Jackson Cantwell, nation's top prospect, picks Miami over Georgia, Oregon, Ohio State
The nation's top prospect in the Class of 2026 has made a decision. Five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell out of Nixa (Mo.) High School is headed to Miami, he announced in a ceremony at his school Tuesday afternoon.
Cantwell, the highest-rated offensive lineman of the modern recruiting era, picked the Hurricanes over Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State. He always figured he'd play somewhere in the SEC or Big Ten, but has been adamant for the past several months that Miami would be in the mix. Now he's headed to Coral Gables, and coach Mario Cristobal — already known as a strong recruiter — has picked up arguably the biggest off-field win of his career.

'Miami excites me a lot because they have an offensive-line oriented coach in Mario Cristobal. I like coach Cristobal a lot,' Cantwell said in December at the Under Armour All-America Game festivities in Florida.
'I think coach (Alex) Mirabal is a top-five O-line coach in the country. He does a fantastic job. He's been great developing. They always seem to have the right guys on that offensive line.'
Cantwell originally planned to issue a commitment on April 30, but delayed his decision for a few weeks as he continued to search for clarity. He visited Oregon in late April and took a trip to Georgia last weekend, and coach Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs were believed to be the favorite.
But Cantwell, who is represented by Rosenhaus Sports, opted for Miami, which has been aggressive with its name, image and likeness offerings, both with transfers and high school recruits.
'He's dominated on the field since he was a ninth grader,' said John Perry, the head coach at Nixa High. 'From the first time I saw him when he was, I guess, in the seventh grade, a long, lengthy tight end, I thought, 'Eh, maybe.' And then I met Dad. I don't know if he remembers. I met Dad in a barbecue restaurant. And y'all know how parents are. They're like, 'Man my son's a big kid. Might be something one day.' And I'm like, 'Yeah, I've heard that a few times, right?' But as it turned out, he did turn out to be something and something really special. He has earned every single bit of this. He's done everything in the world to give himself the opportunity to be in this situation.'
Cantwell is Miami's first top-100 prospect and 10th overall commit in the 2026 class. He is the Canes' fourth offensive line commit, joining four-star tackle Ben Congdon, three-star tackle Joel Ervin and three-star interior lineman J.J. Sparks.

'I watched (Miami) play against Duke,' Cantwell said in December, describing what he thought of the Hurricanes. 'Cam Ward had all the time to do basically whatever he wanted in there. He was rolling around for like 30 seconds. So to be able to have a guy do that, you've got to be able to have good pass protection up front. And they do a fantastic job. So that excites me about Miami's development.'

Braves designate Craig Kimbrel for assignment after calling him up from minors for 1 appearance
Craig Kimbrel's reunion with the Atlanta Braves lasted one game. The veteran reliever was designated for assignment on Saturday, the team announced. Kimbrel, 37, appeared in Friday's 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants after being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett. Pitching the seventh inning, he allowed no runs with one hit, one walk and a strikeout. Kimbrel threw 14 pitches in total. The Braves signed Kimbrel to a minor league deal during spring training, but didn't make the major league roster. In 18 minor league appearances this season (15 for Gwinnett), he had a 2.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings with 8 walks and 9 hits allowed. Advertisement Kimbrel pitched the first five seasons of his career with the Braves, collecting a 1.43 ERA and 186 saves in 294 appearances. He won the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year award and made four All-Star teams during his stint with Atlanta. The Braves traded him to the San Diego Padres before the 2015 season and he's pitched for six other teams since then. Last season, he had a 5.33 ERA for the Baltimore Orioles in 57 appearances despite a strikeout rate of 12.6 per nine innings and was released in late September. Left-hander Austin Cox was called up from Gwinnett to take Kimbrel's place on the roster. In 19 minor league appearances, he compiled a 3.86 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings. He last pitched in the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. Atlanta lost in the 10th inning when Tyler Fitzgerald scored on a wild pitch by Pierce Johnson. The Braves have lost five consecutive games and holds fourth place in the National League East with a 27-35 record, 12 games behind the New York Mets.

Lindy's College Football preview magazine ranks Notre Dame football inside its top-10
Notre Dame will be favored in every one of its games this upcoming football season according to DraftKings Sportsbook, but one publication does not have the Fighting Irish in its College Football Playoff projections. Following a season in which the Irish set a program record for wins on their way to the national championship game, Lindy's Sports released its preseason college football preview magazine and ranked the Irish No. 6 nationally. Certainly a solid ranking, and the same spot Athlon Sports slotted the Irish in its preseason magazine, but Lindy's has Ohio State, LSU, Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Miami and SMU earning at-large CFP bids and not Notre Dame. Advertisement From the magazine: "We'll know early if Notre Dame's playoff expectation is warranted when the Irish play Miami, Texas A&M and Arkansas in the first four weeks. With only six players drafted, Notre Dame returns the wealth of a squad that was a few plays away from winning it all." - Lindy's Sports The Notre Dame defensive line and linebacker corps failed to make the Top 10 in Lindy's unit rankings, which is quite debatable. The magazine is also concerned about the quarterback situation, where either redshirt freshman CJ Carr or redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey will be taking the first snap in the season opener at Miami Labor Day weekend. Despite the playoff snub from Lindy's, though, it's clear that national college football observers are bullish on the Irish to remain a national contender in 2025 and beyond. Miami bounces back to defeat Louisville 9-6 and force Game 3 of their super regional
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Renzon Gonzalez drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, Daniel Cuvet added a three-run home run in the eighth and Miami defeated Louisville 9-6 on Saturday to even the Louisville Super Regional at a game apiece. In the seventh, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. doubled to lead off the inning and later scored the go-ahead run on a single by Renzo Gonzalez for a 6-5 Miami lead. Cuvet's one-out home run to left made it 9-5 in the eighth. Louisville scored a run in the ninth on a single by Lucas Moore and the Cardinals had runners on first and second with nobody out before Brian Walters retired the next three batters. Game 3 is set for Sunday with the winner advancing to the College World Series. Miami has 25 previous appearances in the CWS and Louisville has made it five times. Louisville took a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Zion Rose singled for one run and Eddie King Jr. belted a two-run home run. Jake Munroe, who hit two home runs in Louisville's 8-1 win on Friday, hit a solo shot in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Miami took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jake Kulikowski drove in a run with a single and Jake Ogden added a three-run home run. All four runs were unearned. King's solo home run in the seventh tied it at 5-all, then Gonzalez and Gonzalez came through for Miami in the bottom of the inning. Cuvet made it a four-run cushion in the eighth. Carson Fischer (5-1) pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run. Walters picked up his 11th save, allowing one run in two innings. Jack Brown (5-5) took the loss.
