Olympic 100 champion Noah Lyles calls off weekend race with Miami's Tyreek Hill for personal reasons
A race between Olympic 100-meter champion Noah Lyles and Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill that was never formally announced but supposedly taking place this weekend was called off by Lyles for 'personal reasons.'
Lyles announced the cancelation Tuesday at Stagwell's Sport Beach event in Cannes, France. His news was captured in a video posted
by the New York Post
on Instagram.
This postponement followed months of trash talk between the two sports stars. Lyles said in his chat at the Cannes event Tuesday the showdown with Hill was going to take place in Times Square.
'Unfortunately, there were some things — complications, personal reasons, that it just didn't come to pass, but we were full in,' Lyles said in the video. 'We were going to have a big event.'
Hill posted
on social media
a series of pictures with Lyles' face on Homer Simpson's animated character as Simpson retreated into the hedges. Hill also wrote: '
@LylesNoah
after seeing me run the 100m last weekend.' The 31-year-old Hill ran 10.15 seconds in a race last Friday in California. He held up a sign that read '
Noah Could Never
.'
It was in response to the 27-year-old Lyles flashing a piece of paper that said 'Tyreek Could Never' after winning a 60-meter indoor race in February.
Lyles captured Olympic 100-meter gold in Paris last summer in a time that calculated out to 9.784 seconds. It was five-thousandths of a second faster than Kishane Thompson of Jamaica.
As Lyles explained it, a race for bragging rights that was never formally announced was on track to possibly take place as soon as this weekend.
'It was going to be a lot of fun,' Lyles said in the video.

Tyreek Hill chides Noah Lyles after their 100m race canceled for ‘personal reasons'
Somebody between Tyreek Hill and Noah Lyles has to be ducking the other — and Hill is suggesting that it's not him. On Monday, the sprinter Lyles revealed that his 100-meter foot race against the NFL star Hill was supposedly meant to happen this past weekend in Times Square, but 'complications' and 'personal reasons' caused it to fall through. Then, with a recent post on X, Hill made it known that it's not 'complications' on his end that canceled it, and that it was Lyles who backed out at the last minute. 'We were very deep into creating the event. In fact, it was supposed to happen this weekend,' Lyles said Monday. 'We were gonna have a big event, we were going to shut down New York Times Square and everything, we were gonna have all the billboards for the event, it was going to be a lot of fun.' But still, the event fell through. Both Tyreek Hill and Noah Lyles have claimed they can beat the other in a foot race, yet the official faceoff continues to fall through. The Dolphins wide receiver ran a 10.15 100-meter dash on Friday, then held up a sign that read, 'Noah could never.' Tyreek Hill may be the NFLs fastest player. AP Lyles, however, ran a 9.784 in the 100-meter at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. So, seemingly, he should have no reason to avoid racing Hill. But even while the numbers suggest that he would lose, Hill has shown to the public that he's fully invested (and confident) to race Lyles. Noah Lyles is often coined the world's fastest man. AFP via Getty Images Lyles, who won gold at the 2024 Olympics in the 100-meter sprint, also competes in the 60-meter and the 200-meter. He is widely regarded as the fastest man in the world. As for Hill, he may be the fastest player in the NFL and may very well also be one of the fastest humans on earth — but it's unclear if his football speed could really keep up with Lyles. Though it feels like the race may never happen at this point, Lyles has been adamant in the past that it's no joke. And if Hill's trash talk is legitimate, then it sounds like he's ready to go too.

Hockey Canada GM Explains Brad Marchand Snub on Initial Olympic Roster
Hockey Canada GM Explains Brad Marchand Snub on Initial Olympic Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Florida Panthers veteran Brad Marchand's name wasn't among the first six players named to Team Canada's Olympic roster on Monday. Advertisement The first Canadian squad includes Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Brayden Point, Cale Makar, and Marchand's teammate Sam Reinhart. General manager Doug Armstrong addressed the decision directly, calling it one of the toughest choices in the early selection process, although leaving the door open for his eventual addition. The 37-year-old winger was part of the original First Six projected during last year's 4 Nations lead-up, but fellow Panthers forward Reinhart ultimately took the one 'open' slot over the older Marchand. Armstrong made it clear that Marchand wasn't cut due to a lack of performance, especially noting his strong playoff showing this spring, as he's scored 20 points in 22 postseason games through Monday's announcement. Advertisement 'I had a good chat with Brad,' Armstrong said. 'He's certainly a candidate to make this team. What he did for our team at the 4 Nations — the character and the ability to bring the team together — plus what he's done in the playoffs here, it's very inspiring.' Armstrong said age and physical shape factored into the choice. Team Canada forward Brad Marchand (63) during the 4 Nations Face-Off. Winslow Townson-Imagn Images Reinhart's combination of consistency, two-way play, and postseason pedigree pushed him over Marchand and other possible options. 'What we saw at the 4 Nations: Sam is just a well-balanced player who can touch every aspect of our team,' Armstrong said. 'There was no question he was going to be on our team. He was just a natural selection now based on his play and his history of great play in big events.' Advertisement Reinhart, who finished the regular season with 81 points in 79 games, has scored 11 points in 14 postseason outings. Former wrestling champion Ben Askren may need lung transplant, wife says
Former Missouri NCAA Division 1 champion wrestler and UFC fighter Ben Askren is being evaluated for a lung transplant, his wife revealed Tuesday, after he was hospitalized with severe pneumonia. File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI | License Photo June 17 (UPI) -- Former UFC fighter and wrestling champion Ben Askren is in the process of being evaluated for a possible lung transplant, his wife revealed Tuesday, as he is "still fighting" for his life. Askren, 40, was hospitalized in critical condition earlier this month in Wisconsin with a severe case of pneumonia, caused by a staph infection. He is currently sedated on a ventilator and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). "I haven't shared an update because Ben has been in limbo for a while and I was hoping to have him wake up and be the one to decide what to share," Amy Askren wrote Tuesday on Facebook. "Ben is still on a ventilator and ecmo to support him while he heals. There are good days and bad, but on the good, they have been able to wean his sedation enough for him to open his eyes and squeeze hands," his wife added. "His body can't handle coming off sedation too much yet. I'm still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for lung transplant," she said. "I know transplants are such a blessing and I'm overwhelmed at the thought of him receiving a gift like that. No one would take better care of that gift than Ben." Askren retired from MMA in 2019, but returned for a boxing bout vs. Jake Paul in 2021. He was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team and was a two-time NCAA Division I champion in wrestling. "Ben is the healthiest guy I know and I never could have expected this," his wife added. "Please pray for his continued healing, and if transplant is the solution, that he can get on the list quickly and easily." Athletes, wrestlers and the UFC have offered their thoughts, as Askren remains hospitalized, and prayers as he undergoes evaluation for a lung transplant. "We here at the UFC certainly join in sending all our support to Ben, his wife Amy and their kids as they stay strong through this difficult fight."
