Two Great Games That Couldn't Be More Different Are Free Right Now

Two Great Games That Couldn't Be More Different Are Free Right Now

Yahoo4 days ago

The Epic Game Store is currently giving away two PC games that are both very good, but also extremely different. First up, you can grab a free copy of the beloved indie platformer Limbo. And then, you can snag Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a strange but fun Borderlands spin-off, for the low price of zero dollars.
The Mega Sale event is happening right now on Epic's PC storefront, offering big discounts on a ton of games, including The Last of Us, Cyberpunk 2077, and Grand Theft Auto V's fancy enhanced port. And that's nice and all. But maybe you're getting ready to buy a Nintendo Switch 2, and some games to go along with it. Or you're trying to save money for some other reason. Thankfully, during each week of the sale, Epic is giving out free PC games. And this week's games are the aforementioned Wonderlands and Limbo.
Just a heads-up that these games will only be free until June 5. Meanwhile, the Epic Games Mega Sale event ends on June 12, so we'll get two more freebies before the party wraps up.
Released in 2010, Limbo is a fantastic, bite-sized, black-and-white 2D platformer that made a big splash over a decade ago on Xbox Live Arcade. Since then, this creepy and minimalistic game has been ported to everything and is worth checking out, especially if you loved 2016's Inside, which was developed by the same folks.
Meanwhile, 2022's Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is probably the exact polar opposite of Limbo. Wonderlands is a fantasy-themed Borderlands spin-off featuring melee weapons, magic, and a big overworld map. It's a strange game, but one which I've played through twice and enjoyed thoroughly. If you like Borderlands and haven't played this looter shooter spin-off yet, now is a great time to hop in. And if you're excited about Borderlands 4, launching in September, Wonderlands will keep you busy until then.

The Witcher 4 tech demo ran on a base PS5 to ‘show how much we can optimize'

Arguably the highlight of Epic's State of Unreal keynote was the opening: a sprawling technical demo that showed just how good The Witcher 4 looks in Unreal Engine 5. It showcased a bustling market in a port city, a beautiful forest landscape, and a horse that looked and acted like, well, a horse. Even more impressive was the fact that the demo was running at 60 frames per second on a base model PlayStation 5. According to Julius Girbig, a senior technical animator at Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, the choice of hardware for the demo was very intentional. 'Everyone has the idea of how fast a PS5 is and what kinds of games it can run,' he tells The Verge. 'That's why we specifically wanted to go that route of: let's start with the consoles, let's show how much we can optimize this engine together with Epic and make it work on current gen, instead of running it on some high-end hardware.' Now, to be clear, the UE5 demo is not actually a slice of the final game. Girbig describes it as 'a demonstration of the tools that we are currently building that will eventually power The Witcher 4,' and something that 'does show the style and direction that we're going for, and the fidelity that we're aiming at with the final game.' But whatever it ends up being, and whenever it launches, The Witcher 4 will be a pivotal release for CDPR. After previously creating open-world games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 with its own proprietary engine — sometimes with technically disastrous results — the studio announced in 2022 that it was switching to Unreal. According to Girbig, who didn't work at CDPR until after the shift to Unreal, the decision was made because UE5 'across the board, gives us what we're looking for.' That includes an increased sense of scale necessary for open-world games, with the ability to render hundreds of non-playable characters with more elaborate AI guiding their actions, and also a better production pipeline for managing multiple projects. (An upcoming remake of the first Witcher game is also being made in UE5.) But from an artistic perspective, Girbig says, the move to Epic's engine has a different kind of impact: getting out of the way to allow for more ambitious ideas. 'It allows an artist to express themselves much more easily when the engine isn't a limitation anymore,' he says. 'That's what we're aiming for here. As an artist, for me, this unlocked myself to think bigger, and on bigger scales.'

The Witcher 4 Video Shows New Look at Ciri

During Epic's State of Unreal event, CD Projekt Red showed off some stunning footage of The Witcher 4, promising the most ambitious entry in the iconic series to date. CD Projekt Red came prepared with two videos for fans. The first was a brief cinematic showcasing a group of people being ambushed by a flying creature while in a wagon. Afterward, Ciri can be seen investigating the wreckage before things transition into another video. Following the cinematic of Ciri investigating the wagon's wreckage, things then cut to a 'technological showcase.' CD Projekt Red claims the video is running on a standard PlayStation 5 and outputting in 60 FPS with ray-tracing enabled. While some fans considered it a gameplay video, CDPR told VGC that the video was a separate tech demo set in the world of The Witcher 4 and not the game itself. In the video, Ciri rides into town on her horse, Kelpie, and we're treated to some stunning visuals and physics. After arriving in town, Ciri moves through a crowded market before CDPR's Sebastian Kalemba talks a bit about the game. He noted that the upcoming project is the 'most ambitious' and immersive open-world Witcher game ever. Currently, not a ton about The Witcher 4 is known. The game was revealed last year at The Game Awards, and CDPR has kept mostly quiet on things outside of their presentation today. Originally reported by Anthony Nash on Coming Soon.

Cruise ship passenger in Italy blown overboard by strong winds

CATANIA, Italy – Winds were strong enough to blow a passenger overboard a cruise ship docked in Italy last Friday. The passenger fell into the water off the Norwegian Epic docked in Catania, Sicily, according to a statement Norwegian Cruise Line made to several media outlets. Alaska Slammed By Atmospheric River As Summer Cruise Season Revs Up One passenger, Brian Koning, posted on social media that the 1,080-foot vacation liner broke loose from its moorings amid strong wind gusts around 1 p.m. local time. "All ropes snapped with loud bangs," Koning wrote. The FOX Forecast Center said wind gusts over 30 mph were reported at the nearby Catania-Fontanarossa Airport at the time. The Norwegian Cruise Line Epic was built in 2010 and was last refurbished earlier this year. It can hold up to 4,070 guests, according to the company's website. FOX Weather reached out to Norwegian Cruise Line for a statement but has not yet heard article source: Cruise ship passenger in Italy blown overboard by strong winds
