Is Alberta headed towards a separation vote?
They're trying to drum up support for a petition and earn enough signatures to trigger a referendum on separation in 2026.
One of the reasons the petition is picking up steam is because Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party has just passed legislation that would lower the bar for holding a referendum vote.
Jason Markusoff is a producer and writer who covers Alberta politics for the CBC. He speaks to host Jayme Poisson about Smith's latest political moves, including the backlash, as well as the separatist movement itself.

(Sean Devine/Bluesky) Ottawa city councillors representing wards in the federal Nepean riding met with their local Member of Parliament this week, Prime Minister Mark Carney. Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine posted on social media to say he had lunch with Carney, alongside Barrhaven East Coun. Wilson Lo, Barrhaven West Coun. David Hill, and Nepean Liberal MPP Tyler Watt on Tuesday. ADVERTISEMENT Devine said they met to discuss local issues. 'My focus was on a bold opportunity for mass-scale, transit-oriented affordable housing, and safety issues related to oversized vehicles,' Devine wrote. A spokesperson from Hill's office told CTV News Ottawa that the group also discussed federal funding, a federal workspace in Barrhaven, the realignment of Greenbank Road, the issue of payment in lieu of taxes on federal properties, vehicle crime in the suburbs, and possible cricket pitches on NCC lands in Barrhaven. Carney was elected in April to represent the riding of Nepean, which includes sections of Devine's, Lo's, and Hill's wards. He does not yet have a constituency office in the riding, but his office said last week that staff were in the process of finding one that met the security needs of the prime minister. Carney previously sat down with Mayor Mark Sutcliffe to discuss local issues. The pair met after Carney became Liberal leader in March and again in June after the federal election.
