate family are aware and are being offered support by specially trained officers. Police said the vehicle involved is believed to be a blue/grey-coloured Toyota RAV4 with a grey trim, displaying cloned plates FV53FXT. The vehicle is described as being 'distinctive due to having bull lights on the roof above the windshield'. Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, of West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major inquiry team, said: 'A man has lost his life, and it is an absolute priority for us to understand the circumstances of what has taken place and identify anyone who has had any involvement in this incident. 'We understand that the vehicle used in this offence was on false plates and was stolen in a burglary in Castleford on 3 August. The vehicle is particularly distinctive because of the bull lights fitted to the vehicle. 'We are interested in speaking to anyone who believes they have seen this RAV4 following this burglary, around the time of this offence and since. The vehicle may now be displaying different plates. 'Motorists who were in the Doncaster Road area last night who have dashcams fitted are also asked to check whether they have captured any footage of this vehicle. 'The driver was driving in the direction of Wakefield before they have turned around near the BP petrol station immediately prior to the shooting and then driven off in the direction they came from. 'We understand the shock and concern that an incident of this nature will cause, particularly given that a firearm has been involved. 'We are dedicating significant resources to this investigation and our neighbourhood policing colleagues are supporting this with an increased presence in the area to provide reassurance to the community.' Anyone who witnessed any part of the incident or who has any information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police's homicide and major inquiry team online or by calling 101 quoting Operation Ploughland. Information, including footage, can be provided through the force's major incident public portal at
