"We have written a letter to both deputy commissioner Lakshmikanth Reddy and forest minister Eshwar B Khandre seeking to disclose the report," Gopinath said. The committee, according to Gopinath, is not against development but aims to conserve the environment. Samajwadi Party, democracy two banks of a river: Yogi Adityanath
The Samajwadi Party and democracy are two banks of a river, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said in the state assembly on the opening day of the Monsoon session on Monday. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath speaks in the state assembly on the opening day of the Monsoon session on Monday. (Deepak Gupta/HT Photo) Replying to the issue of alleged misbehaviour with the leader of opposition Mata Prasad Prasad in Gorakhpur, the chief minister criticised the Samajwadi Party for doing politics of obstruction. He accused the SP of hiding behind the 'facade' of democracy while subjecting traders to atrocities and a 'goonda tax' during its rule. Asserting that no development took place during the Samajwadi Party rule, he said, 'During the SP regime, encephalitis claimed the lives of 700-1500 children every year, including hundreds in Mata Prasad Pandey's constituency in Siddharthnagar, yet no action was taken. Health, education, and development have never been your priorities.' Recalling the Sambhal incident, the chief minister said his government is carrying out a purification drive in the area to undo the negativity spread by the party. 'The SP is still clinging to its old habits, opposing development at every step,' he remarked. Accusing SP of being anti-growth, he said the party's politics in Sambhal, Bahraich, and Gorakhpur was rooted in obstruction, not progress. 'The BJP and NDA governments are committed to development, but the SP simply cannot tolerate it,' he said. Criticising the Samajwadi Party for opposing the Gorakhpur Heritage Corridor, he called its stance 'anti-development.' He said Gorakhpur traders opposed Pandey's visit because of bitter memories of the SP-era fear and Goonda Tax. 'The traders have not forgotten the exploitation they suffered under SP rule. You went there uninvited, trying to obstruct development, and they respectfully opposed you,' he said, stressing that people cannot expect either security or development from the SP. 'The corridor will link iconic landmarks, including Ghantaghar, the city's oldest market, and the Gita Press. I inspected the site three days before the Leader of Opposition's visit, personally meeting every trader. Long plagued by congestion and illegal encroachments, the market is now seeing road expansion and decongestion works,' he said. The CM assured that all affected traders will receive fair compensation, with no one left to bear losses in the name of development.

Monsoon Session of Assembly Begins: Uproar after Adityanath says purification drive on in Sambhal, targets LoP Pandey
The Uttar Pradesh Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Monday, the first day of the monsoon session, as Opposition Samajwadi Party members protested against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's remarks on Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey. The chief minister's remark that his government was carrying out 'shudhikaran abhiyan' (a purification drive) in Sambhal to 'clean the mess created during the previous SP regime' also led to Opposition members entering the well of the House. As soon as the House convened at 11 am, LoP Pandey complained that he was manhandled during his visit to Gorakhpur to meet people affected by the upcoming 'heritage corridor' project. Speaking in the Assembly, Pandey said that not just Gorakhpur, he has been stopped in a similar manner at several other places, including Sambhal, where he had gone to meet the victims of November 24 violence that broke out during the survey of Shahi Jama Masjid. Demanding an inquiry into the protests, Pandey pointed out that this was happening in a democracy and in the CM's own area. Adityanath hails from Gorakhpur. Replying to the LoP's charge, Chief Minister Adityanath hit out at the main Opposition party, saying 'the Samajwadi Party (SP) and democracy are like two different shores of a river' that can never meet. Alleging that the Leader of Opposition was 'unnecessarily being made a pawn by some' for political benefit, Adityanath said: 'Since when do you (SP) believe in democracy. It does not suit you.' Accusing the SP leaders of only creating 'nuisance' and 'hurdles' in the development of the state by their 'negativity', the CM said: 'Sambhal mein jo nagna tandav Samajwadi sarkar ke samay kiya tha.. aaj uska shudhikaran ka abhiyan chal raha hai (Due to the mess created by the SP rule in Sambhal, we are undertaking a purification drive in Sambhal).' Alleging that the previous SP government did not bother about children dying with encephalitis in Gorakhpur or in the neighbouring areas, Adityanath accused the Leader of Opposition of going to Gorakhpur 'just to do politics'. 'It was not the BJP leaders who protested against you, but the traders, who opposed you. They are angry with SP because they had to pay gonda tax during your regime,' he said, adding that three days before Pandey's visit, he had gone to Gorakhpur to review the development of Heritage Corridor. 'There was no protest. The project is being undertaken to free the area of encroachment as there are many landmarks, including Gita Press, Ghanta Ghar etc,' Adityanath said. Calling the protest against the LoP 'mild', Adityanath said, 'Agar koi aur hota to bahut qayede se unko sahi dhang se jawab dete (Had it been someone else, a befitting reply would have been given)'. Following this, the SP legislators accused the BJP government of being 'anti-Brahmin' by 'threatening' Pandey, and started raising slogans such as 'gundagardi ki yeh sarkakr nahi chalegi' and 'Pandey ji ka yeh apman nahi shega Hindustan'. The House was then adjourned till 2.20 pm.

SP walks out of UP Vidhan Parishad over school merger
The Samajwadi Party (SP) staged a walkout in the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council) on the school merger issue on the first day of the Monsoon Session of the State Legislative Assembly on Monday. SP legislators staging a protest at the Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow on August 11. (HT photo) SP MLCs Mukul Yadav, Ashutosh Sinha, Balram Yadav, Rajendra Chaudhary, Jasmeer Ansari and the leader of opposition in the Vidhan Parishad Lal Bihari Yadav raised the issue. 'The level of education in the BJP regime is deteriorating day by day. The current dispensation doesn't want children of Dalits, backwards and minorities to get educated and that is why it is conspiring to keep children of these classes away from education,' alleged Lal Bihari Yadav. 'The government is planning to hand over education into private hands. The government should not look at education as a business. Instead of closing the schools, the government should focus on increasing the number of students,' he claimed. Yadav also claimed that madrasas in the state, which were built by the money contributed as Zakat (donation) by the Muslim community, had to face unnecessary audits and investigations. Meanwhile, basic education minister Sandeep Singh in his reply said school merger was being done to improve the quality of education and promote classroom learning. 'The state of education system in UP before 2017 is not hidden from anyone. Earlier, no one used to talk about increasing the number of students. There were around three crore children who were not getting education during the SP regime,' the minister said. 'School merger will also increase the grant money from the Centre which is given as per the number of students,' he added. However, soon the SP MLCs interrupted and staged a walkout. Earlier, SP MLC Man Singh Yadav raised the issue of the old pension scheme. 'If the new pension scheme is that good, why has it not been implemented for legislators and in the judiciary?' he asked. Another SP MLC Ashutosh Sinha demanded that the state government employees should be given a choice between the old and the new pension schemes. Moreover, BJP MLCs Jai Pal Singh 'Vyastha' and Anoop Kumar Gupta congratulated Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force for being the first Indian ever to set foot on the International Space Station (ISS).
