Strictly Come Dancing will return soon for its new series and we already know that at least one of the contestants has experience competing on the dancefloor of the BBC show
The line-up for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing is now starting to be unveiled ahead of the launch. The first contestant was named this morning by the BBC amid much speculation over who will take to the dancefloor this year.

Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who's also known as Nitro, is the first celebrity confirmed for the next series of Strictly, which is expected to launch in the coming weeks. His dance partner has yet to be announced though.

It isn't the first time that the former Olympic athlete has competed on the dancefloor though, with him having appeared in last year's Christmas special, so we've taken a look at the show's history of bringing back contestants. It comes amid reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025.

Harry was on Strictly's Christmas special in December last year. Partnered with Nancy Xu, he got one of the highest scores in the episode but lost to RuPaul's Drag Race UK star Tayce, who had danced with Kai Widdrington.
There's also speculation that Girls Aloud 's Nicola Roberts, who appeared on a festival special back in 2022, could be on the main series this year too. She's reportedly set to share some "news" on BBC Radio 2 tomorrow morning.
So what are the rules on past contestants returning? Strictly has allowed a number of celebrities who have appeared in specials to later compete on the main, with there seemingly no restrictions on previous contestants coming back.
Several celebrities who competed in Christmas specials have gone on to appear on the main show, including some who even won the festive spin-off. They include EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick won the special in 2023 with Nancy.
Last year, Jamie appeared on the main show but partnered with Michelle Tsiakkas. Although some pros have left by the time their former celebrity partner has returned, Nancy was still on the show when Jamie came back, with returning stars not guaranteed to be in the same partnership.

JLS member JB Gill won a Christmas special in 2012 alongside dance partner Ola Jordan. He returned last year but was partnered with Amy Dowden and then Lauren Oakley. Ola had left the show years before his second stint.
JB had competed against the likes of Helen Skelton during his first appearance. She later returned herself, with her back on the dancefloor as a contestant on the main show in 2022, a decade on from her debut on the spin-off.

They aren't the only Christmas special stars to have later been on the main show. Former This Morning host Fern Britton competed in 2010 and then 2012, Blue member Simon Webbe appeared in 2011 and then 2014, whilst Bros' Matt Goss was a contestant in 2013 and then 2022.
Although none of the contestants who returned after competing in a Christmas special have ever won the main show, some have reached the final. JB, Helen and Simon all became runners-up when they returned to the dancefloor.
It isn't just the annual Christmas special has that opened the door for future contestants on the main show. Some celebrities have competed on other Strictly specials in the past before ending up in the line-up for the main show.

Alex Scott, for example, won a footballers special for Sport Relief in 2018 and returned for the main series in 2019. Susanna Reid was in a Children in Need newsreaders special in 2011 and later on the main show in 2013. Whilst Maisie Smith won an EastEnders special in 2019 and then placed as a runner-up on the main series of Strictly in 2020.
McFly's Harry Judd and the Saturdays' Rochelle Humes competed against each other in a Children In Need special in 2010, which was won by the former. He later returned for the main show in 2011, which he won, whilst Rochelle made a second appearance herself in a Christmas special in 2013.

Contestants have also been known to appear on the main show and then return for one of the spin-offs. EastEnders star Louisa Lytton competed on Strictly back in 2006 and then appeared in a Children In Need special in 2019.
There has even been specials dedicated to returning contestants over the years. A Christmas special in 2016, for example, saw six contestants who had once competed on the main show, including runner-up Frankie Bridge and Gethin Jones, with Melvin Odoom crowned the winner.
Additionally, reality TV star Jamie Laing had been unveiled as part of the line-up for Strictly in 2019 but later withdrew due to an injury before his first performance. He then got to return as a contestant on the show the following year.
Announcing his return for the new series, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey said: "After the Christmas Special, it was so nice I just had to do it twice! I'm so excited to be part of the Strictly family this series and I'm ready to give it all I've got. I'll be bringing tons of energy to light up the dance floor. Let's hope I'm as quick picking up the routines as I am on the track."

Strictly fans fiercely defend BBC show as they make desperate plea over axe fears

BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing has hit the headlines over the last few weeks after being caught up in a number of scandals, however hardcore fans are fighting for it Strictly Come Dancing fans have furiously defended the BBC show amid calls for it to be axed. The series has been wrapped up in a number of scandals ahead of its latest series, with the BBC reportedly calling in police to investigate claims of cocaine use among the cast. ‌ Bosses are said to have contacted the Metropolitan Police after launching an inquiry into claims that two of its stars had used cocaine. "It's a significant new development in the BBC 's recent string of crises that they have now got the police involved in investigating allegations surrounding Strictly," a source said. ‌ It comes after the series also faced backlash over its 2025 line-up, with some criticising the level of celebrities who've been confirmed for the show, branding it "underwhelming". ‌ However, many fans are fiercely defending the show after some have called for Strictly to be axed after 21 years on our screens. After Channel 5's Jeremy Vine Show debated whether it was time for the show to end, many took to X to advocate for Strictly. "No! I love Strictly and look forward to it. Only good thing about Autumn," one fan wrote. Another said: "Don't be ridiculous it's a great show !!" A third wrote: "No. It's one of the best shows on tv and just because something gets mentioned in a paper. Doesn't make it true." While a fourth said: "You seriously can't blame the show, which is hugely popular for some of the douche bags that manage to get on it. If you go around every tv show or work place, you're going to find wrong uns! Ridiculous hysteria." ‌ Meanwhile on Reddit, some fans were vocal about their support for this year's line-up - which includes Love Island's Dani Dyer, TikTok star George Clarke and ITV's Ross King. "Everyone complaining about this line up, but I'm absolutely buzzing about George Clarke is who I'm most excited about," one fan said. "People complain when they hear social media person who he is a genuinely funny guy I think everyone will grow to love him." Another replied: "I'd literally never heard of Joe Sugg when he was on and he ended up being one of my favourite that year. So I'm open to whoever turns out to be fun to watch."

