Up to three years jail term for those involved in film piracy: Government
The gove rnment brought in these changes to the Cinematograph Act two years ago to strengthen the provisions against film piracy.
'The amendments include strict punishment of a minimum three months imprisonment and fine of Rs three lakh, which can be extended up to three years imprisonment and fine up to five per cent of the audited gross production cost," Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan told Parliament last week.
He said Section 6AA and 6AB of the Cinematograph Act prohibit unauthorised recording and transmission of films.
'Newly added Section 7(1B)(ii) of the Cinematograph Act empowers the Government to issue necessary directions to intermediaries for hosting pirated content," Murugan said.
He said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification have been empowered to receive complaints from copyright holders or authorised persons, and issue necessary directions to intermediaries hosting such content.
According to The Rob Report by EY and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the Indian entertainment industry faced a loss of Rs 22,400 crore in 2023, primarily due to piracy. PTI SKU RT RT RT

Six persons involved in running 'unauthorised' fertility centre arrested

The centre is a branch of an Ahmedabad-headquartered company, they said. The centre was found collecting sperm from donors and sending it to Ahmedabad for analysis. It later shared the sperm with medical facilities in Hyderabad for the purpose of fertility, they said. Further investigation was underway. A police official denied media reports that beggars or daily wage labourers were hired for collecting sperm. The racket came to light after a couple discovered through a DNA test that the child, supposedly born through surrogacy, was not theirs, prompting them to approach the police. Indian-origin pilot arrested in US on charges of sex crimes against child
An Indian-origin pilot was arrested on charges of sex crimes against a child, shortly after his flight landed at San Francisco International Airport, US authorities said. Rustom Bhagwagar, 34, a Delta airline pilot, was arrested on the evening of July 26, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Investigation Division said in a statement on Monday. At about 9:35 PM on Saturday, authorities, with the assistance of Homeland Security Investigations, boarded the plane to arrest him, it County Office said it had been investigating since April 2025 after receiving a report of sex crimes against a child, and an arrest warrant was later secured for Bhagwagar. Bhagwagar, of Florida, was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on five counts of oral copulation with a child under 10 years of age. He is being held in lieu of $5 million bail, the statement said. A report in said that passengers reported seeing multiple federal agents push into the cockpit Saturday and arrest Bhagwagar shortly after the plane landed in San quoted a statement by Delta to say that the pilot has been suspended from the airline pending the investigation."Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful conduct and will fully cooperate with law enforcement," the Delta spokesperson said, according to the report. The girl alleges her mother knew about the abuse because she was present for some of the sexual acts.
