NFL rookie Travis Hunter's dad gets ruling on 'special treatment' from judge after gun and drug convictions
Palm Beach County's Honorable Howard Coates Jr. has denied the elder Hunter's request to modify the remainder of his sentence on gun and drug charges. Currently on community control supervision, a highly monitored form of probation, Hunter Sr. recently asked for more freedom so he can mentor his son as he begins his NFL career four hours north in Jacksonville.
Hunter Sr. previously secured permission to attend last month's NFL Draft in Green Bay, where Hunter Jr. went second overall to the Jaguars following a pick swap with the Cleveland Browns.
However, Coates sees the father's latest request as a step too far, as he told Hunter Sr.'s attorney, Bradford Cohen.
'I hear these circumstances have changed, you know, my hat's off to his son,' Coates said, as quoted by USA Today. 'I don't know that changes the father's situation for me. In fact, it's given me some concern that you're almost arguing for special treatment.'
Cohen rejected Coates' claim that the request amounted to a call for special treatment, but the Judge continued to disagree.
'So say you, but probably 99 percent of the public out there that doesn't have an athlete son who's incredibly successful, might look at this and say: 'This sounds like special treatment for the athlete's father,' he said.
Coates previously helped secure a pardon from President Donald Trump for rapper Lil Wayne on a 2021 gun charge. Lil Wayne is also happens to be a friend of Colorado football coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders, who coached Hunter in Boulder and at Jackson State.
Furthermore, Hunter Jr. is represented by agent Adie Van Gontard, who has co-founded an agency with Lil Wayne.
Hunter Sr. was arrested in November of 2023 after police in Lantana, Florida pulled him over because his license plate wasn't illuminated, according to court records.
Not only was Hunter Sr. found to be driving without a license, but a subsequent search allegedly revealed drugs and a loaded pistol.
He was charged with illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon following a previous conviction for allegedly selling heroin. Hunter Sr. reached a plea deal in 2024 that reduced his prison sentence to 90 days, with three years' probation.
A cornerback and wide receiver, who could end up playing both positions in the NFL, Hunter is engaged to Leanna Lenee and the couple plans to wed later this month in Tennessee.
Hunter Jr. has recently been praised over an encounter with a woman aboard a United Airlines flight.
Sandy Hawkins Combs was flying home from Denver when she happened to be seated next to Hunter, whom she admittedly did not know.
As Combs detailed in a Facebook post, the 'polite' Hunter offered to help her with her bag and called her 'ma'am.'
'Anyone would be proud to have him as a son or grandson - so polite,' she wrote.
However, it wasn't until other passengers starting greeting him and taking pictures that Combs realized she was sitting next to someone famous.
'I turned and asked him, 'Who am I sitting next to?' I looked at his Jaguar pants, smiled, and asked, 'Are you an athlete?' He smiled and said, 'I'm Travis. Yes, I was drafted by the Jags.' I already told my sons I want his jersey,' she wrote.
'He's so humble and down-to-earth—I would have never guessed he was a professional athlete. JACKSONVILLE JAGS, you did good! I will be buying tickets.'
The post was then publicized on X by reporter Travis Holmes, leading to widespread praise of Hunter Jr..
'Just seems like a great kid,' one fan said.

Inter Miami F Lionel Messi (leg) ruled out for Sunday
August 9 - Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi will not travel for Sunday's match at Orlando City due to a "minor" muscle injury in his right leg, coach Javier Mascherano said Saturday. Messi sustained the injury during last weekend's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa. There is no timeline for the forward's return. "No, Leo will not be available tomorrow," Mascherano said Saturday, per ESPN. "Leo is OK, but obviously it would be crazy to take the risk of taking him to Orlando because of all that is ahead. We are optimistic that he will soon return with us." Messi, 38, entered this weekend with 18 goals, tied with Sam Surridge of Nashville SC for the lead in the chase for the Golden Boot. The Argentina native also has nine assists in 18 MLS matches (17 starts) this season. After visiting Orlando City, the Herons will host Los Angeles FC next Saturday before facing Tigres UANL in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals on Aug. 20 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. --Field Level Media

Rees-Zammit 'could have made the Jaguars team' Louis Rees-Zammit could have made the Jacksonville Jaguars team, according to Sky Sports NFL pundit and former New York Giants cornerback Jason Bell. The former Gloucester Rugby winger has decided to quit American football and return to rugby after one season on the practice squad with Jaguars, with whom he did not play a regular season game. Preparing for his role as an analyst on Sky, Bell watched Rees-Zammit in pre-season training and was impressed with him, even suggesting he could have made the team. "Professional sport gives you a very short window," Bell said to The Guardian. "You're always fighting Father Time. "Louis should be very proud of himself. In the NFL we celebrate players who can play two different positions. The fact he even attempted to play a totally different sport at the very highest level is amazing. This year he could have made the team from what I saw in training, you never really know. Article continues below "I'm the wrong person to ask because I wasn't supposed to make it. I wasn't picked up in the draft, but ended up playing in the NFL for eight years." Rees-Zammit is now searching for his new club upon his return to rugby, with Cardiff and