BTS' Jungkook apologises for wearing controversial hat during j-hope's concert rehearsal

Malay Mail14-06-2025
SEOUL, June 14 — BTS's Jungkook has issued an apology for wearing a controversial hat during a rehearsal for j-hope's encore concert.
According to Soompi, Jungkook attended the first night of j-hope's Hope On The Stage Final concert at Goyang Sports Complex. During the rehearsal, he was seen wearing a hat with the phrase 'Make Tokyo Great Again.'
The slogan, which resembles the phrase 'Make America Great Again' associated with US President Donald Trump, sparked controversy due to historical tensions between Korea and Japan, including Japan's colonial rule over Korea.
In the early hours of June 14, Jungkook posted an apology on Weverse.
He said: 'My heart feels heavy writing this kind of message after meeting you for the first time in a long while. I sincerely apologise for the disappointment and discomfort I caused many people through the phrase that was written on the hat I wore during today's rehearsal.
'There is no excuse, regardless of my reasons. I was lacking, and I was careless.'
He also stated that the hat had been immediately discarded.

China summons Nvidia over potential security risks in H20 AI chip

BEIJING, July 31 — China's cyberspace regulator said it has asked US semiconductor maker Nvidia to explain whether its H20 artificial intelligence chips have any backdoor security risks. The Cyberspace Administration of China said it met with Nvidia on Thursday after US lawmakers called for advanced chips sold abroad to be equipped with tracking and positioning functions. The regulator said the matter raised concerns over the potential impact on Chinese user data and privacy rights. Nvidia did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment. In May, US senator Tom Cotton introduced a bill that would direct the Commerce Department to require location verification mechanisms for AI chips subject to export restrictions, to curb Chinese access to advanced US semiconductor technology. The US this month reversed an April ban on Nvidia selling the H20 to China. Nvidia developed the H20 chip for the Chinese market after the US imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023. The chip has had a turbulent path to market amid shifting regulatory policies. — Reuters

As Malaysia grows older, PM says Putrajaya to review retirement age in 13MP

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Malaysia's mandatory retirement age of 60 will be reviewed with the possibility of being raised, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today as part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). While tabling the plan in Parliament, Anwar said the government aims to increase the participation of older adults and minority groups in the labour market. 'The mandatory retirement age will also be reviewed to align with the transition to an ageing nation,' he said in his speech. Malaysia last increased its retirement age in 2012, when it was raised to 60. There have been recent proposals to raise this further to 65. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said previously suggested that such a move would better reflect current realities, such as increased life expectancy and better health outcomes. However, the proposal has faced opposition from groups such as the Malaysian Youth Council, which has argued that the policy is not suitable for Malaysia's current labour market dynamics. The proposal comes as Malaysia faces a rapidly ageing society. A projection released earlier this month by the Department of Statistics Malaysia showed the country's median age is expected to rise significantly, from 32.8 years in 2030 to 40.7 years in 2060.

‘Made by Malaysia' economy to drive nation's ascent to top 30 global status by 2030 under 13MP, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Malaysia aims to rise as a leading Asian economy with its own identity rooted in Eastern culture and wisdom, ultimately becoming a high-income nation and one of the world's top 30 economies by 2030. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that to achieve this aspiration, the country must accelerate its transition to a value-creation-based economy and cultivate a culture of innovation. 'Malaysia must rise from being merely a consumer to becoming a leader in technology and a producer of world-class 'Made by Malaysia' products and services,' he said while presenting the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026-2030 in Parliament today. Anwar also emphasised the importance of strengthening the country's competitiveness by focusing on the development of local technology and digital transformation. 'Today, a generational opportunity in artificial intelligence (AI) is right before us and must not be missed. Malaysia has set a clear direction to lead the Southeast Asian economy in AI, digital technology, and the renewable energy industry, with the aspiration of emerging as a globally influential player,' he said. Anwar said the adoption of local technological innovation will be prioritised to stimulate economic growth, particularly through the development of strategic digital assets such as AI, data analytics, and digital government systems. 'This step is crucial to strengthening the nation's economic competitiveness, while also developing a more sustainable and high-impact industry in line with the ambition of becoming an AI-driven nation,' he added. Anwar further stated that to capitalise on this opportunity, the National AI Action Plan 2030 will serve as a catalyst for local talent development, research, and technology commercialisation to support the widespread adoption of AI. — Bernama
