Surat targets 50% electric vehicles share on roads by 2030
Replacing the earlier Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2021, the new framework focuses on the adoption of different alternate fuels like hydrogen-powered vehicles, biofuel-based vehicles, along with EVs. The policy will be implemented for a period of five years.
To support the growing number of EV vehicles, over 460 charging stations will be established across the city, ensuring that there is at least one station per sq km, incentivising e-vehicle purchase through subsidies and creating necessary infrastructure.
Direct incentives in the form of subsidies will be provided to commercial electric three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and pink e-autos for women entrepreneurs. Subsidies will vary by vehicle type and segment, making adoption economically viable. Incentives also include exemption from vehicle tax.
SMC will create a green vehicle cell, which will coordinate the implementation of the policy through a structured governance framework, including a technical committee and monitoring teams.

A dedicated Green Vehicle Fund will also be formed, pooling resources from municipal funding, green bonds, CSR contributions, carbon financing, and govt grants. The cell will include officials from SMC, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), electricity distribution companies, traffic police, the members of The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and experts.
"The GVP25 aligns with India's net-zero carbon goals and serves as a roadmap to make Surat a climate-resilient and environmentally-friendly urban centre.
Through a combination of technological adoption, public-private collaboration, and citizen engagement, we aim to lead the green mobility revolution in the state," said Rajan Patel, chairman, Standing Committee.
Additionally, the policy envisions the creation of green zones and mobility corridors to improve air quality and promote non-polluting transportation options. The development of GV manufacturing and assembling units locally will be promoted.
The policy has a scope of projects for battery recycling. Future expansion plans include hydrogen and biofuel technologies through a structured roadmap focused on technology adaptation, infrastructure growth, and demand creation.
To enable a seamless experience for EV users, a network of 460 public charging stations will be deployed using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Digital platforms, including a One EV App and a web portal, will streamline services and bring transparency to stakeholders.
The city will also host a GV Expo on Sept 8, showcasing innovations in GV technology and charging infrastructure. Special focus will be placed on training for safety protocols and emergency response SOPs.

Govt aims 50% rise in milk procurement with White Revolution 2.0: Amit Shah
The government is working to increase milk procurement by 50 per cent over the next five years under the cooperative-led White Revolution 2.0, Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday. Chairing the second meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee, Shah outlined the government's ambitious plans for the cooperative sector, including the target of setting up 2 lakh multipurpose cooperative societies. So far, 35,395 new cooperative societies have been formed under this initiative. "The Ministry of Cooperation is committed to transforming cooperatives into vibrant and successful business units," Shah said, emphasising that the cooperative sector could pave the way to prosperity for landless and poor people. Under the White Revolution 2.0, significant progress has been made in strengthening the dairy sector. As many as 15,691 new Dairy Cooperative Societies have been registered while 11,871 existing ones have been strengthened, he said. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and 25 Milk Unions across 15 states have signed MoUs to establish biogas plants in dairy cooperatives, according to a statement. The minister highlighted three national-level cooperative societies established for the sector's development. The National Cooperative Organic Limited (NCOL) handles certification, branding, packaging and marketing of farmers' organic products to ensure better prices. The National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL) provides facilities for exporting farmers' products internationally, with full profits going to farmers. The Bharatiya Beej Sahkari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) focuses on conservation, storage and production of India's traditional seeds. Shah announced that the Modi government will enter into contracts with small farmers for traditional seeds to ensure they benefit from these initiatives. The ministry has undertaken over 100 initiatives in the past four years to strengthen Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), dairy, fisheries, cooperative banks, sugar cooperatives and governance systems. These include digital reforms, policy changes, financial support and institutional capacity building. The National Cooperative Policy-2025 provides a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable cooperative development, coordinating with government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and National Dairy Development Program (NPDD) to strengthen the cooperative ecosystem at the grassroots level. During the meeting, the Ministry of Cooperation made a presentation to the committee on various initiatives taken in the last four years. The ministry informed that institutional mechanisms including Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), National Level Coordination Committee (NLCC), State Cooperative Development Committees (SCDC), and District Cooperative Development Committees (DCDC) have been established for effective implementation and monitoring. A significant development is the establishment of Tribhuvan Sahkari University through a Parliamentary Act, declared an institution of national importance. The university will integrate and standardise cooperative education and training in India while providing skilled human resources for the sector. Shah urged committee members to strengthen the dairy sector in their respective states to boost cooperatives. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to empower cooperatives as engines of growth, equality and self-reliance in rural India.

US tariff hike threatens Kerala's export economy, says state finance minister
Thiruvananthapuram: Finance minister K N Balagopal warned that the 25% tariff imposed by the United States on Indian products could seriously hurt Kerala's economy. The higher tariff would badly impact exports of key products like marine foods, spices, and tea, he said. Balagopal said the US-led trade war with countries worldwide would cause a major crisis in global trade and economy, hitting India hard. He made these remarks while inaugurating a seminar on 'Post-Covid Development Challenges and Response: Through the lens of Kerala budgets,' organized by Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation. He added that developed countries like the US and Australia are pressuring the Union govt to open up the markets for agricultural products, milk and milk-based products. Reports suggest that Australia can sell milk in India at a much cheaper rate (Rs 30/litre). If cheaper milk floods Kerala's market, local milk producers could face serious difficulties. He criticized the campaign that Kerala is in a debt trap and its total debt has mounted to Rs 6 trillion. "This is absolutely baseless and a section of experts had been spreading false information about the debt status of Kerala through social media platforms," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo He clarified that Kerala's total debt at the end of FY 2025-26 would be around Rs 4,70,000 crore. Economist M A Oommen added that Kerala's fiscal condition has worsened due to repeated natural disasters and the Covid pandemic, which have severely impacted the state's finances.
