Kazan Forum: Pakistan identifies six potential trade corridors
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has identified six potential trade corridors connecting Central Asia, Europe, and Russia through China, Afghanistan and Iran. These include road networks from Karachi to Moscow via China and Kazakhstan, from Gwadar to Moscow via Afghanistan and through Turkmenistan and Iran to Azerbaijan and Russia.
Addressing the closing session of the Kazan Forum, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan stated that Pakistan does not merely aspire to serve as a transit point between South Asia and Central Asia, but rather aims to function as an economic bridge.
He emphasized that Pakistan has been actively engaged in regional cooperation through various agreements signed in recent years and including proactive participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). He highlighted that the Mazar-e-Sharif to Kohat Railway Project is expected to cost approximately $633 million.

Abdul Aleem Khan pointed out that Gwadar Port has already started shipment and cargo services while Pakistan intends to facilitate Central Asia's access to warm waters.
Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan reiterated Pakistan's deep interest in enhancing North-South connectivity in the Communications Sector. He said that in Pakistan Sukkur, Hyderabad Motorway M-6 is a focal project for good investment. Federal Minister further noted that since 2023, the National Logistics Cell (NLC) has been providing cargo services to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
Moreover, in August last year, Pakistan introduced Visa-On-Arrival facilities for citizens of 126 countries to promote trade and investment. In his address, Federal Minister for Communications elaborated on Pakistan's strategic plans to connect Karachi, Quetta, and Gwadar with Central Asia and Europe through road networks.
He also revealed ongoing work on a pilot project for a Railway line to Russia via Iran. Abdul Aleem Khan welcomed the holding of the Kazan Forum and reaffirmed Pakistan's strong commitment to playing an active role in regional development.
He expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for hosting the Forum and extended his appreciation to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin and Minister of Transport Roman Starovoyt for their hospitality.
On the sidelines of the forum, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan held a bilateral meeting and joint session with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, accompanied by their respective delegations. Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors with particular emphasis on investments in the Communications Sectors were focused.
Federal Minister expressed Pakistan's strong interest in developing a broad-based partnership with Russia. Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin underscored Russia's desire for comprehensive regional development and mutual collaboration.
He welcomed Pakistan's participation in the Kazan Forum and expressed willingness to strengthen cooperation with Pakistan in economic, cultural, and other fields.

Pakistan, Iran ink MoU on boosting ties
On the concluding day of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit held in Tehran, a MoU was signed between Pakistan and Iran to enhance bilateral cooperation in the field of communications. The signing ceremony was attended by Iran's Minister for Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh, and Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan who also led the Pakistani delegation in this ECO summit, said a statement received here on Tuesday. A formal meeting was held between the two ministers, accompanied by their respective delegations in which both sides agreed to further strengthen the longstanding relations between the two neighboring countries. Aleem Khan highlighted the deep-rooted religious, cultural and historical ties between Pakistan and Iran, stating that the shared culture, especially from Balochistan to Iran, reflects strong commonalities in daily life and traditions. He welcomed the holding of the ECO summit in Tehran, expressing optimism that the platform would yield positive outcomes for the region. Iranian Minister Farzaneh Sadegh expressed readiness for all possible cooperation in Pakistan's Communications sector and affirmed Iran's commitment to advancing bilateral projects.

Chicago wheat turns higher
PARIS/SINGAPORE: Chicago wheat rose on Tuesday to reverse an earlier fall as news of further Ukrainian strikes against Russian targets kept attention on war escalation and offset supply pressure from better-than-expected US crop ratings. Corn and soybeans rebounded after hitting six-month and seven-week lows, respectively, that were also linked to good crop conditions. The most-active wheat contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) ended the overnight trading session up 0.9% at $5.43-3/4 a bushel. The contract had risen sharply during Monday's session as a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia shifted attention back on the war between the two grain exporters. Prices pared their gains by Monday's close and then fell earlier on Tuesday as immediate fears of war escalation subsided and higher than anticipated scores for wheat conditions in a weekly US Department of Agriculture crop progress report. However, news that Ukraine had hit the road and rail bridge linking Russia and the Crimean peninsula, as well as also knocking out power in parts of other Russian-held territory in southern Ukraine, later revived concerns about a hardening conflict between the two grain exporting countries. 'It looks like the Ukrainians are pursuing their attacks,' a European trader said. Favourable Northern Hemisphere supply prospects, slow international demand and a bounce in the dollar index, which makes US grain dearer overseas, nonetheless kept a lid on wheat prices, traders said. CBOT corn added 0.9% to $4.42 a bushel, after reaching its lowest since early December at $4.34-1/4 earlier in the session. Soybeans rose 0.6% to $10.39-3/4 a bushel to hold above Monday's seven-week low of $10.32-1/2. The USDA rated 67% of US soybeans in good to excellent condition in its initial ratings of the 2025 soy crop, while for corn, the agency's rating improved to 69% good-to-excellent.
