Queensland's Origin win biggest streaming event in Australian history

It was the epic State of Origin decider that felt as if it were decided before half-time, yet Queensland's 24-12 game-three victory over NSW still drew an enormous audience.
The game had an average national TV audience of more than 3.9 million people, according to figures released on Thursday morning by ratings company OzTAM. That made it the most-watched program of 2025.

Grafton preview, best bets, inside mail for Sunday, July 13, 2025

Trainer Scott Singleton was a little surprised when he saw the field for the South Grafton Cup but an inside draw for Fiorsum Fred give him hope the gelding can run a cheeky race. Headlining the South Grafton Cup (1600m) is last start Listed Civic Stakes winner Headley Grange along with Listed Tatt's Mile runner-up Sibaaq and Big Dance runner-up Vivy Air. 'It has ended up a bit stronger race than I thought but the Big Eligibility gets them there but you have to be in it to win it,' Singleton said. 'He is down in the weights and has drawn well so we will see how we go.' Fiorsum Fred has 54kg while Headley Grange has top weight of 62kg, Sibaaq has 61kg and Vivy Air has 59kg The four-year-old drew barrier 5 but moved in one gate with the early scratching of Uzziah while those three rivals have drawn out on barriers 10, 8 and 13 respectively. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'It's a good draw for him because he's got enough speed to be handy so hopefully he will be just behind them with cover,' said Singleton. 'He will need the favourites to have a bit of luck go against them but he can bob up on his day and I wouldn't completely rule him out of it.' Fiorsum Fred is no stranger to Grafton after finishing runner-up to Rapt in the Guineas last year. The son of Fiorente heads back this weekend in better shape than his form may appear according to Singleton. 'That should have been a '1' next to his name last start at Tamworth,' he said. 'He just never got a clear crack at them at all in the straight and went to the line full of running. 'I would take him if he wasn't in really good order.' Joining Fiorsum Fred on the trip from Scone is Beyond My Ken in the Class 1 Handicap (1006m) and Another Peach in the Maiden Plate (1410m). Beyond My Ken showed good ability with a debut win from Manuscript and Fingers Hunter at Scone in March last year before a last to Linebacker in the Group 3 Baillieu at Rosehill. Hen then placed third at Muswellbrook in his only run last spring before returning with two seventh placings at Scone. 'His form doesn't read as good as this horse is,' Singleton said. 'Since his first start when he won, everything has gone wrong. 'He pulled up lame at his next start at Rosehill and has had issue after issue since then. 'I've finally got him in the shape he was when he won on debut. 'He's finally drawn a good barrier too. 'I'm going there pretty confident that he is ready to do something. He's the one I'm most confident about.' Another Peach showed handy ability in her first campaign with placings in three of her four starts. She returned this preparation with a neck second to Kobold at Mudgee on July 6. 'It was a really sticky track and she just couldn't get away from them at the top of the straight,' said Singleton. 'Had it been a little bit drier, she probably wins but she stuck to her task well though. 'She pulled up unbelievably well and I'm confident she has come on a little bit which will have her right in the mix. 'While she has drawn out a little, the fact that her main dangers have drawn wider gives her a chance to roll across while they are covering a bit of ground which may be the difference in the end.' NSW chiefs make call on Laurie Daley's coaching future after State of Origin disaster

Laurie Daley will remain the NSW Blues coach next year despite calls for him to be axed after Wednesday's 24-12 defeat saw the Origin shield head north. NSW has already had three coaches in three years – Brad Fittler, Michael Maguire and Daley – yet after losing the unlosable series, Blues fans were calling for the coach's head. But according to Code Sports, that won't be happening, with NSWRL chief executive Dave Trodden confirming his job is safe. 'Laurie is contracted for next year and we don't break contracts,' Trodden said. 'He was devastated after the game and we're all disappointed. 'But you don't achieve sustained success by constantly chopping and changing your coach. You settle on a plan, put processes in place and stick to it. That's what we'll be doing.' Daley stepped back into the Origin arena following an eight-year absence for the 2025 campaign. But he was once again thoroughly outcoached. The 55-year-old has now won just one of six series in charge and on each occasion has shown he is not willing to forego loyalty to make the hard call. Keeping the same 17 for the third and deciding game blew up in his face and backed up the theory that he is simply too nice and too loyal to succeed as a coach at Origin level. Michael Maguire shook things up last year and it led to immediate success. While this year Maroons coach Billy Slater found himself under pressure for the first time, after his side were comprehensively beaten at their Suncorp fortress. So what did he do? He pulled the trigger on several tough selection calls. The decision to drop captain Daly Cherry-Evans and bring in Tom Dearden at halfback after Game 1, is a call if roles were reversed Daley simply wouldn't have made. While he also resisted the temptation to replace the injured Kalyn Ponga with Reece Walsh, instead opting for the more consistent and reliable Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, an inspired decision. Daley on the other hand overlooked two form props in May and Koloamatangi, for King and Utoikamanu. So with Daley back at the helm in 2026, fans will undoubtedly hope he has learned from it. He will also be joined again next year by Storm coach Craig Bellamy and Melbourne's general manager of football Frank Ponissi.

Qld Origin forward Josh Kerr sanctioned over ‘detrimental' post-game comments

Queensland forward Josh Kerr has been sanctioned by the NRL after comments he made about referee Ashley Klein following the State of Origin series decider. The 29-year-old, who was 20th man for the Maroons in their 24-12 win, spoke the morning after the win and said 'the game's rorted', and referred to Klein as a 'double agent'. Dolphins prop Kerr, who likes to crack jokes, had his tongue in cheek with the comments, but they were not well received by the NRL. NSW won the penalty count 7-3 after the Maroons had led that statistic 10-2 in their 26-24 win in game two. On Saturday, the NRL issued Kerr with a breach notice alleging a breach of the NRL Code of Conduct. 'The comments are considered detrimental to the best interests of the game and also serve to undermine the credibility of match officials,' the NRL said in a statement. Kerr, in the afterglow of the 2-1 series win, was interviewed by reporters early on Thursday morning after the Maroons celebrated their victory. 'I'm not sure how much trouble I could get into for saying it, but I thought Ash Klein did a bit to try and ... even it up or make it a bit closer,' Kerr said. 'We were sitting there (on the bench) going, 'it's rorted, the game's rorted'. 'I haven't got the best eyesight at times, but I'm watching forward passes and s***. We were all on the sideline going, 'oh no, it's a double agent'. 'It makes it more exciting, doesn't it, and it brings out the Queenslander in all those players.' Kerr has until Friday to respond to the breach notice.
