Tripura: Nine BJP functionaries injured in attack by Tipra Motha Party workers
A police officer said that around 30 BJP functionaries, members and supporters were assembled at a house at Taksapara village under Asharambari Assembly Constituency to listen to the Prime Minister's monthly Mann Ki Baat Programme.
'When the Mann Ki Baat Programme was going on, a large number of TMP workers attacked the gathering injuring nine BJP functionaries with two of them seriously. Local people took the injured to the Khowai district hospital,' the official said.
The TMP attackers also damaged eight bikes and two cars belonging to the BJP functionaries. A huge contingent of security forces led by senior police officials deployed in the tension ridden areas.
BJP Mandal President Jayanta Debbarma said that when the 'Mann Ki Baat' programme was underway around 100 unruly youths of the TMP attacked the party gathering.
'The attackers vandalised my vehicle too and also attacked the owner of the house where the Mann-Ki-Baat programme was organised. They also vandalised many bikes and several other vehicles,' Jayanta Debbarma told the media.
BJP leaders Papiya Datta, Pinaki Das Chowdhury and Bipin Debbarma separately condemned the incident and demanded severe action against the attackers.
Bipin Debbarma, state BJP's General Secretary, said that a delegation of BJP leaders from Agartala rushed to Khowai district.
'Chief Minister Manik Saha and state BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee talked with the TMP leaders and discussed the unexpected incident,' Bipin Debabrma told the media.
Asharambari Assembly Constituency is represented by senior TMP leader and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma.
According to Bipin Debbarma, the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, spoke with Minister Animesh Debbarma over the incident.
The attackers used lathi, 'dao' (a sharp-edged weapon) and other locally made sticks to attack the BJP functionaries and members, Bipin Debbarma said, and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his thoughts with the people of the country and abroad in the Mann Ki Baat programme on Akashvani on Sunday, and it was the 124th episode of the monthly radio programme on Sunday.
The Tripura Chief Minister, his cabinet colleagues, many other leaders and thousands of workers and party members from across the state like previous episodes also listen to the programme on Sunday.

India is the world's fastest-growing major economy and is rapidly moving towards becoming a global leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Bengaluru on Saturday, days after US President Donald Trump described the country's economy as 'dead' amid escalating trade tensions between the two nations. 'India is currently the fastest-growing major economy in the world. In the past eleven years, India's economy has risen from the 10th position to the top five globally and is rapidly progressing towards becoming one of the top three economies,' he said. The PM's endorsement of the country's economic growth came after Trump, on July 30, announced 25% punitive tariffs on Indian goods entering America for purchasing Russian oil. A day later he again targeted India, saying, 'I don't care what India does with Russia… They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.' On August 6, he signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods. India has called the American actions 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable' and said it will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests. In his address, Modi also called for the country to accelerate its self-reliance in the technology sector as he pressed for a stronger 'Tech Atmanirbhar Bharat'. 'Indian tech companies have made their mark on the global stage. They have built software and products for the world. The time has come to give greater priority to the needs of India. We must move forward in manufacturing new products,' he said. The statement was in line with his August 2 remarks in which he called on citizens to adopt the spirit of 'swadeshi' and support locally made products, stressing that true service to the nation lies in promoting indigenous goods amid global economic uncertainties. The additional 25% tariffs, due to take effect on August 27, will put Indian exporters at a significant disadvantage compared to their rivals in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam – which face tariffs of between 19% and 20%. In his speech, Modi said that the country's rapid pace of development was linked to its economic growth as he focused on the rise of the country's exports. 'Before 2014, India's total export was $468 billion, but today it is $824 billion. We used to import mobile phones but now we are among the top five exporters of mobile handsets. Our electronic export before 2014 was $6 billion, which has gone up to $38 billion dollars,' Modi said. He added: 'These achievements give strength to our concept of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). We will march together and build a developed India.' Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, Union ministers Manohar Lal Khattar and Ashwini Vaishnaw were also present on the occasion. During his visit, the PM also laid the foundation stone for the Bangalore Metro Phase-3 project and flagged off three Vande Bharat Express trains as he underscored the country's growing infrastructure footprint across sectors by highlighting the increase in the number of metro rail services, railway lines, airports, AIIMS and IITs. This was the first time Modi visited Bengaluru since Operation Sindoor, India's military action against terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation to April's Pahalgam attack, in which 26 civilians were killed. Modi credited the success of the operation to indigenous defence technologies. 'A key factor in the operation's success was 'Make in India' in defence, which had immense contribution from the youth of Karnataka and Bengaluru,' he said. I congratulate the youth of this state,' he said, adding that Pakistan, which 'came to defend the terrorists', was forced 'to its knees' within hours. Praising the city's global standing, he called Bengaluru 'a city that has become a symbol of the rise of the new India… A city that has put India's flag on the global IT map. If there is anything behind Bangalore's success story, it is the hard work and talent of its people.' Siddaramaiah, who spoke before Modisaid the state has been spending more than the Centre on Bengaluru's metro network, even though the project is meant to be jointly funded. 'Works for the Bengaluru Metro started in 2005 when Dr Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister, and the agreement was to take up works in a 50:50 fund ratio. However, the state's contribution to building the metro is high,' he said, urging the Centre to match Karnataka's funding model with that of Maharashtra and Gujarat. In response, Modi called for cooperation over political rivalry. 'Whether it is the central government or the state government, all are committed to serving the people,' he said.

Highlighting irrigation achievements, the CM said that canal water coverage in Punjab's agricultural land had risen from 21% to 63% since he took office, with river water now reaching tail-end villages for the first time in history. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to conserving the state's water resources. The chief minister also stressed that the dreams of the martyrs remain unfulfilled due to lack of sincere efforts in the past, asserting that Punjabis' patriotism needs no validation from those in power. Mann announced that the state will organize historic events to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Later, during a visit to his native village Satauj, Mann interacted with residents and handed over a cheque of ₹1.76 crore to the panchayat for village development.

Congress leader shares 9-month-old video of Gadkari saying 350,000 names were deleted from voters' list
Mumbai: To bolster the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's claims of vote theft in Karnataka and Maharashtra, Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Yashomati Thakur has shared a nine-month old video of union minister Nitin Gadkari saying the names of around 350,000 voters from his parliamentary constituency, Nagpur – including his relatives and hardcore supporters – had been deleted from the voters' list during the Lok Sabha poll in June 2024. 'I will not make allegations against anyone, but it is a fact that 350,000 voters were removed from the list…One of them was my maternal nephew. Even those from my family were removed (from the voters' list),' Gadkari is heard saying after the interviewer asked if the names were deleted to weaken his position in Nagpur. The fact that such allegations were levelled by two different people from two different parties, by those who held 'high positions politically and socially' proved that vote theft did take place, Thakur said. The three-term former MLA from the Teosa assembly seat in Amravati told Hindustan Times that the BJP resorted to vote theft whenever it did not want certain entities to win. 'They must have done the same thing with Gadkari ji,' she said. Thakur also said that on average, her constituency Teosa saw an increase of about 5,000 voters every year. 'But in 2019 and 2024, large numbers of voters were deleted from the list and the population of my constituency also reduced. Do you think that is possible,' she wondered. Thakur won the 2019 assembly poll but lost the 2024 election to the BJP's Rajesh Wankhade by 7,617 votes.
