Greece Arcadia students win RBTL ‘Stars of Tomorrow' competition

Yahoo23-05-2025

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Two students from Greece Arcadia High School, Tessa Meyers and Ian Royse are the 2025 'Stars of Tomorrow New York City Bound' winners.
Next month, Meyers and Royse will represent Rochester in the 2025 National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) also known as the Jimmy Awards.
They will compete with more than 100 student performers from across the country in New York City. This is Royse's second year participating in the Jimmy Awards.
The RBTL competition Thursday night included 40 students from area high school theatre programs. In the first round, judges selected twenty students to perform the role they performed at school this year and one minute from a song of their choice.
After that round, the judges narrowed the group down to ten who performed a final round before the two students were announced.
Holly Valentine, the Education Director at RBTL says this competition is about all the kids not just the two winners.
'They're performing on a Broadway stage, they're performing for Broadway professionals. They are learning all the things they will need if they are going on in this business which many of them hope to do,' said Valentine.
The students were cheered on by their families, friends, music teachers and classmates during the competition that lasted over two hours.
WROC-TV is a proud sponsor and partners with the Rochester Broadway Theatre League. News 8 hosted a 'Fan Favorite' web contest after the nominees were announced on May 9. The Rochester community visited rochesterfirst.com to vote for their favorite student.
News 8 Evening Anchor Theresa Marsenburg announced this year's winner at the beginning of Thursday's competition. Aubrey Puccio from LeRoy Jr/Sr High School received the most votes and won 4 VIP Box Seats, parking and passes to the President's Lounge to a performance of Clue this fall at RBTL'S Auditorium Theatre.

Nicole Scherzinger, a new Tony Award winner, gave a stunning performance that might make you weep

Nicole Scherzinger had a big night at the Tony Awards on Sunday. Scherzinger, a former member of the musical group Pussycat Dolls, won her first-ever Tony Award for her performance as Norma Desmond in the Broadway revival of 'Sunset Blvd.,' which also won an award for best musical revival. An emotional Scherzinger said in her acceptance speech that the award was 'a testament that love always wins.' Earlier in the night, Scherzinger gave a gorgeous performance during the telecast, singing a ballad 'As If We Never Said Goodbye.' Appearing barefoot on a smoke-filled stage in a simple black dress, Scherzinger's powerful performance earned a standing ovation from the audience, which included Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wrote the music for the production. Stage and screen icon Glenn Close, who played the role of main character Norma Desmond in the original 1994 Broadway production, introduced Scherzinger's performance. Close earned a Tony Award in 1995 for her work in the musical, along with several other accolades. She went on to reprise the role in the 2017 revival of the show. Earlier this year, Close was among those to give the production rave reviews, calling the show a 'thrilling experience' on her Instagram. 'Sunset Blvd.' is based on the Oscar-winning 1950 Billy Wilder film 'Sunset Boulevard' and follows a fading screen star who lives in the past when she was queen of the silent film era, languishing in her decrepit Los Angeles mansion located on the titular boulevard. The original stage production opened in London in 1993. 'Sunset Blvd' won three Tonys Sunday. CNN's Dan Heching contributed to this report.

Trump's First Words at Kennedy Center Dinner Were a Diss

President Donald Trump kicked off a Monday dinner for the Kennedy Center board with a dig at their own organization. 'What a group of good friends,' Trump said of Kennedy Center's leadership as he took the podium at the White House event. 'We're gonna bring this place back. It's not so good. I thought it was gonna be beautiful.' The president appeared to be recounting his visit to the legendary arts hub in March, when he lamented that it was in 'tremendous disrepair' and went on a litany of everything he wanted to see changed, from the decor to the seats. The Kennedy Center has been one of many tense battlegrounds in Trump's bid to remake the federal government in his image. In February, he fired the institution's board members to name himself chair and install high-profile MAGA figures such as Laura Ingraham and Richard Grenell. 'The Kennedy Center was in dire shape,' Trump told the new board on Monday. 'It's been neglected very badly, and it needs an infusion of different things, including probably funds. But I think we're going to do very well when we get some money from Congress to fix it, because it's so important.' The president accused Kennedy Center's previous leadership of wasting millions of dollars on 'rampant political propaganda, DEI, and inappropriate shows.' 'Who thinks of these ideas?' he asked, drawing laughter from the crowd. 'It's different. We're bringing our country back so fast.' Trump, a longtime Broadway fan, earlier identified his favorites, including Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, as examples of 'non-woke' shows that he wanted to promote. The Kennedy Center's new lineup, unveiled Monday, includes The Outsiders, Spamalot, Back to the Future, and Moulin Rouge. Chicago and Mrs. Doubtfire, shows that feature characters usually played by a man crossdressing as a woman, will also be coming to the arts institution, despite Trump's earlier comments criticizing the Kennedy Center for having 'featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth.' Trump touted that the Kennedy Center has so far balanced its budget, 'eliminated DEI initiatives in all cases, brought back family-friendly programming that will attract large audiences once again, and launched a plan to renovate the building and reclaim the grandeur as a landmark really a Washington landmark—which it always was.'

Oprah seemingly threw shade at Patti LuPone during the Tony Awards

Oprah seemingly threw shade at Patti LuPone during the Tony Awards The 2025 Tony Awards paid very little mind to the recent Patti LuPone controversy that made waves in the Broadway community recently, but Oprah Winfrey was seemingly the only one to make reference to it during Sunday night's show. In the lead-up to this year's Tony Awards, LuPone made incredibly disparaging remarks about six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald and fellow Tony-winner Kecia Lewis in a New Yorker profile. The Broadway community was furious at the slight, so much so that LuPone eventually apologized for the comments, stating "I regret my flippant and emotional responses during this interview, which were inappropriate, and I am devastated that my behavior has offended others and has run counter to what we hold dear in this community". Broadway actors such as James Monroe Iglehart and others were asked about the controversy on the Tonys' red carpet, but the show itself steered pretty clear of the topic for the majority of the night. That is until Oprah took the stage to announce the winners of Best Actress in a Musical, where McDonald was nominated. In the lead-up to announcing the winner, Oprah seemingly threw shade at LuPone and the "lively conversations among theater fans" that ensued. "Lotta talking going on" indeed!
