Kolkata: The format of the law entrance test is likely to be changed to bring back transparency in the entire process and stop the practice of excess admissions outside the merit list.
An examination agency from outside may be introduced for conducting the entrance test from this year.
The admission process for 14 law colleges affiliated with Calcutta University (CU), being conducted through the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET) by the dept of law, has come under scrutiny. The university is planning to involve an agency from outside to conduct the exam. Though admissions are made through entrance tests, many anomalies were reported in admissions, as several students with poor ranks gained entry to govt-aided colleges while students with good scores failed to gain admission.
These irregularities came to light after a rape incident at a law college in Kasba.
First-year admission has not been initiated as renewal for law courses by the Bar Council of India is pending because the required amount of Rs 35 lakh was not paid by the law department. It has been deposited on Thursday, said a source. The university expects to get the renewal from the Bar Council of India shortly, after which the admission will be initiated.

An official said that admission at law colleges under CU is conducted following the entrance test by the dept of law. "The only entrance test was being conducted by the department itself. University departments were never involved in the PG test to maintain its sanctity. How can a department conduct its own entrance test and publish merit lists on their own? This process needs to be revised."
The admission process will be initiated only after approval comes, and the university expects this to happen within a week.
Considering the number of anomalies reported regarding entrance tests, admission procedures, semester exams and irregular classes, the university has formed an advisory committee to look into the matter and regularise it.
It had its first meeting on Wednesday, where issues related to this matter were discussed. It was found that the law dept had become a hub of anomalies. Staff shortage is another major concern for the department, which led to a new law dean being appointed from the English department. Sources said the university is planning to initiate recruitment soon to resolve this issue. An official said, "It is not easy to change a system which has been running for years, but whatever complaints have been raised regarding academic issues have been noted and will be resolved soon.
Irregular classes and delayed results have become a practice that will be regularised gradually.

ED summons Anil Ambani in Rs 3,000-crore loan fraud case

A week after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out searches at over 35 locations in Mumbai linked to Anil Ambani, the central probe agency issued summons to the industrialist as part of a money laundering probe into an alleged Rs 3,000 crore bank loan fraud involving companies of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group. The ED is investigating allegations of illegal diversion of loans worth around Rs 3,000 crore, disbursed by Yes Bank to the group's companies between 2017 and 2019. It is also examining whether there was a quid pro quo involved in the loan — specifically, if bribes were paid to bank officials, including Yes Bank promoters. The central agency's probe has found alleged violations in Yes Bank's loan approvals to the group's companies, including backdated credit approval memorandums and proposals for investments made without any due diligence or credit analysis — violations of the bank's credit policy, among other issues. Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday summoned industrialist Anil Ambani on August 5 in loan fraud case amid probe over bribery, unsecured loans allegations, according to Economic Times. This comes days after the central probing agency conducted simultaneous raids in connection with an alleged money laundering case involving bank loan fraud worth Rs 3,000 crore against Reliance Group chairman Officials said that searches were done at over 35 locations in Mumbai, covering 50 companies and 25 individuals under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The searches at premises identified with industrialist Anil Ambani have huge financial implications for public money, Rs 20-30,000 crore, which the agency believes has been siphoned off, including outside the country, through "undisclosed foreign bank accounts and foreign assets" created over the years. A large chunk of the money came to Reliance ADAG from SBI and other public sector banks, besides Yes Bank, then a private entity, and mutual funds. Preliminary investigation has thrown up a mysterious entity: 'C Company'. The entity, whose existence was not known so far, is allegedly found to have been involved in related party transactions in this whole scam, sources said. (This is a developing story)

Lalit Maken, prominent trade union leader and Congress (I) MP from South Delhi, and his wife, Geentanjali, along with a visitor, Balkrishan Khanna, were shot dead in their Kirti Nagar house by two unidentified youths. A Congress (I) worker of the area, Suresh Malik, who used to drive Maken's car, was also shot in the shoulder. He is out of danger. The assailants, it appears, were aware of Maken's programme. 'Gas Leak Sabotage' The Union Carbide Corporation has ruled out everything but sabotage as the cause of last year's chemical disaster in Bhopal, the company lawyer, Bud G Holman, said. His comments went further than any previous statement by Union Carbide on the cause of the gas leak that reportedly killed 2,000 people and injured 2,00,000. A company spokesperson, Ed Vand Name Le, said later that the lawyer's statement should have been that the UCC has 'all but ruled out everything but sabotage'. He left open the possibility that the gas leak was accidental. The three have been detained on the basis of information collected from the five eye witnesses to the crime, he said. All three were residents of South Delhi, Marwah added.
