Abang Johari holds discussion with Anwar ahead of Malaysia-Indonesia meeting in Jakarta
KUCHING (July 29): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg kicked off his official working visit in Jakarta, Indonesia today with a private discussion over breakfast with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to a post on Sarawakku, the Premier's official Facebook page, the closed-door discussion, held at the Prime Minister's place of residence in the Indonesian capital, was in preparation for the yearly consultative meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
Also present was Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Mohd Noor.
Various matters of bilateral interest and importance with Indonesia including border issues and Asean cooperation on renewable power generation and distribution were believed to have been discussed and expected to be brought up for discussion with the Indonesian authorities.
Later, the Malaysian delegation proceeded to the Istana Merdeka where Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to host the visiting delegation.

The Sarawak Premier's office had operated from Wisma Bapa Malaysia since its establishment in 1976, before moving to this new complex that is more modern, strategic and with a distinct identity. The opening ceremony was also witnessed by deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; state Cabinet ministers and and heads of departments. Anwar: Thailand, Cambodia want Malaysia to stay in peace talks role even after Asean chair ends
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Thailand and Cambodia have asked Malaysia to keep mediating their ongoing border conflict, even after Malaysia's term as Asean chair ends next year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told the Dewan Rakyat today. He said Putrajaya would continue acting as a mediator until the dispute is fully resolved. 'This responsibility is not limited to our position as Asean Chair. Both countries have requested that Malaysia continue its role until a resolution is achieved,' Anwar said. 'Initially, we targeted a resolution within three months. However, in any negotiation, timelines cannot be strictly fixed. What's important is ensuring progress is made through ceasefires and a genuine commitment towards resolution,' he added. Anwar also stressed the importance of maintaining Asean centrality in managing regional disputes, warning against the direct involvement of major powers. He said any future monitoring or peacekeeping presence at the border should comprise representatives from Asean member states only. 'We want to avoid the direct involvement of major powers. These negotiations must remain an Asean initiative,' he said. He added that external logistical support from countries such as the United States or China may be accepted — but only if offered neutrally and without political interference. Anwar also urged all parties to refrain from provocations that could derail the ongoing peace efforts.

Malaysia to extend border peacekeeping role beyond Asean chair term
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue to host peace-monitoring efforts along the tense Thailand-Cambodia border under the General Border Committee (GBC), even after its term as Asean chair ends next year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. He said the mandate entrusted to Malaysia to coordinate the border issue is not tied to its Asean chairmanship and will remain in place until the situation stabilises — ideally within three months. "I was asked to continue the role until the issue is resolved. It's not bound by Asean or a fixed timeline, but we are targeting a resolution within three months. "But in any negotiation, we cannot set a rigid deadline," he said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat. Anwar emphasised that any conflict involving Asean member states must be resolved internally, without intervention from major powers such as the United States or China. However, he said logistical assistance from these countries would be welcomed, provided peacekeeping efforts remain under Asean oversight. "In any negotiation process, there must be a ceasefire. This way, we can avoid intervention from major powers. "If there is a need for a peacekeeping presence, it should only involve Asean military attachés. Logistical support from countries like the United States or China is welcome — but not troops," he said.
