Calgary police ask for help to identify sexual assault suspect in attack at hotel
The Calgary Police Service is requesting the public's help in identifying a man believed to have robbed and sexually assaulted a woman in a northeast hotel room.

On May 16 around 3 p.m., the suspect met with an unknown woman in a hotel located in the 100 block of Freeport Boulevard N.E., police say.

The suspect threatened the woman and brandished a knife, police said in a news release, and demanded cash, the victim's cellphone and access to the room safe. He then restrained the woman and sexually assaulted her multiple times before fleeing with cash and the victim's cellphone.

He is described as approximately 20 to 30 years old, between five feet eight and five feet 11 tall, weighing between 150 and 200 pounds, with a medium build, short black hair and black facial hair. He was last seen wearing a white Puma hoodie, blue or grey pants and grey running shoes.

Anyone with information about the identity of the suspect is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers online, by calling 1-800-222-8477 or by using the P3 Tips mobile app.

The system scans licence plates entering and leaving the Manitoulin District, capturing infrared and colour images at a rate of up to two plates per second. Designated officers with the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service can flag plates linked to serious investigations, including missing persons cases, homicides, Amber Alerts, human trafficking, drug trafficking and organized crime. 'It is important to clarify that this system is not to be primarily used to detect speeding violations or other offences under the Highway Traffic Act,' police said in a news release. Unflagged plates are automatically purged after seven days to comply with privacy laws. The initiative, which began May 30, was developed in consultation with Ontario's privacy commissioner and aims to enhance public safety and assist law enforcement agencies nationwide. Signage has been installed to notify the public of the ALPR's presence. In the release, police urged community members to report crimes anonymously through Crime Stoppers or directly to local police at 705-377-7135, saying the most effective way to protect the region is to share information. Northern Ont. man charged in historical child sexual abuse case
A 56-year-old man has been charged with sexual offences following a year-long investigation into historical allegations involving a child welfare agency worker. The Thunder Bay Police Service launched the investigation in 2024 after receiving reports of abuse dating back roughly 20 years. The accused, who was assigned to the victim's family at the time of the alleged offences, was arrested last month and appeared in court on May 28. The local man faces charges of sexual assault and sexual interference. 'The investigation remains ongoing, and police continue to examine the possibility that there are more victims who have yet to come forward,' police said in a news release.
