Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on leave over mysterious MLB investigation

New York Post6 hours ago
Less than 10 hours before he was slated to make a start Thursday for the Guardians, starting pitcher Luis Ortiz was mysteriously placed on leave by MLB.
The league announced Ortiz has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through the All-Star break — games resume July 18 — due to an investigation.
And that was as far as the details went regarding the situation.

With the ambiguous nature of the release, speculation immediately arose on social media surrounding the nature of the investigation.
Cleveland's release did not add any clarity either.

'The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation,' the statement read. 'The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league's confidential investigative process.'
Ortiz has been a regular in the Guardians' rotation this season.
He's 4-9 with 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts compared to 42 walks spanning 16 starts.

Ortiz was acquired by Cleveland in December after he spent three seasons in the big leagues with the Pirates.
His best statistical season with Pittsburgh came last season when he posted a 3.32 ERA, 107 strikeouts and 42 walks across 135 ⅔ innings. He made 15 starts among 37 apperances.
Ortiz had a 3.93 ERA across his three seasons with the Pirates.
With his sudden absence for the Guardians' rotation, Joey Cantillo will get the start Thursday night against the Cubs at Wrigley.
Cantillo has made 21 appearances for Cleveland this season, all in relief, and holds a 3.81 ERA.

Ortiz's leave certainly isn't ideal for the Guardians as they have struggled immensely as of late.
Cleveland entered Thursday at 40-44 after losing six straight games.
The Guardians dropped into third place in the AL Central, behind both the Twins and the AL-leading Tigers, and are also four games back of a wild-card position.

Jurickson Profar Sends Message on Treatment From Braves Fans

Jurickson Profar Sends Message on Treatment From Braves Fans originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Back from an 80-game suspension, Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar returned to the lineup on Wednesday, marking his 12th major-league season. Advertisement Originally a member of the Texas Rangers, Profar debuted at just 19 years old in 2012 and spent five seasons with the organization before being traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2016. Profar is most celebrated for his late-career renaissance with the San Diego Padres, where he spent five seasons anchoring their outfield and becoming a memorable contributor to multiple playoff runs. During his age-31 season in 2024 with the Padres, Profar produced the best year of his career: he made his first All-Star team, smashed a career-high 24 home runs and posted an .839 OPS. That breakout season earned him a three-year, $42 million deal with the Braves in January. However, after just four games, he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and was handed an 80-game suspension. After striking out in his first at-bat back, boos greeted him. 'They have every right to do whatever they want,' he said, per Mark Bowman. 'I made a mistake, and I need to pay for it.' Later, he flipped the script in the bottom of the seventh, leading off the inning with a solo home run. 'They cheered?' Profar laughed afterward. 'I was too locked in. I didn't notice.' His immediate impact following the suspension will be key as Atlanta currently sits at 39-46 and 6.5 games back of a wild-card spot. Bears Predicted to Land Star Divisional Rival Defender in Free Agency

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Bears have a brand-new coaching staff led by former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Johnson has the tall task of taking a 5-12 team and leading them to a positive record and playoff berth. More news: Aaron Rodgers Hosts Private Workout With Steelers Offense While the Bears have a solid team, they still have a huge lack on the defensive end side of things. Dayo Odeyingbo and Montez Sweat are solid players, but not enough to make believers out of fans and pundits. The Bears' defense was one of the worst in 2025 in allowing rushing yards, with the league's fifth-worst, allowing 136.6 yards per game on the ground. The pass rush was dead center, allowing 217.9 yards per game in the passing category. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JANUARY 18: Defensive end Za'Darius Smith #99 of the Detroit Lions rushes the passer during the first half of the NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Washington Commanders, at Ford Field on January 18, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. MoreMore news: Fans React to Minkah Fitzpatrick Training Video Ahead of Dolphins Return Simply put, the Bears need pass rushers, and they did not acquire anyone new during free agency. That means they could go for a proven veteran, and may look to none other than a divisional rival. NFL insider Albert Breer not only predicted the Bears may address their pass rush woes, but also indicated they could target former Detroit Lions star Za'Darius Smith. "I think that's all relative to what's out there. So they'll get a look at D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson at running back, and Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo (who plays some inside on passing downs) on the edges when the pads go on, and then maybe consider guys such as Jamaal Williams at running back or Za'Darius Smith or Matthew Judon as edge rushers," Breer wrote. Smith would be a solid contributor and a clear upgrade. He secured nine sacks with the Lions and Cleveland Browns in 2024, but was released by the Lions in March. It is a bit strange that he has not been picked up by any team, and it is believed that he won't wait long to join a new team. Granted, the Bears might want to see what their defense can do in training camp and preseason, but if the pass rush is not where it needs to be, they might choose to call Smith and see if they can strike a deal with the All-Pro. Newly promoted defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard needs to evaluate the group during training camp, and improving the pass rush and defensive end situation should be at the top of the list in terms of red flag issues. Smith is also a consummate pro and would be valuable to any roster. The Bears signing him after his time with the Lions would be fantastic. Yankees keep changing faces but the infield dysfunction is on the front office

Yankees keep changing faces but the infield dysfunction is on the front office originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Just maybe the problem wasn't Gleyber Torres. The Yankees didn't just let Torres walk out the door as a free agent last winter. They saddled him with the blame on the way out the door. Advertisement When Jazz Chisholm Jr. was acquired last season, the front office needed to make a decision: where would he play? The Yankees asked Gleyber to move from second to third. He wasn't comfortable with it and said so. Suddenly, Torres was selfish and hurting Chisholm and the team. Now, Torres is having one of the best seasons of his career in Detroit and was just named the starting second baseman for the American League All-Star team. Meanwhile, Chisholm is still playing third base for the Yankees. And let's be honest, he's still struggling to do it. New York Yankees general manager Brian Carchietta-Imagn Images So maybe it's time we stop pretending this was Gleyber's failure and ask why is history repeating itself this year with Chisholm and DJ LeMahieu. Advertisement And maybe it's time we talk about Brian Cashman. Because while fans take aim at LeMahieu, assuming, with no direct quote to back it up, that he's refusing to play anywhere but second, there have been reports that it's the front office that wants Chisholm at third base. We've even heard from reporters that the Yankees wanted to keep Jazz at third because it might be easier to trade for a second baseman. So, let's call it what it really is. This a roster construction failure. Gleyber Torres wasn't the problem. He's now thriving, loose and productive, finally free of the weight that seemed to hang over him in the Bronx. So now, Jazz is out of position again. The infield is unbalanced and there's no easy fix. If the Yankees trade for a third baseman and move Chisholm back to second, will the Yankees designate LeMahieu for assignment with another year left on his six-year, $90 million deal? Because they cannot cut Oswald Peraza without another backup shortstop coming in. Advertisement Maybe the front office should stop blaming players for their discomfort and start asking why they keep building uncomfortable fits. Maybe the fans should understand this isn't on the players. Because what's happening at third base right now? That's not on Gleyber. That's not Chisholm and it's not LeMahieu. That's on Cashman.
