Tshwane police crackdown leads to 289 arrests and vital firearm recovery
Tshwane police have arrested 289 suspects and recovered a firearm during an intensified Operation Shanela crackdown.
The sweeping operation targeted crime-infested areas of Ekangala and Bronkhorstspruit, where police moved in to dismantle criminal networks and reinforce their presence in some of Tshwane's most troubled communities.
Captain Johan van Dyk confirmed that on May 17, a coordinated operation was carried out by SAPS, Home Affairs, Tshwane Metro Police, Gauteng Traffic units, and Community Policing Forums, targeting suspects for various offences with a specific focus on liquor compliance and the apprehension of wanted individuals.
Van Dyk reported that the arrests encompassed individuals accused of offenses including 75 suspects for gender-based violence, four for kidnapping, six for intimidation, four for attempted murder, 15 for assault with intent to inflict serious injury, and one for rape.
He added that a roadblock in Ekangala, along with mobile tactical teams throughout the area, resulted in the detention of 15 undocumented foreign nationals.
'These individuals are currently being processed by immigration authorities for deportation.'
Van Dyk highlighted that extensive stop-and-search efforts were conducted during the operation, which resulted in several drunk driving arrests and thousands of rands in traffic fines for various violations.
'During the operation, officers searched 508 individuals and 281 vehicles, which led to 27 arrests for driving under the influence,' said Van Dyk. 'Traffic officials also issued 81 AARTO infringement notices totalling R47 850 for road traffic offences,' he added.
Van Dyk added that officers targeted 11 known crime hotspots, resulting in 14 arrests and fines for public drinking. Alcohol was also confiscated during the operation.
'Liquor inspections were conducted at 20 establishments. As a result, three premises were closed, and 306,325 ml of alcohol was confiscated,' he said.
One suspect was taken into custody for possessing an unlicensed firearm, which had been reported stolen in Rietgat, and the suspect is being investigated for possible involvement in additional offences.
'We arrested one individual for possession of an unlicensed firearm that was previously reported stolen in Rietgat. The firearm will be sent for forensic testing to establish any links to other criminal activity.'

DA demands investigation into police corruption
In the Eastern Cape, 21 police officers were charged with corruption during the 2024/2025 financial year. Two of the alleged perpetrators are captains, and none have been convicted. The figure has prompted the DA to demand a full-scale investigation into systematic corruption within the police. On Thursday, DA MPL Yusuf Cassim revealed that dozens of SAPS members in the province had been the subjects of allegations of corruption and criminal cases. In response to a parliamentary question from Cassim, community safety MEC Xolile Nqatha confirmed that between 2021 and 2025, a total of 54 police officials were charged with corruption in the province. He said the province was facing a crisis in public confidence as corruption within the police continues to rise unchecked. 'Behind every statistic is a community left more vulnerable, and a resident left wondering whether they can trust the officers sworn to protect them. 'Officers who abuse their positions for personal gain compromise investigations and destroy lives.' Cassim said the DA believes that the rising tide of police corruption in the province demands urgent and uncompromising action. 'We demand a full-scale, independent investigation into systemic corruption within the police, and the immediate suspension of any officer facing criminal charges until their cases are resolved. 'Even more disturbing is that six officials found guilty in internal disciplinary processes have been allowed to return to duty. 'This includes two captains and a warrant officer. 'In multiple cases, the worst punishment officers received was suspension without pay.' During the 2024/2025 financial year, 10 disciplinary hearings were held, 10 were finalised, resulting in two dismissals and two service terminations. Out of the disciplinary hearings, six were found not guilty, while a further two were suspended without pay. In his response, Nqatha said between 2021 to 2025, a total of six police officers were allowed back into the force after being found guilty of corruption. Cassim said the DA would submit a formal complaint to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), requesting a full performance and consequence management audit of all corruption cases within the province since 2021. 'I will also write to the community safety portfolio committee chair, Tumeka Gaya, to request that the provincial commissioner appear before the legislature to account for this failure to uphold accountability within the ranks. 'The people of the Eastern Cape deserve a police service that is trustworthy, transparent, and professional. 'Restoring integrity within the police is a policy and moral imperative. 'Every citizen deserves to feel safe, not suspicious, when they see the blue lights of a patrol vehicle,' Cassim said.

This follows the brutal killings of Warrant Officer Vuyisile Sintwa and Sergeant Simon Masenya from the Johannesburg Trio Task Team, who were ambushed on August 8 while escorting awaiting-trial prisoner Jabulani Moyo from Roodepoort Magistrate's Court back to prison. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced two separate cash rewards of R150,000 each for information leading to the arrest of suspects responsible for the brutal killings of three police officers in two separate shootings over the weekend. The SAPS seeks help after the tragic murders of three officers in separate incidents over the weekend, underscoring rising violence against law enforcement in South Africa. 'It is standard procedure that all awaiting trial prisoners must be appropriately restrained and placed at the back of a van. On whether Moyo was handcuffed or not and why members were travelling in a sedan, all these questions are under investigation.' On August 9, Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni of Schoemansdal SAPS in Mpumalanga was fatally shot while responding to a burglary near Komatipoort. Police are currently searching for 10 suspects believed to be involved. Masemola paid a visit to the families of the fallen officers to express his condolences and provide support. He denounced the killings as a blatant assault on state authority and the rule of law. Masemola disclosed that 27 police officers were killed by criminals in the last financial year, with six officers already losing their lives in the line of duty since April 1, 2025. 'These are not just numbers; they were mothers and fathers who have left families behind to fend for themselves. Most of them were breadwinners in their households, but most importantly, they were members who dedicated and laid down their lives in the line of duty by ensuring that all people living in South Africa are safe and protected from callous criminals,' he said. Masemola also strongly urged all police officers across the country to be vigilant and not risk their lives while using the tools and resources provided to them. 'I am making this call again to all police officers in the country, do not die with the tools and resources that we have given you. The men and women in blue must act appropriately when circumstances allow them to act. Remember to always use force that is proportional to the threat. I plead with you, do not let your guard down, always be a step ahead of these criminals to ensure the safety and security of the people of this country,' he added. The Star [email protected]
