My Bihar yatra is to save democracy, says Rahul
Patna: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday announced that the party will launch a direct campaign against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls from Bihar on Aug 17 with the commencement of the "Voter Adhikar Yatra". "This is not just an election issue but a decisive battle to protect democracy, the Constitution and the principle of 'one man, one vote'," Rahul declared in a social media post. Asserting the party's commitment to ensuring a "clean voter list" nationwide, he appealed to youths, workers, farmers and all citizens to join what he described as a "people's movement". "This time, the defeat of vote thieves is certain," he said. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and other Grand Alliance leaders would join Rahul on the yatra, which will pass through several districts before culminating in a mega rally at Gandhi Maidan, Patna, on Sept 1. "The rally will send a clear message to drive away the vote thieves," Venugopal said, vowing to keep power in the hands of ordinary people rather than "divisive forces, cronies and the powerful". RJD MP Sudhakar writes to guv against college allocation system
Buxar: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP from Buxar, Sudhakar Singh, has raised concerns over the recently implemented online enrolment and college allocation system for higher education. In a letter addressed to governor on Thursday, Singh wrote the new system randomly allots colleges — resembling a lottery mechanism — resulting in students being placed in institutions located 50 to 70 kilometers away from their homes, imposing a significant financial and logistical burden. Singh pointed out that colleges in rural and semi-urban areas were originally established to provide accessible and affordable education to local students. The MP also warned that the new process is having a cascading effect on academic quality. "Classrooms are empty, students are appearing in exams without attending classes, and teachers are compelled to pass students without teaching them," he stated. He urged the governor to conduct a high-level review of the system and ensure that college allocations prioritize proximity to students' residences. Expressing hope, Singh said the governor's timely and fair intervention can safeguard the future of lakhs of students. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
