Ben Roethlisberger predicts Steelers will cut ties with preseason star
The Pittsburgh Steelers are getting set to take the field for their second preseason game, and several players are looking to parlay terrific Week 1 performances into another good outing in Week 2. One of those players is backup quarterback Skylar Thompson. The former Miami Dolphins quarterback threw three touchdown passes against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was one of the stars of the Week 1 slate. Speaking on Footbahlin, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sees the Steelers moving on from Thompson, as the three quarterbacks will all but certainly be Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, and Skylar Thompson. 'I think Skylar did a great job of protecting the ball, and I think it's going to earn him a spot on somebody else's roster,' Roethlisberger said. This lines up with what we discussed in our winners and losers piece following the Steelers' win over the Jaguars. Pittsburgh could even potentially get a draft pick in a trade if a team likes Thompson enough to be an upgrade over what they have, similar to how the New England Patriots received a Day Three draft pick for Joe Milton. The Steelers have even done a similar trade in the past, trading Josh Dobbs to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fifth-round pick. 2 Indiana football players named to preseason USA Today Sports All-America teams
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football's preseason honors list lengthened Wednesday, when two Hoosiers, linebacker Aiden Fisher and cornerback D'Angelo Ponds, were selected as second-team USA Today All-Americans. Their inclusion continues a trend — both Fisher and Ponds were selected to multiple postseason All-America teams following the 2024 season, and they are among the Hoosiers' most decorated players heading into the coming campaign. Fisher stands as the Big Ten's leading returning tackler, having posted 118 last fall. He finished 2024 with five games of double-digit tackles, and he boasts nine for his career. Ponds finished last season with 55 tackles, 12 passes defensed and three interceptions. He returned one of those for a touchdown against Washington. Ponds also blocked a kick on special teams. Panthers Defenseman Invited To Team USA's Olympic Orientation Camp
Florida Panthers defenseman Seth Jones has been invited to Team USA's Olympic orientation camp. The camp, scheduled for Aug. 26 and 27, is mainly for administrative and team-building purposes and does not feature any formal on-ice activity or public component. Earlier in August, Team Canada unveiled their orientation camp roster, which was headlined by five Panthers players: Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad, Brad Marchand, Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe. Jones is one of the newest Panthers, but his impressive track record goes beyond his time in Florida. Jones was the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, and has represented Team USA at the U-17s, U-18s, World Junior Championship and the World Championship. Jones won gold at the U-18s twice, the World Juniors once, while bringing home a silver medal at the U-17s and bronze at the World Championship. Jones is a minute muncher with good offensive instincts. He's a strong skater for a defenseman with a 6-foot-4 frame, but earning a spot on the American roster will be a challenge. The 30-year-old was left off the 4 Nations Face-Off roster and is one of the 16 defensemen invited to the orientation camp. The Americans don't lack talented offensive defenders, but require shutdown blueliners, something Jones could develop into this season.
