Ziegenbalg memorial yet to materialise despite announcement in State Assembly
Over a year after the Tamil Nadu government announced in the Legislative Assembly the construction of a memorial hall and statue for Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg, the German missionary and Tamil scholar, works have not been picked up yet.
Ziegenbalg, who arrived in Tharangambadi on July 9, 1706, after a 222-day sea voyage, is credited with establishing the first Tamil printing press in India in 1712. He also founded Asia's first Protestant church, the New Jerusalem Church, and published Tamil grammars and dictionaries by transferring palm leaf manuscripts to paper. Widely acknowledged as a social reformer, he fought for education rights of women and marginalised communities, and set up schools, vocational training centres, and printing facilities.
In the 2024 budget session, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin announced plans to build a memorial hall with a statue to honour Ziegenbalg's contributions and to be implemented by the Tamil Development and Information Department. The move followed years of demand by political parties and scholars.
'Officials have identified land outside Tharangambadi, in Poraiyar, which makes no sense. The memorial must be built inside the Danish Fort area where Ziegenbalg lived and worked,' said S. Johnson, a social activist.
Officials from the Tamil Development Department confirmed that land near Tharangambadi police station, adjacent to the tahsildar office, had been earmarked for the purpose. A Government Order sanctioning funds was expected shortly, and construction was likely to begin within a month.

Time is running out to be released and be able to sleep in my bed with my family." He is then seen breaking down. The footage is juxtaposed with images of starving Palestinian children. In addition to the footage of David, Hamas and Islamic Jihad released another video showing hostage Rom Braslavski, 21, a dual German-Israeli citizen, also appearing weak. How has David's family reacted? David's family, according to the New York Post, said in a statement sent to the Hostages Families Forum Headquarters, 'We are forced to witness our beloved son and brother, Evyatar David, deliberately and cynically starved in Hamas's tunnels in Gaza — a living skeleton, buried alive." Of the 251 hostages taken during the Hamas attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27, the Israeli military says, are dead. Adding 6.5 lakh Bihar migrants as voters in TN is illegal, says PC
Chennai, Aug 3 (UNI) Joining the rising chorus against the Election Commission's move to grant voting rights to migrant workers from Bihar, facing disenfranchisement in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in that poll-bound state, Congress veteran P Chidambaram today termed it as alarming and patently illegal. The senior Congress leader also made it clear that the move, besides being gross interference in the rights of the electorate of Tamil Nadu to elect a government of their choice, it was an "insult" to the migrant workers. 'While 65 lakh voters are in danger of being disenfranchised in Bihar, reports of 'adding' 6.5 lakh persons as voters in Tamil Nadu is alarming and patently illegal. Calling them 'permanently migrated' is an insult to the migrant workers and gross interference in the right of the electorate of Tamil Nadu to elect a government of their choice,' he wrote in a post on X. Questioning why the migrant workers cannot return to their home state to cast their votes during elections, he pointed out that they were going back every year for performing the Chhath Puja. 'Why should the migrant workers not return to Bihar (or his/her home state) to vote in the assembly election, as they usually do? Does not the migrant worker return to Bihar at the time of Chhath Puja festival? The migrant worker has such a home in Bihar (or another state). How can he/she be enrolled as a voter in Tamil Nadu?' he asked, adding 'the SIR exercise is getting curiouser and curiouser. If the migrant worker's family has a permanent home in Bihar and lives in Bihar, how can the migrant worker be considered 'permanently migrated' to Tamil Nadu?' The EC, he charged, was abusing the powers entrusted to it. 'The ECI is abusing its powers and trying to change the electoral character and patterns of states. This abuse of powers must be fought politically and legally,' read the post, which also tagged the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Won't allow importing of voters: DMK
CHENNAI/VELLORE/PUDUKKOTTAI: Leaders of a few political parties have reacted preemptively and strongly to queries from the media, television channels in particulars, about rumours that around seven lakh migrant workers from Bihar in Tamil Nadu could get added to the state's electoral roll. However, sources from the Chief Electoral Officer and Labour Department that maintains data on migrant workers said neither the numbers nor the rumours about inclusion en masse had any official basis. To a question on this from media in Pudukkottai on Saturday, former law minister S Regupathy said 'importing of voters' from other states will not be acceptable and the DMK will raise the issue appropriately with the Election Commission of India if such a situation arises. Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan also responded on similar lines to a question from the media in Vellore on Saturday. Alleging that manipulations were being done in Bihar in the electoral rolls by the BJP, he said such moves in other states should be carefully opposed. 'We will become roaring lions to oppose it,' he said, if such attempts were made in Tamil Nadu. VCK president and Chidambaram MP Thol Thirumavalavan also said his party would strongly oppose any such moves. NTK chief coordinator Seeman, in a post on X, said that the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, if done in Tamil Nadu, could result in migrant workers from north Indian states exerting a huge influence on TN politics, thereby eroding the power of Tamil people.