Gary Lineker sends seven-word message to BBC chief after what he saw on Match of the Day

Gary Lineker has sent a message of praise to the BBC after tuning into the first Match of the Day programme aired since his departure, which Mark Chapman hosted on Saturday evening Gary Lineker was full of praise when asked about the return of Match of the Day. The flagship show returned on Saturday for the first time since Lineker's exit. ‌ Mark Chapman took up hosting duties, but other than that, it was very much a familiar Match of the Day set-up. The trio of Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan were announced by the BBC in January as Lineker's replacements, with the long-time lead presenter ultimately cutting ties with the organisation in light of sparking an antisemitism row. ‌ Alex Kay-Jelski, who was hired as the Beeb's director of sport in April last year, mooted changes to the show after Lineker's departure. However, the 64-year-old was pleased that little had been altered with a new era ushered in, commending his former boss for not fixing something that wasn't broken. ‌ Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast alongside ex-BBC colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, Lineker opened up about how he felt watching the show he hosted for 26 years return to our screens. "Alan, you were doing Match of the Day last night. I must say, I enjoyed it," he admitted. "I went out for dinner, then I came home in time to watch it. "Thought it was really good. Chappers did a great job. There was a lot of talk, wasn't there, that they were going to change things, and you know what it's like, you get a new guy in, new head of sport, thinking he wants to do this and wants to do that. "But, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' I think that was very much the most sensible decision, and I thought the programme was great." Host Chapman was joined by established pundit Shearer and a new addition in Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney on Saturday's first show of the new Premier League season, and Lineker approved of the latter's presence. ‌ "I thought Wayne Rooney did really well, as well as yourself, Alan, so good analysis in there," Lineker stated. "It was so nice watching it, holding a glass of wine!" Having taken over from Des Lynam in 1999, Match of the Day had long been synonymous with Lineker, but the ex-England striker claimed it wasn't strange now watching on from home. "It wasn't weird, really, no. I was quite relaxed," he continued. "I was thinking, 'I haven't got a three-and-a-half-hour journey at the end of the show.' ‌ "I really enjoyed watching it. It is the first time that I have watched Match of the Day on a Saturday night for I don't know how many years. "The only time I ever missed the show was if I'd take the odd Saturday off to have a holiday, and I'd go somewhere, so it had been so long since I'd watched it." BBC Destination X's fate 'revealed' ahead of debut series finale

The future of BBC series Destination X has reportedly been confirmed. Destination X: Darren gets emotional as he chats about his family Reality programme Destination X is poised to return for a second series, according to reports. ‌ Sources have claimed BBC bosses have greenlit another run following a confidential meeting with producers. ‌ They're planning to reveal the news later this month. ‌ A show insider said: "Everyone at the BBC thinks Destination X is a cracking show, so they want to bring it back in 2026. "It's a clear sign that they have faith it could become one of the biggest shows on TV," reports the Daily Star. Rob Brydon is set to be offered a lucrative deal to return as presenter, as they believe he is "perfect" for the programme. Production on the second series is expected to begin within months and creators are already exploring potential filming locations. Destination X has emerged as a viewing phenomenon since debuting last month, and episodes have been attracting more than four million viewers. ‌ It has been demolishing ITV reality programme The Fortune Hotel in its Wednesday and Thursday evening slot. The format originally premiered in Belgium in 2023 and proved enormously popular. Subsequently, versions have launched in The Netherlands, Denmark and the US. ‌ The Mirror has approached the BBC for comment. Speaking of the appeal of doing the show, Rob previously revealed: 'I love the thought of the scale of it, because I've never done anything in television with that scale. We go all over Europe to some fantastic places, so the appeal was working on a show of that scale.' ‌ He added that he took some inspiration from The Traitors host Claudia Winkleman, saying: 'I did look to Claudia on The Traitors, I love the lightness of touch there… I didn't want to get in the way of the show, so I was very aware of that. 'I just wanted to be the bridge between the viewer and the contestants, because people say this, but it's true, they are the stars. 'Their personalities really come out over the course of the series and for me, watching that first one, you see the beginnings of relationships and people's characters blossom.' Destination X is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
