Shedeur Sanders confronts 'negative' journalist in the tunnel following his stunning Cleveland Browns debut

Daily Mail3 days ago
Shedeur Sanders was filmed calling out a critical local journalist just moments after his stunning debut for the Cleveland Browns on Friday night.
Sanders has faced extreme scrutiny during this summer's offseason after his notorious slide down the NFL Draft board back in April.
The son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, who coached Shedeur at Colorado in college football, finally landed with the Browns and got his first taste of NFL action on Friday night.
The 23-year-old took his chance and completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdown passes as the Browns defeated the Carolina Panthers 30-10.
But, in the moments after the game, Sanders spoke with local Cleveland sports writer and radio personality Tony Grossi in the tunnel.
Sanders was not confrontational but the quarterback did question why Grossi had been critical of him in his coverage this summer.
'Tony, I be hoping you have something positive to say about me,' Sanders tells Grossi in the footage captured by Deion Sanders Jr.'s Well Off Media.
'You only say negative stuff about me. And I'm like, "I ain't do nothing to you".'
It is unclear what Grossi said in response but Sanders continued, adding: 'I ain't hear nothing positive you've ever said.'
Whatever Grossi said in response prompted a laugh and playful shoulder pat from the quarterback, who remained steadfast in his opinion of the negative coverage.
'What I do to you, Tony?' Sanders asks as he starts walking back to the locker room.
Grossi said after Friday night's game that Sanders' performance was 'outstanding'.
In fact, his preseason debut was so impressive that even LeBron James took notice.
'That young (man) looking good out there,' James posted on X. 'Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high.'
Sanders, a highly-rated draft prospect who endured a dramatic fall into the fifth round in April, entered the game fourth on the Browns depth chart, but was pressed into starting duty because of injuries.
His status could change after he led three touchdown drives in nearly three full quarters of action, showing tremendous poise and awareness in the pocket.
Sanders said he's not worried about how the depth chart shakes out.
'When I get out there it's just doing what I gotta do,' Sanders said. 'Everything else is not in my hands, so I don't worry about it. I just don´t think that deep into everything because it´s nothing you´re gonna be able to control. So why put energy in something that you can´t control?'
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said he was pleased with how Sanders played, but said it's too early to know if he will get more reps in practice or start the next preseason game against the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in what is viewed as an open quarterback competition.
'I'm honestly not focused there,' Stefanski said. 'I think the guys need to continue to earn their roles. That´s what these guys are doing.'

Steelers' Tomlin says Aaron Rodgers (calf) fine after practice misstep

August 13 - Aaron Rodgers is feeling old, as his longevity in the NFL has surpassed that of his preferred helmet model. But any concerns over his 41-year-old body taking another hit Tuesday were quickly put to rest. Rodgers needed his calf wrapped after he was stepped on during the final practice of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp, but coach Mike Tomlin was unconcerned after Rodgers was able to finish practice. Rookie Derrick Harmon bull-rushed an offensive lineman into Pittsburgh's new quarterback, and Rodgers lower leg was accidentally stepped on in the process. Per reports from camp in Latrobe, Pa., Rodgers had scratches on his right shin and athletic trainers applied a bag of ice. The trainers wrapped his calf, and he returned to the drill without missing a rep. "He just got stepped on," Tomlin said afterward. "It was nothing of any significance. He finished his work." Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on his fourth snap as a New York Jet in 2023, but that injury was to his left leg, not his right. Rodgers spoke to reporters before practice, where the focus was more on his new helmet, the Schutt Air XP Pro VTD II. Rodgers had to pick a new model because his previous one, the Schutt Air XP Pro Q11 LTD, is no longer sanctioned because it doesn't meet the league's evolved safety standards. "I don't like it, no," Rodgers said Tuesday. "I'm trying to change. We're in the process still. It looks like a damn spaceship out there. "We got to change it. The face mask doesn't fit the helmet because that's an old face mask, obviously just like I'm old, but we're trying to find the right helmet right now." --Field Level Media

Chargers WR Ladd McConkey (undisclosed) returns to practice

August 13 - Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey was back at practice and participating in 11-on-11 drills Tuesday after missing time with an undisclosed injury, according to The Athletic. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh had previously said that McConkey was "working through something minor" while not disclosing which body part he had injured. McConkey had been limited or absent the last two weeks of practice before returning on Tuesday, per media reports. McConkey also refused to disclose what injury he had been dealing with, simply saying, "I'm good." "I feel really good. It felt great to get back out there a little bit, catching passes," McConkey said. " ... I feel like I'm (100 percent) now. It's just building everything back up, getting in the swing of things, getting my conditioning back where it needs to be." McConkey is looking to build on a breakout rookie season in 2024 during which he led the team and set Chargers regular-season rookie records with 82 receptions and 1,149 receiving yards, breaking records previously set by Keenan Allen in 2013, to go along with his seven touchdown catches. In his playoff debut, McConkey set an NFL rookie postseason record with 197 receiving yards in the Chargers' 32-12 loss at Houston. He scored the team's lone touchdown of the game on an 86-yard catch-and-run scramble into the end zone. -Field Level Media

Alcaraz eases past Medjedovic in Cincinnati for 50th win of the season

Aug 12 (Reuters) - Carlos Alcaraz eased past Serbia's Hamad Medjedovic 6-4 6-4 to reach the Cincinnati Open last 16 on Tuesday, battling the sweltering Ohio heat to notch his tour-leading 50th victory of the season. The Spanish second seed also secured his 13th consecutive win at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, converting three of seven break points in a deliberate, slow-paced contest. Treated for neck pain after the first set, Medjedovic ramped up in the second to shorten rallies, out-hitting Alcaraz 25–16 on winners but committing 38 unforced errors to the Spaniard's 18. "I know he's a really powerful player," Alcaraz said. "His shots are incredibly hard to return. He has a big serve also. I know he doesn't like to run too much from side to side, so my plan was to make him run as much as I could." Monte Carlo and Rome champion Alcaraz next faces Italian Luca Nardi as he continues his bid for an eight Masters 1000 title. Earlier, Andrey Rublev rallied from a set down to edge Alexei Popyrin 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 7-5 in a fierce 3-1/2-hour battle. The Russian ninth seed will play against Argentine Franciso Comesana, who claimed a stunning 6-7(4) 6-4 7-5 win over American Reilly Opelka. In the women's draw, second seed Coco Gauff advanced after Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska withdrew from their third-round clash due to illness. The American will face Lucia Bronzetti, who beat 23rd seed Jelena Ostapenko 1-6 6-3 6-4. It marked the second third-round walkover, following fellow Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk's withdrawal before her match against Polish third seed Iga Swiatek. The Wimbledon champion will take on Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the round of 16.
