Pregnant woman's dad accuses spouse, kin of harassment
The father, veterinarian Chandrakant Lakshman Patil (55), filed a complaint with the Kupwad MIDC police on June 8, two days after his daughter, Rutuja Sukumar Rajage (29), died by suicide at her in-laws' house in Sangli district's Kupwad town.
The post-mortem report revealed that she was seven-month pregnant. In the FIR, the father said the marriage took place in 2021. "Her husband, Sukumar, is working in Merchant Navy as a second officer... Rutuja was being harassed for dowry off late," the father stated in the FIR.
Acting on the complaint, the police nabbed Sukumar, his father, Suresh Rajage, and mother Alaka on June 9, after which they were sent to two days of police custody. On Wednesday, they were sent in judicial remand. "Rujuta was harassed for dowry. We invoked Section 85 of BNS for abetment of suicide by dowry demand," assistant inspector Deepak Bhandwalkar of Kupwad MIDC police said.

Accountant of civic body held for funds embezzlement
Jharsuguda: Police on Tuesday arrested the accountant of Belpahar Municipality in Jharsuguda district in connection with alleged financial irregularities. Police identified the accused as Bibhuti Sahoo, 47, a resident of Puri. Executive officer of the municipality, Gourav Pradhan, had filed a complaint on Tuesday at Belpahar police station, alleging gross misappropriation of funds by Sahoo. Following the complaint, police registered a case under sections 316(5) and 3(5) of BNS. Murder accused injured in encounter
1 2 Bhubaneswar: A murder accused sustained bullet injuries in a police encounter near Khandual under Dhanupali in Sambalpur district in the early hours of Tuesday, a day after he and his brother allegedly murdered a youth and fled. Police said the accused, Md. Samad and his brother Md. Wasim of Motijharan under Dhanupali police station limits, allegedly stabbed Asfaq Khan around 10 pm on Monday following which a case was registered at Dhanupali police station under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) BNS on the written report of the victim's brother, Jabij Khan. A special police team was formed to nab the accused. Acting on intelligence inputs, the team traced Samad near Khandual. "On being challenged, the accused opened two rounds of fire at the police party. The team retaliated with controlled fire in which Samad sustained a bullet injury in his left leg below the knee," said police in a statement. The injured accused was immediately shifted to VIMSAR, Burla. Police have seized one 7.6 mm pistol and a black motorcycle from the accused. Police said Samad has criminal antecedents. 5 held for robbing gold ingot worth Rs 35L
Mangaluru: A joint team of CCB personnel and officers from the Mangaluru Central Sub-Division arrested five persons for allegedly abducting a jeweller by posing as customs officials and robbing him of a 350-gram gold ingot worth Rs 35 lakh. They will be produced before the court, and police will seek their custody for further investigation. Detailing the incident, the DCP said that Hari Bhanudas Thorat, who owns a jewellery shop in Kanhangad, Kerala, arrived in Mangaluru on Aug 13 for business purposes. Around 7am, while waiting for an autorickshaw near the Mangaluru Central Railway Station, about six men approached him in a car, allegedly impersonating as customs officers, and claimed they had information against him. The accused forcibly made him sit in the vehicle and drove him via the Udupi highway to Kumta in Uttara Kannada district, where they allegedly robbed him of the gold and later abandoned him near Antravalli in Sirsi taluk. Following his complaint, a zero FIR was registered at Kumta police station and subsequently transferred to Mangaluru South police station on jurisdictional grounds. A case was booked under Sections 310(2), 137(2), and 204 of the BNS. A special team formed by city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH used technical evidence and CCTV footage to identify and track down the accused. During interrogation, the arrested individuals reportedly confessed to the crime. Efforts are underway to recover the gold and seize the vehicle used for the offence. Police are also on the lookout for other accomplices involved in the case.
