Stalin unveils TN SEP, says will follow two-language policy

Tamil Nadu
govt's State Education Policy (SEP) for school education, unveiled on Friday, has reposed faith in the present system, including two-language formula, no-detention policy up to Class VIII, and board exams only for Class X and XII.
It has abolished board examinations for Class XI.
(The National Education Policy (NEP) recommends a three-language formula, common exams for classes III, V, and VIII, and a new school education system of 5+3+3+4).
The policy also mandated a climate curriculum focused on Tamil Nadu's specific environmental challenges for school students. It also recommended introducing financial literacy, digital literacy and technology skills for school students.

'We will follow a two-language policy with Tamil and English,' chief minister MK Stalin said after releasing the SEP, adding that physical education would be added to the curriculum. 'Education for all, quality education for all is the policy of our Dravidian model govt. This policy will help our students compete globally,' Stalin said.
Abolishing the board exams for Class XI state board students, introduced in 2018, the SEP said: 'Class XI should be treated as a preparatory and transition year focusing on subject enrichment, skill development and academic readiness through continuous, competency-based internal assessments.

'Curricular content needs to address structures of inequality related to caste, gender, and socio-economic status. Tamil Nadu's rich cultural, historical, and environmental context needs to be showcased,' the policy said.
The SEP advocates activity-based learning, project-based learning, experiential learning, and arts and sports integration. Students will receive structured career guidance from Class IX, and schools need to have solar panels, rainwater harvesting, digital labs, clean sanitation, and inclusive play areas.
Speaking to reporters later, school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi stated that all students studying in state board, CBSE, ICSE, or IB curriculum need to study Tamil as a subject from Class I to X as per the Tamil Nadu Tamil Learning Act, 2006. While opting for the no-detention policy, we will ensure that all students attain the learning level prescribed for each class,'
The policy also highlighted various flagship schemes, including the Basic Literacy and Numeracy (BLN) campaign, to ensure all primary children are able to read and write.
