Switch to renewable energy hits global tipping point for even lower costs, UN says
Last year, 74% of the growth in electricity generated worldwide was from wind, solar and other green sources, according to the U.N.'s multiagency report, called Seizing the Moment of Opportunity. It found that 92.5% of all new electricity capacity added to the grid worldwide in that time period came from renewables. Meanwhile, sales of electric vehicles are up from 500,000 in 2015 to more than 17 million in 2024.
The three cheapest electricity sources globally last year were onshore wind, solar panels and new hydropower, according to an energy cost report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Solar power now is 41% cheaper and wind power is 53% cheaper globally than the lowest-cost fossil fuel, the reports said. Fossil fuels, which are the chief cause of climate change, include coal, oil and natural gas.
'The fossil fuel age is flailing and failing,' United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in Tuesday morning speech unveiling the reports. 'We are in the dawn of a new energy era. An era where cheap, clean, abundant energy powers a world rich in economic opportunity.'
'Just follow the money,' Guterres said, quoting the reports that showed last year there was $2 trillion in investment in green energy, which is about $800 billion more than in fossil fuels.
Renewable energy touted as force for sovereignty in Canada's north
Opinion: To be an energy superpower, Canada must set aside flawed green ideology
Still, United Nations officials said the switch to renewable energy, while remarkable compared to 10 years ago, is not happening fast enough.
The global renewables growth has been mostly in developed countries such as China – where one-tenth of the economy is tied up in green energy – as well as countries such as India and Brazil.
Yet Africa represented less than 2% of the new green energy capacity installed last year despite having great electrification needs, the reports said. United Nations officials blamed the high cost of capital for the Global South.
'The Global South must be empowered to generate its own electricity without adding to already unsustainable level of debts,' said Bahamian climate scientist Adelle Thomas of the Natural Resources Defense Council. Thomas, who did not work on the reports, added that they debunk the myth that clean energy cannot compete with fossil fuels, instead showing a clean energy future is not just possible but likely inevitable.
The U.N. reports are 'right on the money,' said University of Michigan environment dean Jonathan Overpeck, who also wasn't part of the studies. He said the economic tipping point leads to a cycle that keeps driving renewable costs down and makes fossil fuel power less and less desirable.
And renewables are booming despite fossil fuels getting nearly nine times the government consumption subsidies as they do, Guterres and the reports said. In 2023, global fossil fuel subsidies amounted to $620 billion, compared to $70 billion for renewables, the U.N. report said.
But just as renewables are booming, fossil fuel production globally is still increasing, instead of going down in response. United Nations officials said that's because power demand is increasing overall, spurred by developing countries, artificial intelligence data centres and the need for cooling in an ever warmer world.
'A typical AI data centre eats up as much electricity as 100,000 homes,' Guterres said. 'By 2030 data centres could consume as much electricity as all of Japan does today.'
So Guterres called on the world's major tech firms to power data centres completely with renewables by 2030.
In the United States, solar and wind power had been growing at a rate of 12.3% per year from 2018 to 2023, the IRENA report said. But since President Donald Trump took office earlier this year, his administration has withdrawn the nation from the landmark Paris climate accord and cut many federal renewable energy programs, with a renewed emphasis on fossil fuels.
Guterres warned nations hanging on to fossil fuels that they were heading down a dangerous path that would make them poorer not richer, without naming the United States specifically.
'Countries that cling to fossil fuels are not protecting their economies, they sabotaging them. Driving up costs. Undermining competitiveness. Locking in stranded assets,' Guterres said.
Opinion: Trump's green-bashing is precisely why it's a good time to buy green
Renewables are the smart way to go for energy security, Guterres said. With renewables, he said, 'there are no price spikes for sunlight. No embargoes on wind.'
David Waskow of the World Resources Institute said the message of problems mixed with optimism makes sense. He compared Tuesday's assessment to climbing a mountain and taking time halfway through to look down and appreciate how far you've come. But a look up shows the trek is getting steeper.
Guterres said he understands how young people could have a sense of 'doom and gloom,' and regrets what his generation has left them – but all is not lost.
'This is not inevitable. We have the tools, the instruments, the capacity to change course,' Guterres said. 'There are reasons to be hopeful.'

