7 members of South American theft group arrested for Phoenix burglaries

Fox News26-05-2025

Seven members of a "South American Theft Group (SATG)" were arrested Friday for their involvement in two Phoenix-area burglaries, authorities said Saturday.
Both heists – one in Tempe and another in Mesa – were committed on May 23, the Scottsdale Police Department said.
All seven suspects were arrested on Friday at a short-term rental where they were staying, police said.
Scottsdale Police were alerted to the group on May 20 by the Burbank Police Department in California. They were warned about a SATG group from Colombia that had allegedly committed burglaries in California, Oregon and Washington, and were possibly headed to Arizona.
Among the stolen property in California was a French Bulldog, which will be given back to its owner, police said.
Authorities in California shared the group's vehicle descriptions and other information with Arizona authorities. Scottsdale detectives eventually tracked the suspects down to the short-term rental property, police said.
From May 20-22, authorities watched the group and followed them to the burglarized homes on May 23, police said.
"They observed all seven suspects coordinate and participate in burglary activity at both locations," a police statement said.
The suspects were identified as: Nicolas Rojas Leon, 23; Joan Sebastian Orozco-Vargas, 26; Andres David Sanchez-Novoa, 38; Natalia Isabella Ortiz-Daza, 26; Martha Juliana Echiverri-Guzman, 28; Lady Johanna Gueito, 32; and 25-year-old Angie Paola Herandez-Manrique.
Each suspect was ordered held in the Maricopa County Jail pending "numerous criminal charges" on $150,000 cash-only bonds.

Kaufman County Sheriff reveals details of around-the-clock manhunt for Trevor McEuen

How did accused murderer Trevor McEuen manage to evade law enforcement for nearly one month? CBS News Texas sat down with Kaufman County Sheriff Bryan Beavers on Tuesday to ask him about the arrest of McEuen and the manhunt. "We had checked every residence, everything that's in and around that area," Beavers said. "We have talked to them. Grandma somewhat worked with us, but she's told different stories." Authorities search for North Texas murder suspect who removed ankle monitor On May 5, McEuen cut off his ankle monitor before his jury trial was set to start. He was out on bond, accused of capital murder in the death of Aaron Martinez, who was shot and killed in May of 2023. Reporter Marissa Armas: A lot of people feel this response took too long, that the sheriff's office and other agencies didn't do their job? Kaufman County Sheriff's Office Beavers: I say, they don't know what we're doing behind the scenes. We had people working 24/7 around the clock with all these other agencies to try to do everything we can. McEuen caught at grandmother's home McEuen was found Monday hiding underneath his grandmother's home, east of Dallas. Beavers said they had previously checked the property. He said later they received intel that McEuen was still at the residence, so they got a warrant to search the home. "So, then we put a team on the ground inside, and that's when we found a hole in the closet that he had cut and got underneath the house," said Beavers. Kaufman County Sheriff's Office Armas: Do you think grandma knew? Beavers: In my opinion, I believe she knew 100%. Beaver said they're investigating to see who knew about his whereabouts and whether his family helped him. "We're still early in that investigation, and if we find out any of them are involved, we're going to file charges," Beavers said. "When you're trying to conceal somebody, you can do that pretty good, because you know we're coming. He didn't know what was coming that night, that's when we got the surprise on him." Beavers said they're trying to figure out what McEuen was doing in the days leading up to his arrest. He added that McEuen isn't cooperating with law enforcement. McEuen is being held without bond. His court date is set for August 4.

California-based gaming company operated as illegal gambling business, prosecutors say

Three people who California prosecutors say operated an illegal gambling business online have pleaded guilty in the case. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California and Arizona announced a plea deal Tuesday against SweepsCoach business operators James Mecham, Kurt Stocks and Heidi Edwards. As detailed by prosecutors, the El Dorado Hills-based SweepsCoach business helped set up gaming terminals at internet cafes across Arizona and California. The games played like video slot machines, with players buying credits to play for the chance of possibly winning more credits. The credits could then be exchanged for money at the cafes. Investigators conducted undercover surveillance at the cafes while they were in operation, confirming that SweepsCoach games were being played. In total, investigators found that Mecham, Stocks and Edwards had accumulated $14 million from their illegal gambling games from 2012-2017. Tuesday's plea deal comes after a joint investigation by the IRS, FBI, California Franchise Tax Board, and California Department of Justice Bureau of Gambling Control along with the U.S. Attorney's Office. Mecham, Stocks and Edwards aren't scheduled to be sentenced in the case until October. They all face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine each.
