Is it safe to travel to Greece? Latest advice after wildfires spread rapidly

In a scorching, record-breaking summer, Greece continues to burn from rapid wildfires that are ravaging the mainland and its popular holiday islands. High temperatures, thick smoke and long-lasting embers provoked by strong winds have created life-threatening scenes that have led to evacuations of thousands of locals. With such a threat weighing in on summer holidays, it's no doubt that travellers are concerned about their holidays. That's why we've been keeping up to date on all the latest news regarding the wildfires across Europe. Here's what you need to know before you pack your bags. Where are the wildfires in Greece? The latest wildfires were reported Wednesday, and blazed through the outskirts of Patras, the country's third largest city, as well as the tourist islands of Chios and Zakynthos, and in at least other three inland locations. In the past month, fires have ravaged regions near Athens, Petralona, Atheras, Faraklata, and Protopappas, and continue to spread through the mainland and islands. Is it safe to travel? This really depends on your destination. If you had travel plans for Patras, fires have ripped through nearby olive groves, forests, a cement factory and an entire car yard of over 500 cars. According to Reuters, authorities have evacuated almost 8,000 people and continue to issue alerts for nearby villages. Flames in Chios have also forced the coast guard to evacuate locals to safety by boat, and the situation has gotten so now reached a point that Greece has requested EU water bombers to help about 5,000 firefighters tackle over 20 wildfires currently blazing across the country. What's the latest UK Foreign Office advice? Neither the UK or US government have made any official statements against travelling to Greece. The FCDO has also not made any special announcements, but it's always best to stay up to date with the local weather and travel advisories for your specific destination, and to ensure you take safety precautions in case you do stay in a destination with high-risk temperatures. You can find important general information on the UK Foreign Office's safety and security page that states that wildfires are a high risk in Greece from April to October. To get live updates and emergency alerts, travellers can register their mobile phones so they'll be warned of fire near their location. Travellers can also follow @112Greece for digital updates, and should call 112, Greece's emergency number, if they are in any immediate danger. You can also follow Greece's Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection via their official website or on Facebook. Can I get a refund if I choose not to travel because of wildfires? If your Greek getaway has been cut short by the wildfires and your travel provider hasn't offered a refund or voucher, it might be worth asking if you're entitled to compensation under the Package Travel Regulations. If you're already at your destination or if you're planning to cancel the trip altogether, some providers will let you change flights without extra fees, but don't expect to get all your money back. Get in touch with your provider and insurance to check your policies and what's possible before making any moves. What started the fires in Greece in 2025? The answer is simple: high-rising temperatures from climate change have affected Greece and the the rest of the planet, resulting in wildfires that will continue to spark during drier, hotter summers. The majority of wildfires begin as human error, but they are hard to get under control due to prolonged, 'tinder-box like' conditions. Where else in Europe has been affected by wildfires and heatwaves? Greece joins the likes of Spain, Portugal, Türkiye and the Balkans, all which have been battling violent blazes through the summer due to record-breaking heatwaves across southern Europe. Unfortunately, this is part of the 'new normal' as the global heat index continues to rise year to year from climate change.

Major airline cancels flights amid strikes with Scots airports facing disruption

Air Canada is preparing for a walk out by its cabin crew and has started to cancel flights More than 10,000 flight attendants are set to strike this weekend over 'poverty wages' and unpaid labour. Air Canada started to cancel flights today, Thursday, August 14, and predict a full shutdown on Saturday. ‌ Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow Airport could be affected on routes to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. It's been described by experts as "the most severe North American shutdown in decades", with 100 per cent of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge operations ceasing from Saturday morning ‌ The industrial action will disrupt between 18 and 28 flights from the UK daily, says AirAdvisor. The air passenger rights company said that it will impact up to 5,600 passengers who fly from the UK. ‌ Airports "bearing the brunt" of the upheaval will be London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh 'bearing the brunt'. There will also be secondary impact at Glasgow and Birmingham Airports. Edinburgh Airport sees a daily flight to Toronto Pearson Airport while Glasgow Airport has flights via codeshares or direct services. Glasgow Airport also offers flights to Montreal. The strike is unique in that it will lead to a total shutdown of airline operations. The action is also indefinite with no end date, fliers have been warned. AirAdvisor recommends passengers avoid flying to Canada until the issue is resolved or reroute via the US. Anton Radchenko, Aviation Expert & Founder of AirAdvisor, said: "This strike is a perfect storm for UK-Canada travel. Passengers aren't just losing flights, they're losing time, money, and in some cases, once-in-a-year holiday plans. ‌ "Air Canada's UK routes are some of the most premium in the transatlantic market, and a near-total shutdown sends shockwaves across both leisure and business travel. "The economic toll is immediate. Families heading to Canada for summer holidays or students travelling for the start of term are facing hundreds, even thousands, in unexpected expenses. "Business travellers, many of whom choose Air Canada for its reliability and premium cabins, will now have to contend with operational uncertainty that ripples across multiple continents." ‌ AirAdvisor said passengers with flights booked should act now. Anton said: " First, check your flight status daily and set alerts via your airline's app. If your booking is inflexible, look at refundable one-stop alternatives via New York, Boston, or Reykjavik before those options sell out. ‌ "Keep receipts for any out-of-pocket costs, from meals to hotels, as Canada's APPR rules require airlines to cover reasonable expenses for delays or cancellations within their control. He added: "If you must travel during the strike days, aim for early morning departures when disruption is typically lower, and avoid tight connections. For those who can, consider pushing non-essential trips by a week. "Not only will stress levels drop, but you may also save significantly on fares once the initial rebooking rush subsides.'

How to get a free upgrade to first class on a plane Travelers often wonder how to secure an upgrade to first class without paying the premium price. According to a flight attendant, there are several strategies passengers can employ to increase their chances. Firstly, loyalty to an airline is crucial; frequent flyers and those with elite status are more likely to receive upgrades. Additionally, booking directly with the airline rather than through third-party sites can improve your odds, as can being flexible with your travel dates and times. Dressing smartly and arriving early can also make a difference. While airlines generally prioritize upgrades based on status and fare class, a well-dressed passenger who checks in early may catch the staff's attention. It's also beneficial to be polite and friendly to the airline staff, as they have the discretion to upgrade passengers at their own judgment. Lastly, if you're celebrating a special occasion, such as a honeymoon or birthday, it doesn't hurt to mention it. While not guaranteed, some flight attendants might consider this when deciding on upgrades. Overall, while there's no surefire way to get a free upgrade, combining these strategies can certainly improve your chances. Recently, the 'Maldives of Europe' also got new flights from the UK for £19.99. Plus, Skyscanner has a price drop tool that finds the cheapest flights and it could save you hundreds.