IBM Surpasses Q2 Earnings Estimates on Solid Demand Trends
International Business Machines Corporation IBM reported strong second-quarter 2025 results, with adjusted earnings and revenues beating the respective Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company witnessed healthy demand trends for hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions with a client-focused portfolio and broad-based growth. IBM exceeded the target metrics related to revenue, profitability and cash flow growth for the quarter. Despite economic uncertainty stemming from geopolitical issues, supply chain vulnerabilities, constrained federal spending and the evolving landscape of interest rates and inflation levels, the company expects to deliver sustainable growth through advanced technology and deep consulting expertise. Net Income On a GAAP basis, net income for the reported quarter was $2.19 billion or $2.31 per share compared with $1.83 billion or $1.96 per share in the year-ago quarter. The significant improvement in GAAP earnings was primarily led by top-line growth. Excluding non-recurring items, non-GAAP net income from continuing operations was $2.80 per share compared with $2.43 in the prior-year quarter. The bottom line beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 16 cents. Quarter Details Quarterly total revenues increased to $16.98 billion from $15.77 billion on strong demand for hybrid cloud and AI, driving growth in the Software segment. On a constant currency basis, revenues were up 5% year over year. The top line exceeded the consensus estimate of $16.58 billion. Gross profit improved to $9.98 billion from $8.95 billion in the prior-year quarter, resulting in respective gross margins of 58.8% and 56.8% owing to a strong portfolio mix. Total expenses increased to $7.38 billion from $6.73 billion due to higher selling, general and administrative expenses and research and development costs. Segmental Performance Software: Revenues improved to $7.39 billion from $6.74 billion, driven by growth in Hybrid Cloud (Red Hat, up 16%), Automation (16%), Data (9%) and Transaction Processing (1%). The segment's revenues missed our estimate of $7.52 billion despite solid hybrid cloud traction. Segment profit was $2.3 billion compared with $2.1 billion in the year-ago quarter for margins of 31.1% and 31.3%, respectively. The company is witnessing healthy hybrid cloud adoption by clients and solid demand trends across automation and generative AI offerings like watsonx. Consulting: Revenues were $5.31 billion compared with $5.18 billion a year ago as clients prioritized spending and pulled back on discretionary projects. The segment's revenues beat our estimate of $5.17 billion. Segment profit improved to $562 million from $463 million for margins of 10.6% and 8.9%, respectively. Infrastructure: Revenues were $4.14 billion compared with $3.64 billion on higher demand for hybrid and distributed infrastructure. Segment profit was $965 million compared with $654 million in the year-ago quarter, for respective margins of 23.3% and 17.9%. This reflected strength in the z17 program as AI use cases resonated strongly with clients. Higher investments in the business across areas like AI, hybrid cloud and quantum also buoyed segment performance. Financing: Revenues declined to $166 million from $169 million a year ago. Segment profit was up to $179 million from $77 million in the year-ago quarter for respective margins of 107.9% and 45.3%. Cash Flow & Liquidity During the quarter, IBM generated $1.7 billion in cash from operations compared with $2.07 billion in the year-ago quarter, bringing the respective tallies for the first six months of 2025 and 2024 to $6.07 billion and $6.23 billion. Free cash flow was $2.84 billion in the quarter, up from $2.61 billion in the prior-year period, driven by higher profit and working capital efficiencies. As of June 30, 2025, the company had $11.94 billion in cash and cash equivalents with $55.22 billion of long-term debt. Outlook For 2025, the company expects revenues to grow at least 5% on a constant currency basis, driven by a strong portfolio mix, operating leverage and yield from productivity initiatives. Free cash flow is expected to be in the vicinity of $13.5 billion. Zacks Rank IBM currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Hologic's International Momentum Takes Shape: Will Execution Pay Off?
International expansion continues to play a central role in Hologic 's HOLX growth strategy. Currently, it generates around 25% of its total revenues from outside the United States — a lower proportion compared to other medical technology companies. Over the past decade, the company has made targeted investments toward international expansion and commercial capabilities, which have delivered more than 10% international growth annually. Even so, the underpenetration presents significant room for expansion. While many of Hologic's product successes began in the United States, it has now built the capabilities to scale internationally on a consistent basis. In its Surgical division, the company continues to invest organically, especially in the International business, where it has delivered more than 20% growth for several years. The momentum is supported by increased reimbursement and the promotion of guidelines for its portfolio of product offerings. In the fiscal second quarter of 2025, the International Surgical business rose 16.2% year over year. MyoSure is seeing even faster gains abroad, fueled by vastly untapped markets and higher demand for minimally invasive options to treat uterine polyps and fibroids. Newly acquired Gynesonics gave a boost, having already generated a healthy mix of international sales before joining Hologic. Now with the support of Hologic's large Gyn sales force, Gynesonics' sales are expected to grow at a strong double-digit rate. NovaSure is also seeing higher sales volume in Europe despite posting domestic declines. That said, global exposure brings added operational challenges. The company's second-quarter international sales were hurt by the ongoing physician strike in South Korea, reduced hospital spending in China and lower HIV testing sales in Africa due to USAID funding cuts. In China, Hologic's cytology business is now weighed down by tariff implications, anti-American sentiment and intensifying local competition. International Performance of Hologic's Top Rivals Becton, Dickinson and Company BDX, or BD, derives a significant portion of its revenues from overseas, with products being distributed either directly or through independent distribution channels and sales representatives. In the second quarter of 2025, BD's international revenues increased 1.2%, driven by gains in the Medical segment's Pharmaceutical Systems unit and the acquired Advanced Patient Monitoring unit's sales. Based on tariffs in effect as of April 30, 2025, BD anticipates a $90 million hit to fiscal year 2025 operating expenses. Abbott ABT, too, maintains a strong global footprint, with sales outside the United States accounting for approximately 61% of its 2024 net sales. In the second quarter of 2025, international sales increased 6.6% year over year. Abbott remains the global leader in adult nutrition, supported by continued demand for its Ensure and Glucerna brands. ABT's Electrophysiology division also drove strong performance across 15 key markets — including India, China, and other markets across Asia, Latin America and the Middle East — representing some of the most attractive growth areas for branded generic medicines. HOLX Stock Performance, Valuation and Estimates Year to date, Hologic shares have declined 8.5% compared with the industry's 10.2% fall.
