SPRING HILL, Fla. (WFLA) — New details have emerged, explaining why a Hernando County middle school teacher found himself without a job and behind bars Monday, with the possibility of soon being deported from the U.S.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office said its investigation began after deputies learned of allegations that Jonathan Rowe, 45, a math teacher at Explorer K-8, had shown nude photos of himself to one of his students.
5 men charged in connection to 2023 hit-and-run that killed Sarasota man
The 15-year-old student told detectives he was in Rowe's classroom during a planning period. He and Rowe had recently taken a photo together, and when the student asked to see it, Rowe began scrolling through images on his phone.
Rowe would occasionally stop scrolling, pausing on what appeared to be photos of his genitalia, the student reported.
The teacher then asked the 15-year-old to take his phone into the school bathroom and take pictures of his own genitalia to then show him, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities said the student refused to do as asked.
Investigators conducted an interview with Rowe, during which they said he admitted to having nude photos on his phone but declined to answer whether he had showed them to the student.
The middle school teacher was arrested at his Spring Hill home on Monday on charges of distributing obscene material to a minor and using a two-way device during the commission of a felony.
A spokesperson for the Hernando County School District confirmed Rowe had been employed as a middle school teacher at Explorer K-8 since August. His profile on the school's website showed he taught math for grades six through eight.
He was terminated last week on Wednesday, May 14 and 'will not be allowed to return,' according to the school district.
'The Hernando County School District is committed to fostering a safe learning environment with a zero-tolerance stance against those who put our students' well-being in jeopardy,' a spokesperson for the school district wrote in an email.
The sheriff's office said Rowe is a citizen of Jamaica and was in the United States on a J-1 visa — a type of visa that allows foreign nationals to enter the U.S. for educational or exchange programs.
Authorities said Tuesday Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were notified for the purposes of starting the deportation process.
No other victims have been identified, according to the sheriff's office. However, the investigation remained ongoing Tuesday.
Anyone who has additional information is asked to call the Hernando County Sheriff's Office at 352-754-6830.

‘It is appalling': Parents file lawsuit against PBL teacher, district, admin

PAXTON, Ill. (WCIA) — A lawsuit is peeling back the curtain of what parents said their children faced while at school and practice in Ford County. It includes accusations of grooming and sexually assaulting kids for more than a decade — and the families feel the Paxton-Buckley-Loda School District didn't do enough to stop it. WCIA previously reported about complaints around teacher and coach Robert Pacey. The suit calls him out… But doesn't stop there. Three people, including two parents, are suing the PBL school district and several administrators for what they said is a lack of action. PBL District 210 Superintendent announces resignation The suit said the PBL Junior High administration was made aware that Pacey needed to improve his interactions with students in 2009. That's when accusations of inappropriate touching and behavior started. A lawyer representing those who filed the suit said it only got worse from there. 'One of the main frustrations for people in the community is that there have been so many reports,' Chicago-based lawyer Bhavani Raveendran said. Reports stretch back 16 years. Raveendran filed the suit and said allegations about teacher and coach Robert Pacey only continued from there. The PBL School District got several more complaints about his behavior from students and several teachers as well. 'So many individuals reaching out and speaking out about prior reports that have been made, and they have been coming out of the woodwork on social media and in other sources,' Raveendran said. Special prosecutor investigating 2 Ford Co. teachers accused of inappropriate conduct with students But the suit said it didn't stop despite these red flags. It said two students who attended PBL Junior High both told principal Josh Didier that Pacey was extremely inappropriate with girls in class. The document said he touched students — looked up and down their skirts — and accidentally touched their breasts. 'It does not appear that a lot of action was taken to protect kids in the event that these were complaints that were being made based on incidents that did occur,' Raveendran said. The suit said another one of those happened in 2021 involving the plaintiff named Minor A. She said Pacey hit her on the head at a track meet and said if she didn't shut up he was going to tape her mouth shut. She said she experienced headaches days after. A couple months later she said she was at a practice Pacey was running. She said he told her she needed to change her shorts because they were not what she would race in. When she went into the locker room — she said Pacey followed her inside and made her change into tighter ones in front of him. GCMS school board votes to dismiss teacher after alleged inappropriate texts to student Between 2009 and 2021, the lawsuit said he was moved between positions — suspended — but never fired and an investigation with DCFS was never started. 'Multiple of my clients are students that do not want to see younger students put in a similar situation,' Raveendran said. They're asking for $50,000 plus legal costs for each of the 14 counts alleged. WCIA reached out to the PBL School District several times several times on Tuesday — and was told they didn't have anyone in to handle it. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Crestview High School teacher arrested for alleged sexual relationship with student in early 2000s

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) — A longtime teacher in Okaloosa County has been arrested and charged following an investigation into an alleged sexual relationship with a student that began more than two decades ago. Timothy John Sexton, 58, a current teacher at Crestview High School and former teacher at Pryor Middle School, was taken into custody Tuesday morning at his home in Holt. The arrest was carried out by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) and the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force. According to the OCSO, Sexton is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a female student between April 2001 and July 2005. Investigators say the relationship began when the victim was 14 years old and continued until she was 17. Sexton faces charges of sexual battery by a person in custodial authority and sexual battery involving a victim between the ages of 12 and 18. He is currently being held at the Okaloosa County Jail without bond. The investigation began in late March 2025 after the sheriff's office and the Okaloosa County School District received a tip through the FortifyFL app, a platform designed to report suspicious activity in Florida schools. Interviews with the victim and other witnesses ultimately led investigators to establish probable cause for Sexton's arrest. 'There is no expiration date on seeking justice for victims,' Sheriff Eric Aden said in a statement. 'This arrest underscores our unwavering commitment to pursuing the truth, no matter how much time has passed. We are proud of the work done by our investigators and encourage anyone who has been a victim to come forward.' The Okaloosa County School District confirmed Sexton had been placed on administrative leave following the initial report and will now be recommended for suspension without pay pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings. 'Our teachers are held to the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and integrity when it comes to the safety and well-being of our students,' Superintendent Marcus Chambers said in a statement. 'Despite the significant time that has passed, if the allegations against this employee are substantiated, we will respond swiftly and appropriately. This is a zero-tolerance issue.' The school district said it had immediately notified the Florida Department of Children and Families and the sheriff's office upon receiving the FortifyFL report. No additional details about the victim are being released due to the nature of the charges. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
