Chemsdine Talbi joins Sunderland from Club Brugge on five-year contract

Glasgow Times09-07-2025
The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract after the clubs agreed a fee understood to be in the region of £19.5million.
Talbi arrived on Wearside on Tuesday and has completed a medical to join fellow new additions Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki as Regis Le Bris prepares for life back in the top flight.
He said: 'I'm really excited to be here and grateful for the opportunity to play for this club.
'I made the decision because it's a great project with a talented, exciting team full of young players – and that really motivated me.
Welcome to Sunderland AFC, Chemsdine Talbi! ❤️🇲🇦
— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) July 9, 2025
'The Premier League is the biggest and best league in the world, so I'm looking forward to getting started. I know the fans will get behind me from the start, and I can't wait to see them at the stadium.'
Talbi made 38 appearances for Brugge last season, 11 of them in the Champions League, as the club finished second by a point behind Royale Union Saint-Gilloise – Sadiki's former side – in the Jupiler League.
Two of his seven goals for the campaign came in a 3-1 play-off victory at Atalanta in Europe on the way to a 6-1 aggregate defeat by Aston Villa in the last 16.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman added: 'Our momentum and story are powerful, and I think players of Chemsdine's calibre, who are in high demand, are excited by the prospect of playing for Sunderland AFC.
'It's a testament to our recent past and immediate future that he feels this we are the right club for his next step.'

But the Old Trafford side will not get involved in a bidding war for PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, leaving the door open for Chelsea and Manchester City to try to lure the Italian. 6 Ollie Watkins has been in pre-season action for Aston Villa Credit: Getty 6 Gianluigi Donnarumma's PSG future is looking in doubt Credit: Shutterstock Editorial United are weighing up moves for either Aston Villa striker Watkins or Leipzig's Slovenian front man Benjamin Sesko. That rules out any interest in Nicolas Jackson, despite Chelsea being increasingly keen to find a taker for the Senegalese attacker. And any move may only be feasible if United can move on Rasmus Hojlund, preferably on a full-time basis rather than a Marcus Rashford-style loan. With United having spent £130m to give boss Ruben Amorim his two top targets - Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the Old Trafford hierarchy do still want a line-leading upgrade. READ MORE ON MAN UTD devilish Man Utd 'looking to hijack Newcastle's Sesko transfer after holding talks' Contact has been made with the entourages of both potential targets, with Watkins' proven Premier League experience a major plus The England striker, 29, has scored 75 top flight goals since moving to Villa Park. Before that, he was part of a successful attacking unit including Mbeumo at Brentford, a further tick in his box While Villa have dismissed all suggestions of an approach and insisted Watkins is not for sale at any price, they did offer him to Arsenal in the January window, before performing a U-turn after selling Jhon Duran instead. Man Utd stars baffled after being ordered to wear new high-tech JACKET in sizzling 42C heat on pre-season tour of US The Old Trafford club, aware of Villa's public stance, recognise that negotiations may not be simple and could take until the latter days of the summer window next month. Selling Hojlund, and also commanding fees for Alejandro Garnacho and Antony would make meeting hefty price-tags more likely. Meanwhile, United have shelved their interest in Villa keeper Emi Martinez. A loan offer was made and rejected last week but the club's current position is that Andre Onana will start the season as first choice. And that means no move for Donnarumma, whose contract stand-off with PSG has opened up the prospect he might be available. The Italian, with one year left on his deal with the Champions League winners, is seeking a significant mark-up in his £210,000 per week salary. But United are not willing to go there, meaning they will not rival City - who may lose Ederson and could be reluctant to make new signing James Trafford first choice, and Chelsea as potential Prem contenders. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Football set to copy completely different sport's approach to VAR with managers to be given massive new responsibility

This new version of VAR allows managers to request reviews on key decisions such as goals, penalties, direct red cards, and cases of mistaken identity. Under FVS each team gets two reviews per game, and if a challenge is successful, they keep it for later use — if not, they lose that chance. Managers could order a review by twirling their finger in the air and giving the fourth official a review card showing the type of decision being challenged. The referee then consults a pitch-side monitor to reassess the incident, speeding up the process and reducing the costs and chaos associated with traditional VAR. Meanwhile, Spain's top women's league, Liga F, could approve the FVS system as soon as this week, potentially becoming the first major league to fully adopt it. This would mark a significant step toward modernising officiating in women's football, with the Women's Super League currently operating without VAR. Manchester United transfer target breaks silence on summer move: "I'll get there"

Manchester United are keen to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window and have been keeping an eye on Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma Manchester United have been sent a come and get me plea by one of their transfer targets. Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens is one of the players being considered to strengthen the position and he is very keen on a move to Old Trafford. ‌ Lammens is one of the players United are considering after a difficult campaign for Andre Onana, while Altay Bayindir didn't convince when he got a chance either. Onana was dropped by Ruben Amorim during the 2024/25 campaign, only for his back-up Bayindir to fail to take his chance in goal. ‌ The situation has led to much speculation over potential targets this summer, with ambitious interest in Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging. United even approached Villa over a loan deal for Martinez, only for their offer to be rejected out of hand, while Donnarumma is unlikely to swap Champions League winners for a side that finished 15th last season. ‌ Lammens, a 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, is clearly a much more attainable target for United at this stage. He is reportedly available for a fee of around £13m-17m after Antwerp sporting director Marc Overmars signed Taishi Brandon Nozawa to replace him. He played the full 90 minutes in his side's 1-1 draw against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the league at the weekend. But speaking afterwards, it is clear that Lammens is courting a move away from Belgium. ' Manchester United are one of the best clubs, yes," he told reporters. "But you never know. It could also be a different club, or who knows, I might stay here, in any case, I try to keep my feet on the ground. When teams like that come along, I think you've earned it.' He added: 'I certainly have enough confidence in myself. I think the most important thing is that my future team, whenever they arrive, has a plan in place. Ideally, that means playing immediately, but it's also possible I'll have to take a step in between. 'As long as there's a plan, it doesn't matter whether I'm ready for the next step or not. Everyone has their own career, their own path. Even if I don't take the right step right away, I'll get there. ‌ 'It could be within a few days, but also a few months or a year. I have people around me who help me with that, and that way I can focus on what I need to do.' Royal Antwerp manager Stef Wils won't stand in his way if United do come calling. 'He's proven why,' he said, referring to the transfer interest. 'He has everything a modern goalkeeper needs, and as a young lad, he still has room to grow in a major league. He exudes calm and inspires confidence in his defenders, a plus on high balls.'
