Khayelitsha community rallies for justice in memory of Lolitha Kowa

In a display of solidarity, anti-gender-based violence organisations and local residents held a solemn motorcade through Khayelitsha on Thursday to honour 7-year-old Lolitha Kowa.
Her tragic rape and murder have ignited renewed outrage within the community. Kowa went missing on July 22, and her lifeless body was discovered the following morning, just 1.5 kilometres from her home in Kuyasa.
The horrific details reveal that she had been raped and murdered with a screwdriver.
Neighbours Odwa Jack and his partner Nokuthula Matyeseni have been arrested in connection with the crime.
They are expected to return to the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Friday as the bail process continues.

The memorial motorcade was organised by the anti-GBV organisation Ilitha Labantu, in partnership with Harare police and other violence prevention stakeholders.
The group lit candles and held prayers where Kowa's body was found in Nambuzane Street.
Ilitha Labantu spokesperson, Siyabulela Monakali, said the event formed part of their *#Uthuleleni* campaign, which aims to confront the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide.
'The sad reality, particularly here in 2025, is the growing trend of violence perpetrated against children by those entrusted with their care, mothers, fathers, caregivers,' said Monakali.
'This is an indication of the moral degeneration in our society. As an organisation that has advocated for the rights of women and children for over 36 years, we are saying: enough is enough. The Lolitha Kowa case is part of a broader pattern of violence against children in our communities. We cannot claim to be making any progress until children are free from all forms of violence and abuse.'
Amadoda Aqotho founder Lumkile Sizila said men must take accountability and lead in the fight against abuse.
'What they did was ruthless. The fact that she was murdered with a screwdriver shows this was a deliberate act. Khayelitsha is being seen nationally as a place where women and children are murdered — this must stop.'
Bishop Zamuxolo Mfihlo, who also joined the prayer service, condemned those who called for sympathy for the accused.
'We don't want them to come out. They might do the same thing to someone else's child. This is the third such case in recent months. We want the investigating officer to ensure a thorough investigation, and for the accused to spend the rest of their lives in jail.'

CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) took to the streets of Gugulethu on Saturday morning in a march against gender-based violence (GBV). The demonstration focused on the ongoing police DNA backlog, which the party said was delaying justice for GBV survivors. Joined by community members, the DA handed over a memorandum demanding urgent action to ensure the protection of GBV survivors. The DA's Siviwe Gwarube said the DNA backlog remains a serious barrier in the fight for justice. "In particular, the issue of DNA backlogs that continue to undermine efforts to put perpetrators of sexual violence against women behind bars." Gwarube added that the march not only highlighted the progress made in advancing women's rights but also called for stronger protections for women in today's society. "And so also, it's important to also note that this is an area that has also been besieged with a lot of violence and also just continues to be a high-risk area, particularly for women and children."

WATCH: DA marches on Germiston SAPS over GBV and crime crisis The Democratic Alliance (DA) staged a march to the Germiston SAPS on Friday, demanding increased resources to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) and crime across Ekurhuleni's police stations. According to crime statistics, Ekurhuleni recorded more than 1 600 murders in 2024, with precincts such as Primrose and Germiston ranking among the most dangerous in South Africa. Despite the crisis, many police stations in the district face severe staff and vehicle shortages, leaving GBV victims without adequate support. ALSO READ: WATCH: Delville residents protest over alleged police bias at Germiston station The march, led by DA Deputy Spokesperson on Police, Lisa Schickerling MP, wound through the Germiston CBD before stopping at the police station to hand over a memorandum of demands. 'Out of 1 154 police stations nationwide, only 134 have dedicated GBV desks. This means that most victims have no proper support,' said Schickerling. 'National government is failing to protect the people of Ekurhuleni. Communities are terrorised daily while SAPS remains understaffed, under-equipped, and overwhelmed.' The DA's memorandum calls for: Increased visible policing and crime prevention in hotspots. Fully operational vehicles and adequately staffed police stations. Strengthened GBV support services at all precincts. Transparent, quarterly crime statistics. A dedicated crime-reduction strategy for Ekurhuleni. Schickerling emphasised that without urgent intervention, the safety of residents will continue to deteriorate.

Father sentenced to life for raping son over two years

This week the Madadeni Regional Court sentenced the father who perpetrated the crimes at Madadeni, in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said the boy lived with both his parents and brother. 'The accused raped the complainant on diverse occasions when his mother was not around. At some point, the complainant, his mother, and his brother went to live with the mother's family. While living there, the accused would fetch the children and their mother for visits. During this time, the accused continued to rape the complainant. 'The matter eventually came to light when the complainant's teacher noticed a change in the child's behaviour and asked him what was going on. He then told her that his father had been raping him for some time. The teacher then informed the school principal and the complainant's family,' said Ramkisson-Kara. The boy was taken to a nearby clinic where the doctor confirmed his injuries. The matter was reported to the police, and the accused was arrested. 'In court, prosecutor Cindy Alberts presented the evidence of the first report, including the schoolteacher and the doctor who examined the complainant. The doctor told the court that the physical injuries sustained by the complainant due to the rape will have lifelong effects. 'In aggravation of the sentence, Alberts led the evidence of the complainant's aunt who told the court that since the incidents, the complainant has become withdrawn and unhappy and is afraid of the accused,' said Ramkisson-Kara. Reacting to the sentence, Ilitha Labantu's Siyabulela Monakali said they welcomed the punishment and commended the victim for speaking out. 'As an organisation that has worked for more than three decades to combat gender-based violence and violence against children, Ilitha Labantu remains deeply disturbed by the persistent reality of sexual abuse within family structures. We welcome the court's decision and regard this outcome as a step toward justice for the survivor and his family. We commend the courage of the child in speaking out, and the vigilance of the teacher who acted with care and urgency. These are the acts that interrupt silence and disrupt the cycle of abuse,' said Monakali. In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered that the accused's name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
