British Airways pilot suspended for ‘anti-terror law' violation; he kept cockpit door open throughout flight

Minta day ago
A British Airways pilot embroiled himself in trouble after leaving the cockpit door of a Heathrow to New York flight open throughout the journey, leading to his suspension. The pilot, whose identity remains anonymous, allegedly wanted his family seated in the passenger section to see him operate the controls.
Since the 9/11 attacks, cockpit doors are required to remain locked during flights to minimise the risk of terrorism and hijacking. By breaching this protocol, the pilot was suspended for 'breaching anti-terror laws.'
The incident reportedly caused alarm among both passengers and staff. 'Crew and passengers immediately noticed the cockpit door was open and wanted to know what was happening. It made passengers incredibly uneasy,' a source told The Sun.
'The door was wide open for a significant time — enough for people to worry and comment. BA colleagues were so alarmed that the pilot was reported in the US and bosses had to suspend him,' the source added.
With the pilot grounded, the return service from New York to London — scheduled to arrive in the UK capital on August 8 — was cancelled. British Airways arranged alternative travel for passengers booked on the flight.
A video of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 striking multiple deer while landing at Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport went viral on social media last month, prompting an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The incident occurred as the aircraft descended onto the runway, where several deer were wandering across the tarmac. The clip, widely shared on X, ended with the plane coming to a halt after hitting more than two deer.
According to CNN, citing LiveATC.net, the pilots had reported the animals before landing and warned air traffic control, saying, 'There is deer on the runway.' The tower asked for their location, to which the pilot replied, 'The intersection.' Despite the warning, the plane struck the deer, causing damage to its main landing gear. A spokesperson for the airport confirmed that repairs were required in Kodiak, leading to flight cancellations. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

Air India Express Bengaluru–Gwalior Flight Has Close Shave During Landing, All Passengers Safe

Air India Express said the pilot performed a precautionary go-around before a safe landing. Air India Express said a Bengaluru–Gwalior flight landed 'safely and uneventfully" on Saturday after performing a go-around at Gwalior Airport, but some passengers reportedly claimed the aircraft tilted to one side and shook violently during the first landing attempt. According to those onboard, as per reports, the Boeing 737 descended at an unusually high speed on its second approach, causing panic among the 150 passengers, with some screaming in fear. Eyewitnesses alleged a possible technical issue with the aircraft, though the airline maintained there were 'no issues" and that the crew's actions were precautionary. The flight, which arrived around 4 pm, continued its schedule after landing. In an official statement, an Air India Express spokesperson said, 'One of our aircraft performed a go-around followed by a safe and uneventful landing at Gwalior. Our crew is trained to carry out a go-around as a precautionary measure when required. The aircraft subsequently operated as scheduled." view comments First Published: August 16, 2025, 22:35 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Alarming': British Airways pilot left cockpit door open mid-flight for family; grounded

Representative AI image A British Airways pilot was reportedly suspended after he left the aircraft's cockpit door open while operating a Heathrow (LHR) to New York, John F. Kennedy (JFK) flight, reported the Sun. The pilot allegedly wanted his family, who were travelling as passengers, to watch him at the controls, an incident that alarmed some travellers and led crew members to file a report with the airline. As a result, the return flight BA174, scheduled to arrive in London last Friday, was cancelled, disrupting travel plans for hundreds of passengers aboard the twin-engine Boeing 777-300. Since the September 2001 9/11 attacks, when terrorists hijacked US passenger planes and crashed them into skyscrapers in New York City, security measures have tightened, requiring pilots to keep cockpit doors locked. This is done to prevent unauthorised access. 'Crew and passengers immediately noticed the cockpit door was open and wanted to know what was happening. It made passengers incredibly uneasy,' a source was quoted as saying by the Sun. 'The door was wide open for a significant time, enough for people to worry and comment,' the source said, adding that "BA colleagues were so alarmed that the pilot was reported in the US and bosses had to suspend him.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Sources at British Airways stated that the pilot's suspension was consistent with company policy. After a formal investigation, the airline determined there was no security risk, and the pilot has since resumed active duty, as per Aviation A2Z. A British Airways spokesperson emphasised that safety and security are the airline's top priorities and that all such claims are thoroughly examined.

British Airways Pilot Leaves Cockpit Door Open So His Family Could See Him, Suspended

The cancellation affected hundreds of passengers though British Airways arranged alternative flights. A British Airways pilot was briefly suspended after he allegedly broke strict aviation security rules by leaving the cockpit door open during a transatlantic flight. The incident caused concern among passengers and disruption to schedules. According to a report by The Sun, the pilot wanted his family, who were travelling on the same flight, to see him operating the aircraft. His actions alarmed crew members and some passengers, who immediately noticed the door was open. He was then removed from duty and the flight was cancelled. Flight Disruption After Security Breach As per the report, BA174 from New York to London, scheduled to land on 8 August, was cancelled after the pilot was suspended. The flight was due to be operated by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The cancellation affected hundreds of passengers though British Airways arranged alternative flights. Most travellers reportedly reached London within four hours of their original schedule. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirmed that an urgent investigation was launched into the matter. Since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, airlines have followed strict rules requiring cockpit doors to remain locked at all times during flight. 'Crew and passengers immediately noticed the cockpit door was open and wanted to know what was happening. It made passengers incredibly uneasy. The door was wide open for a significant time — enough for people to worry and comment. BA colleagues were so alarmed that the pilot was reported in the US and bosses had to suspend him," a source told the outlet. The airline later said that a full investigation was carried out. It concluded that there was no security threat and the pilot has since returned to duty. In a statement, British Airways said that safety and security are the airline's highest priorities. 'Safety and security is our top priority and allegations of this nature are always fully investigated," a British Airways spokesperson said as quoted by The Independent. Separate Incident Involving easyJet Earlier this week, a separate case involving easyJet also made headlines. A captain who was scheduled to operate a flight from Cape Verde's Amílcar Cabral International Airport to London Gatwick was suspended after being spotted drunk and naked at a luxury hotel. The pilot was staying at the five-star Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa on 4 August. Witnesses claimed he stripped off his clothes at 2:30 AM and walked through the reception area before entering the gym and spa. Some guests, who also happened to be easyJet passengers, recognised him and reported the matter. The airline confirmed that another pilot replaced him for the 6 August flight. view comments First Published: News viral British Airways Pilot Leaves Cockpit Door Open So His Family Could See Him, Suspended Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
