On3's Pete Nakos shares his intel regarding Notre Dame's quarterback competition
On Monday afternoon, On3's Pete Nakos took a look around the country at numerous quarterback battles, and clearly touched on Notre Dame's on-going battle (subscription required). He said that while the race is 'neck-and-neck' there is one that stands out due to his experience, albeit limited, in Kenny Minchey.
Nakos goes on to say that since Minchey has been in the program longer than CJ Carr his 'experience practicing in Mike Denbrock's system with Carr sidelined last year.. could prove to be a difference-maker when Marcus Freeman makes a decision.'
Neither of them have started a game at this level, and both of them have plenty of traits that you would look for in a quarterback. While all of us are clearly waiting on Freeman to make a decision, it makes plenty of sense for him to continue to have to two duel it out to see who comes out victorious. There is potential that both of them will play, but that system doesn't always work out well.
Hopefully, either Minchey or Carr separates themselves from the other, and Freeman can be comfortable with his choice.

Spartans bringing a better O-Line to the table this year per comment from position coach
Spartans assistant coach Jim Michalczik provided an optimistic report on his offensive line on Thursday One of the areas that could make or break the Spartans this year is the offensive line, and it sounds like things are looking pretty good there as we progress through fall preseason camp. The Spartans have a number of weapons at the skilled positions this year, but if you're offensive line isn't any good then it doesn't mean much. Good thing for Michigan State is that offensive line coach Jim Michalczik is confident in that bunch after the first few weeks of fall camp. He met with the local media on Thursday and expressed some strong confidence in his offensive line compared to the unit from a year ago, while noting there is still room for improvement as they approach the season. "We have a bunch of dudes that can play," Michalczik said during his media availability. "The fun thing with this camp is that every day the bar just got higher. Every day we have improved, (but) I still think we have a lot of improvement to go... We are so much further advanced in understanding the offense, understanding football. We are talking about things we never talked about last year. We have so much more of the offense in now so (I'm) optimistic, yeah, but still have a lot more work to do." Michalczik added that a number of starting spots are still up for grabs, and that they should get some decisions made out of Saturday's second fall camp scrimmage. This goes in line with a comment from head coach Jonathan Smith earlier this week where he stated there's roughly 10 guys in the mix for a starting spot after the first two weeks of fall camp. Michigan State has a few more weeks of fall camp remaining before they open the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Spartans are bowling in preseason CBS Sports projections
See where Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has the Spartans landing in his preseason bowl projections Michigan State football is heading right down the road for its first bowl game in four years. Or at least that's how Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has it in his preseason bowl projections. Crawford released his preseason bowl projections for the upcoming season on Thursday, with the Spartans making the cut. He has Michigan State landing in the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit in his opening projections for this season. The Spartans are projected to play the Toledo Rockets out of the Mid-American Conference. The GameAbove Sports Bowl is played at Ford Field in Detroit on December 26. Ironically, if this projection were to play out, it would be two straight games at Ford Field to end the 2025 season for the Spartans as their regular season finale against Maryland is also set to be played there on November 29. Michigan State finished 5-7 last year in head coach Jonathan Smith's first year leading the Spartans. Michigan State last reached the postseason in 2021 when they beat Pitt in the Peach Bowl. Michigan State has a win total over/under of 5.5 entering the season, so landing in the GameAbove Sports Bowl is right about in line with the betting odds for them this year. Hopefully, Michigan State is able to play above that and end up in a higher level bowl game but I also wouldn't hate the opportunity for the Spartans to play in a bowl game in their own backyard if it worked out that way. Michigan State opens the 2025 season on August 29 in a home game against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on FS1. Steelers' Mike Tomlin wants Kaleb Johnson to trust himself more ahead of preseason Week 2
The pressure and noise surrounding Steelers rookie RB Kaleb Johnson has skyrocketed throughout the week — and HC Mike Tomlin shared his own take on the third-rounder's development. Like any rookie making their NFL debut, Johnson's performance in the Steelers' preseason opener was filled with ups and downs — and while many critics have been laser-focused on the negatives over the past week, Tomlin revealed the changes he expects heading into preseason Week 2. "I just want to see [Kaleb Johnson] trust himself more," Tomlin told reporters on Thursday. "I want to see him play more instinctively, trust his talents. And that's reasonable to expect between the first experience and the second experience.' Finding and hitting open lanes was arguably Johnson's strongest quality coming out of college — but it may take more adapting to NFL speed before the rookie running back can replicate his success at Iowa.
