MEA to highlight bipartisan approach to India-U.S. relationship to Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs on Aug. 11
U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of additional tariffs on India is a result of 'flawed assumptions' and New Delhi is being dragged into a geopolitical tug of war in which it does not intend to participate, officials of the Ministry of External Affairs are poised to tell the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs on Monday (August 11, 2025). The officials may also highlight the bipartisan nature of India-U.S. relationship and argue that ties prospered under 'both BJP and Congress-led governments'. The meeting of the Committee on External Affairs is being convened after the U.S. administration cited India's purchase of Russian oil as a trigger for additional 25% tariffs on top of the 25% 'reciprocal' tariffs announced before. In the meeting, the MEA team is expected to have a pragmatic approach to the latest challenges to the India-U.S. relationship and inform the Committee that despite the difficulties, India remains 'committed to engaging constructively' with the United States about the issues through 'dialogue and mutual respect'. 'Unilateral, punitive measures' It is learned that the Committee will be told that the U.S. decisions do not 'reflect the realities of global energy markets or India's sovereign choices' and that India considers the tariffs 'unilateral, punitive measures' that hurt global trade norms. The MEA team is expected to provide the Indian assessment of the motivation behind the actions of the U.S. President. The officials believe that the White House regards Russia's military campaign against Ukraine as an 'ongoing threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy' that requires 'strengthened measures'. Prior to the Executive Order signed by President Trump on August 6, 2025, India and the United States had been in negotiations for a 'fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement'. The MEA team is expected to tell the MPs in the Parliamentary Committee about what is perceived as 'double standards' in U.S. policy regarding trade with Russia. The Committee will also receive a detailed presentation of the historical nature of India-U.S. relationship with an emphasis on 'shared democratic values, open societies, converging strategic and economic interests and robust people to people ties'. The officials are likely to provide an overview of the 'bipartisan' nature of the relationship and how under both BJP- and Congress-led governments, the relationship has been nurtured and 'deepened'. Similar consensus between the Republicans and the Democrats in the U.S. are also expected to be in focus during the discussion. The Committee members are also likely to hear about the support President Trump has provided to India's core concern of cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, especially after the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. In this regard, President Trump's approval of extradition of 26/11 attack-linked Tahawwur Rana to India is also likely to be part of the presentation. A similar mention of the declaration of The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) and (Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) is also expected during discussions at the Committee meeting.

BRS blames Congress, BJP for urea shortage in Telangana
HYDERABAD Senior leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy has said farmers in the State are facing a serious crisis of urea shortage at a time when cultivation of Kharif crops has gained pace with rains over the last two weeks, as the State and Central governments are speaking in different tones on the issue. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said despite having eight MPs in Lok Sabha from Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was unable to supply urea in time. Instead of speaking on the Congress government, the BJP leaders were biding time on speaking against BRS and Union Minister Bandi Sanjay was unable to see the poor water level in Lower Manair Dam. However, the Congress government was not willing to switch on the Kannepally pump house to give water to the rain-deficit areas while huge quantities of water was flowing down BJP was also not interested in building pressure on the government to do so. The sole objective the two parties appears be defaming BRS come what may, he observed. While the Congress government was planning to harass its political opponents with the help of Kaleshwaram Commission report, the bickering in BJP had forced the party leadership to include Eatala Rajender's name in it, Mr. Venkata Ramana Reddy said and added that the two parties were making Kaleshwaram project defunct in the name of NDSA report. He also criticised the Congress government for its lack of sincerity in implementing 42% reservation to backward classes.

LoP Adhikari to hold convention against isolation of RG Kar rape and murder victim's parents
West Bengal Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and senior BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, on Sunday, has decided to organise a convention in the neighbourhood of the RG Kar rape and murder victim's parents to sensitise people against the alleged isolation of the elderly couple. The decision from the BJP leader came after learning that parents of the RG Kar victim have been isolated in their neighbourhood by members of the Trinamool Congress. LoP Adhikari alleged that the elderly couple have been isolated because they continue to demand justice for their deceased daughter and called for a "Nabanna Avijan" (March to the State Secretariat) on the anniversary of the RG Kar rape and murder incident. "We have come to know that the ruling party (Trinamool Congress) is behaving in this way towards the parents of the victim. I am in touch with the family. Despite our limited capacity, we are thinking of holding a convention against the injustice that Trinamool is doing to the victim's parents," the LoP said. LoP Adhikari, along with other BJP legislators, will organise these conventions to stand in solidarity with the victim's parents in such tumultous times. A BJP insider said on Sunday that such conventions will be held for two days. "Through this convention, LoP Adhikari wants to reach out to every household in the neighbourhood where the victim's parents live. Preparations have started to organise the event at the earliest. As part of the programme, BJP MLAs will hold meetings as well as conduct door-to-door campaign in the area and highlight the ruling party's treatment of the victim's parents," the party insider added. The BJP MLAs will also visit the markets where they can meet a large number of people. Apart from this, a leaflet mentioning the RG Kar Hospital incident and the role of the ruling Trinamool Congress in the incident will be distributed in the area. The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, took a dig at LoP Adhikari for planning to hold such convention. Trinamool Congress MLA and party's Chief Whip, Nirmal Ghosh, said, "Our party sympathises with the parents of the deceased doctor. It is not true that we have isolated them. It is true that sometimes they go to the BJP, sometimes to the CPM, sometimes to the Maoists. Since they have lost their daughter, I will not say anything about them. But I think there is no need for any convention as the area is peaceful." The RG Kar rape and murder victim's mother was discharged from the private hospital on Sunday afternoon where she was admitted following her injury during Saturday's "Nabanna Avijan". She had to be hospitalised after she fell ill amid police action against the protesters. The victim's mother alleged that she was beaten up by the policemen after she, along with her husband and other protesters, tried to march towards Nabanna (State Secretariat). The victim's mother and the BJP leaders alleged that in the police action, the sacred conch shell-bangle on her wrist, traditionally believed to be the symbolic representation of married Hindu women, was broken. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma said that they are examining the footage of the CCTV cameras and video footage to ascertain whether the victim's mother was beaten up or not.
