RRTS trains start final 17km trial run in Meerut
The RRTS aims to connect Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut through high-speed trains. Of the full 82km route, 55km is already operational, covering two stations in Delhi, eight in Ghaziabad, and one in Meerut.
'We've begun trial runs on the final stretch between Shatabdi Nagar and Modipuram. A separate trial between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi is also underway. Once both sections receive approval, we aim to make the full 82km corridor operational by June,' said Puneet Vats, chief public relations officer, NCRTC.
On April 15, HT reported that trials on the final 17km Meerut section were expected to begin in early May.
The 23km stretch in Meerut includes 13 stations, from Meerut (South) to Modipuram. Of this, a 6km segment—from Meerut (South) to Shatabdi Nagar—has already seen trial runs of both six-coach RRTS trains and three-coach local Metro trains since February. Both train types share the same infrastructure.
'Currently, RRTS trains are undergoing trials up to Modipuram, while local Metro trials are active between Meerut (South) and Meerut (Central). We may consider simultaneous trial runs of both in future to assess shared operations. For now, the focus is on opening both stretches under trial in Delhi and Meerut by June,' an official said.
The NCRTC has so far commissioned several sections in phases: Sahibabad to Duhai (17km) on 23 October 2023; Duhai to Modinagar (North) on 6 March 2024; Modinagar (North) to Meerut (South) on 18 August 2024; and Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar (13km) on 5 January this year.
RRTS trains will halt at four stations in Meerut: Meerut (South), Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram. The local Metro service, intended for short-distance city travel, will stop at all 13 stations, including Partapur, Rithani, Bhrampuri, Meerut (Central), Bhaisali, MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut (North), and Modipuram Depot.
The RRTS project, estimated at ₹30,274 crore, is expected to be completed by June 2025. Once operational, it will cut the travel time between Meerut and Delhi to approximately 55 minutes.

The Blue Line, stretching 32 km from Kavi Subhash to Dakshineswar along the city's north-south axis, has been essential to Kolkata's transport system since its inception in Oct 1984, with subsequent expansions. The elevated Shahid Khudiram station began operations alongside Kavi Subhash terminal on Mahalaya on October 7, 2010, marking the Blue Line's final southern extension, which now serves approximately 6 lakh passengers daily. Earlier, while Kavi Subhash station recorded 22,000-25,000 daily visitors, Shahid Khudiram station saw a modest footfall of less than 10,000. Over the last three days, its footfall has increased to around 20,000 during peak hours. "People were barely aware of this station close to Dhalai Bridge in Garia. Many of my colleagues didn't even know that it has been named after freedom fighter Khudiram Bose. For riders, it was just one of the stations. It has suddenly become crucial for Metro commuters," said Sudakshina Sen, a govt schoolteacher and Sonarpur resident, who takes the Metro to travel to her workplace in Hazra.

Mock drill checks Delhis preparedness for earthquake, industrial accidents
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) A field-level, multi-agency disaster management mock drill was carried out at 55 locations across Delhi and some NCR districts on Friday to assess response preparedness in case of earthquake or industrial accidents. The exercise began with the triggering of a simulated earthquake scenario at 9.03 am, followed by mock chemical leaks in industrial and transport zones in all the 11 districts of the national capital. The chief executive officer of Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Krishan Kumar, told PTI that it was a 'well-planned" exercise at 55 locations across Delhi besides two districts in Uttar Pradesh and five in Haryana. 'The mock drill involved a simulated earthquake and creation of industrial disaster scenarios. It went on smoothly at all the locations. There was feedback of some gaps," Kumar said, pointing to the vastness of Delhi at geographic and demographic levels. He said a 'major issue" related to earthquake was that some part of Delhi lied on a ridge and some in the Yamuna floodplains that are highly critical zones requiring an enhanced level of preparation. 'Preparedness is the only way to save lives from disasters," he noted The feedback collected through after action reports will help in updating the state and district-level disaster plans, Kumar said. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Indian Army and the governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh held an 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra' earlier this week that culminated with the field-level mock drill on Friday. The exercise was conducted at 55 locations, including hospitals, schools, Metro stations, and power plants, among others. More than 20 departments, including Delhi Police, fire services, health, revenue, education, MCD, civil defence, Home Guards, RWAs, schools, Metro staff, and market associations were involved in the process. In Delhi, the mock drill was focused on validating the Incident Response System (IRS) at state, district, and site levels to test the state emergency operations centre (SEOC) activation and inter-agency coordination protocols, assessing readiness of emergency medical services, fire response units, and chemical leak protocols, the DDMA said. It also aimed to test and improve preparedness of the response mechanism, communication systems and coordination between various local authorities and emergency services in the event of a high-magnitude earthquake followed by chemical disaster, it said. During the exercise, the chemical disaster response was simulated at industrial clusters and godowns in selected locations across West, North-East, and South-West Delhi districts. The emergency operations centre of the DDMA remained operational throughout the mock drill. receiving live updates, media reports, and coordinating with all 11 district-level emergency operation centres. Field reports and situation assessments were received in real-time via webcasting, mobile teams, and control room coordination, it said. Brigadier B S Thakar, nodal officer from the NDMA for the mock exercise, emphasised the importance of such exercises in preparing for potential disasters. A brain storming session and debriefing with all the stakeholders was held to draw out the lessons from the mock drill. The DDMA will now collect detailed after action reports from the district magistrates and the departments to identify the gaps identified in infrastructure, IRS activation, public messaging, and inter-agency coordination, a statement said. Kolkata Metro To Halt Services On August 3 For Final ATO Test, Full East-West Line Nears Launch
Kolkata Metro to Conduct ATO Test Run Between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade Kolkata Metro on Thursday announced that services along the Howrah Maidan to Esplanade stretch of the East-West corridor would be suspended on August 3 for Automatic Train Operation (ATO) testing. Normal train services, however, will be available between Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram stations of the North-South corridor on that day, a Metro spokesperson said. Trial runs along the Esplanade-Sealdah section of the East-West corridor had been conducted several times since January this year, and 'traffic blocks' were enforced in the Sealdah to Sector V stretch twice to check the efficacy of the signalling system. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has given a clearance nod for the Sealdah-Esplanade section, which had been affected by subsidence of earth due to the bursting of an aquifer during tunneling work at Bowbazar in 2019.