Bristol Bears just two of the clubs reportedly interested in acquiring his services. The Wales international is also being targeted by the new R360 league, which he will reportedly join next year after one season back in club rugby. England boss appeals to World Rugby over star's eligibility England head coach Steve Borthwick is appealing to World Rugby about the eligibility of English-based South African players, according to The Telegraph. Benhard Janse van Rensburg, Hanro Liebenberg and Jacques Vermeulen are players who are blocked from being called up by England because they have represented South Africa under-20s. However, the RFU believes they should be allowed to switch allegiance. Between 2015 and 2017, South Africa U20s were officially the 'next national representative team', meaning that despite the fact they never played for the senior side, these players are blocked from representing other countries. If World Rugby agrees with England's challenge, then it could unlock a whole host of Test match talent for Borthwick and Co. The meeting will take place at the end of September, and follows the news that the RFU wanted clarification over whether these South African players should remain "captured" by their country. Van Rensburg has openly discussed his desire to one day play Test rugby for England. Schmidt reveals Wallabies injury fallout from Lions series Australia head coach Joe Schmidt has offered a mixed update on the fitness of his star players just a week after their British & Irish Lions series triumph – and with the Rugby Championship opener against South Africa looming. Schmidt confirmed that key forwards Rob Valetini, Will Skelton and Taniela Tupou are all expected to be available for next Saturday's clash at Ellis Park, despite carrying knocks from the three-Test series win over the Lions. Tupou has been nursing a toe injury picked up during his influential display in the Sydney decider, while Valetini missed the first and third Tests with a calf problem. Skelton also sat out the opener with a similar issue before returning for the final two games. 'They're definitely all in contention for Ellis Park,' Schmidt told the Sydney Morning Herald. 'Will played 60 minutes [in the third Test], Nela [Tupou] played 60-odd in Sydney… Bobby [Valetini] did a really good run yesterday, so our ambition is that he'll train fully with us this week.' The Wallabies will face the Springboks again in Pretoria a week later. However, fly-half Tom Lynagh and prop Allan Alaalatoa remain longer-term concerns. Lynagh is following return-to-play protocols after concussion, while Alaalatoa is recovering from a shoulder injury. 'We're going to have to see how the next two weeks go for both of them,' Schmidt said. 'Allan is recovering pretty well… We'll also be really conservative with Tom. He's a young player and we've just got to make sure we look after them as best we can.' Shedeur Sanders confronts 'negative' journalist in the tunnel following his stunning Cleveland Browns debut
Shedeur Sanders was filmed calling out a critical local journalist just moments after his stunning debut for the Cleveland Browns on Friday night. Sanders has faced extreme scrutiny during this summer's offseason after his notorious slide down the NFL Draft board back in April. The son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, who coached Shedeur at Colorado in college football, finally landed with the Browns and got his first taste of NFL action on Friday night. The 23-year-old took his chance and completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdown passes as the Browns defeated the Carolina Panthers 30-10. But, in the moments after the game, Sanders spoke with local Cleveland sports writer and radio personality Tony Grossi in the tunnel. Sanders was not confrontational but the quarterback did question why Grossi had been critical of him in his coverage this summer. 'Tony, I be hoping you have something positive to say about me,' Sanders tells Grossi in the footage captured by Deion Sanders Jr.'s Well Off Media. 'You only say negative stuff about me. And I'm like, "I ain't do nothing to you".' It is unclear what Grossi said in response but Sanders continued, adding: 'I ain't hear nothing positive you've ever said.' Whatever Grossi said in response prompted a laugh and playful shoulder pat from the quarterback, who remained steadfast in his opinion of the negative coverage. 'What I do to you, Tony?' Sanders asks as he starts walking back to the locker room. Grossi said after Friday night's game that Sanders' performance was 'outstanding'. In fact, his preseason debut was so impressive that even LeBron James took notice. 'That young (man) looking good out there,' James posted on X. 'Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high.' Sanders, a highly-rated draft prospect who endured a dramatic fall into the fifth round in April, entered the game fourth on the Browns depth chart, but was pressed into starting duty because of injuries. His status could change after he led three touchdown drives in nearly three full quarters of action, showing tremendous poise and awareness in the pocket. Sanders said he's not worried about how the depth chart shakes out. 'When I get out there it's just doing what I gotta do,' Sanders said. 'Everything else is not in my hands, so I don't worry about it. I just don´t think that deep into everything because it´s nothing you´re gonna be able to control. So why put energy in something that you can´t control?' Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said he was pleased with how Sanders played, but said it's too early to know if he will get more reps in practice or start the next preseason game against the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in what is viewed as an open quarterback competition. 'I'm honestly not focused there,' Stefanski said. 'I think the guys need to continue to earn their roles. That´s what these guys are doing.'
