Rare protest in China over viral school bullying case
BEIJING : A large protest erupted in the southwestern Chinese city of Jiangyou, videos on social media showed, after the beating of a young girl by three other teenagers sparked public outrage.
Protests are rare in China, where any and all opposition to the ruling Communist Party and anything seen as a threat to the civil order is swiftly quashed.
But bullying in the country's ultra-competitive education system has touched a public nerve, with a high-profile killing last year sparking national debate over how the law deals with juvenile offenders.
Yesterday, police said two teenage girls were being sent to a correctional school for assaulting and verbally abusing a 14-year-old girl surnamed Lai.
The beating, which took place last month and left multiple bruises on Lai's scalp and knees, was filmed by bystanders who shared it online, police said.
The onlookers and a third girl who participated in the abuse were 'criticised and educated', police said, adding that their guardians had been 'ordered to exercise strict discipline'.
The case drew outrage online from some lamenting the teenagers' punishment did not go further.
And later yesterday, people gathered outside the city hall in Jiangyou, in Sichuan province, with large crowds stretching around the block, footage showed.
Video confirmed by AFP to have been taken outside the city hall showed at least two people forcibly pulled aside by a group of blue-shirted and plainclothes police as well as a woman in a black dress dragged away by her limbs.
'They're sweeping away citizens everywhere,' a person can be heard saying as the woman is dragged away.
More footage taken after dark showed police wearing black SWAT uniforms subduing at least three people at an intersection with hundreds of bystanders.
Today, the city of Jiangyou was the second top-trending topic on the X-like Weibo, before it and related hashtags were censored.
'The sentence is too light… that is why they were so arrogant,' one top-liked Weibo comment under the police statement read.
Today, local authorities said on WeChat that police had punished two people for fabricating information about the school bullying case, warning the public against spreading rumours.
Last year Chinese authorities vowed to crack down on school bullying after a high-profile murder case.
In December, a court sentenced a teenage boy to life in prison for murdering his classmate.
The suspects, all aged under 14 at the time of the murder, were accused of bullying a 13-year-old classmate over a long period before killing him in an abandoned greenhouse.
Another boy was given 12 years in prison, while a third whom the court found did not harm the victim was sentenced to correctional education.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have warned the public against spreading inaccurate information and images related to the Zara Qairina case on social media. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said such actions could jeopardise the ongoing investigation and deny justice to those involved. "The police have detected the circulation of false claims and photographs of a child allegedly linked to the case, which have been uploaded and shared by certain individuals. "The information being shared is inaccurate and has the potential to mislead the public. "Such actions can not only compromise the ongoing investigation but also jeopardise justice for all parties involved," he said in a statement. Khalid reminded the public that such acts are offences under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which prohibits the disclosure of information on the identity, address, school name, and photographs of children involved; Section 203A of the Penal Code for disclosure of information; and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services. He said all investigation processes, including the post-mortem, were being carried out in accordance with existing procedures and legal provisions. He said that compliance with the law was fundamental to the nation's peace and wellbeing, warning that any violations would be met with stern action. It has returned the full preliminary investigation report on the death of Zara to the police. Kedah cops bust major ring, seize cannabis worth RM2.4mil
Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah (right) said the syndicate was believed to have been actively operating since last month. PETALING JAYA : Kedah police crippled a cannabis distribution syndicate with the arrest of five suspects, including a married couple, and the recovery of 66.4kg of the drugs worth an estimated RM2.4 million in an operation last Sunday. Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah said the operation initially resulted in the arrest of three men aged between 24 and 26, Bernama reported. 'The arrests, including that of the 26-year-old main suspect, were made at 1.30pm near the Kuala Muda police headquarters. A total of 64.6kg of cannabis flowers packed in five suitcases and stored in a vehicle were seized. 'This led to another raid at 8.30pm at a house in a nearby residential area, where approximately 1.8kg of cannabis flowers were discovered,' he was quoted as saying. Adzli said the group was believed to have been operating since last month. 'Their modus operandi was to use local residents to travel to a neighbouring country to collect the supply and bring it back here using cars. 'The cars used are handed over to the syndicates on the other side, and within two to three hours, the drugs are loaded into hidden compartments in door panels or in the boot before the cars are returned,' he said. Adzli said two women, aged 24 and 25, including the wife of the main suspect, were also arrested to assist in the investigation. All the suspects are Malaysians. He said further investigations revealed that the syndicate members entered the country through Bukit Kayu Hitam and exited through Padang Besar, Perlis. 'Two of the suspects tested positive for heroin and cannabis. All the suspects have been remanded for a week from the date of arrest until Aug 11 to assist in the investigations,' he said.

Bodies of woman, toddler found floating near Pulau Ketam jetty

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The bodies of a woman and her three-year-old daughter were found floating near the Pulau Ketam jetty in Klang this morning. Klang Selatan deputy police chief Kamal Ariffin Aman Shah said members of the public discovered the bodies in front of the jetty at about 7.30am. He said a bag containing documents belonging to both victims was found near the area. Police and staff from the Pulau Ketam health clinic arrived at the scene and confirmed that the woman and the child were dead, Bernama quoted Kamal as saying. He said a preliminary examination did not find any injuries on the bodies, which were sent to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for a post-mortem. 'No criminal elements have been determined, and police have opened a sudden death report for further investigation,' he said.
