Monsoon mayhem: 313 roads, including 2 NH, remain closed in Himachal Pradesh
The cumulative loss across the state has climbed to a staggering Rs 2,144 crore as of August 16.
A landslide strcuk NH-305 in Kullu district at Jhed (Khanag), blocking the highway. In response, authorities opened an alternative route via Kandugad for light motor vehicles.
Similarly, NH-05 was blocked in Kinnaur district at Ribba Nallah and also at Malling Nallah, where shooting stones and landslides stalled vehicular traffic.
The highest number of 175 roads in the state were blocked on Saturday evening in the monsoon disaster-hit Mandi district, followed by 64 in Kullu district.
Besides this, a total of 348 power distribution transformers and 119 water supply schemes were also affected across the state, as per the state emergency operation centre (SEOC). The water supply to the state capital Shimla has also been affected since August 15 because of the silt deposit at the water pumping station sites, including at Gumma.

A total of 136 deaths in the hill state were attributed to monsoon-related incidents, and 37 persons still remain missing from the start of the monsoon on June 20 until Aug 16. The Himalayan state witnessed as many as 74 flash floods, 34 cloudbursts, and 63 major landslides during this monsoon period.
The hill state witnessed rains at most places on Saturday. The highest 38.4 mm of rain was recorded in Mandi district, followed by 30.5 mm in Bilaspur, 20.8 mm in Kangra, 12.2 mm in Solan, 12.1 mm in Hamirpur, and 11.8 mm in Sirmaur district.
The lowest minimum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 12.4°C at Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district, and the highest maximum temperature of 33°C at Paonta Sahib in Sirmaur district.
Yellow alert
The weather department has issued a yellow alert predicting heavy rains at isolated places in Shimla, Mandi, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Chamba districts on Sunday. Kangra district is also likely to witness heavy rains at isolated places on Aug 18 and 19, and Mandi on Aug 19. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall has been predicted at a few places across the state during this period.

1 2 Yamunanagar: After nearly six weeks of calm, the Yamuna River surged into spate on Saturday following heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In response, all 18 gates of the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district were opened for the first time this monsoon season, releasing a massive 1,78,896 cusecs of water downstream. The discharge is expected to reach Delhi within 30–48 hours, raising the river's water level and posing a flood risk to low-lying areas. Officials from the Haryana irrigation and water resources department (IWRD) sounded alert sirens before opening the gates and issued warnings to residents and farmers to stay away from riverbanks and move livestock to safer areas. The district administration and Delhi government have been informed of the situation. R S Mittal, superintendent engineer at Haryana IWRD, Yamunanagar, said the heavy rainfall in the hilly catchment areas led to a sharp rise in water levels, necessitating the release. "This is the first time this season that all 18 gates of the Hathnikund barrage have been opened. Supply to canals has been stopped to manage the increased flow," he said. Water levels in the Yamuna rose steadily through Sunday morning. At 10 am, the flow was 74,304 cusecs, rising to 81,353 cusecs at 11 am, 91,985 cusecs at noon, and 1.16 lakh cusecs by 1 pm. By 3 pm, the discharge peaked at 1.78 lakh cusecs, according to IWRD officials. Meanwhile, several other rivers and streams in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are also in spate. The Somb River, a Yamuna tributary with a capacity of 10,000 cusecs, is currently carrying over 23,000 cusecs, threatening villages in its catchment area. In Dhanaura village and nearby Haripur Khol, local streams have overflowed, raising fears of inundation. At Ranjitpur, the bridge connecting Haryana to Himachal Pradesh is under pressure as river water flows over it, causing concern among residents. Mandi district has been particularly affected, reporting 26 rain-related deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure. Other severely hit districts include Kangra (28 deaths), Chamba (10), and Kullu (11). The HPSDMA report highlights damage worth Rs 2,14,457 lakh to public and private property. Roads, water supply schemes, agriculture, horticulture, and electricity infrastructure have suffered heavily. The Public Works Department alone reported losses exceeding Rs 1.18 lakh crore, while combined agricultural and horticultural losses are estimated at over Rs 83,000 crore. Road connectivity remains one of the worst-hit sectors, with frequent blockages on NH-05 (Kinnaur) and NH-305 (Kullu), leaving several interior villages cut off and delaying rescue and relief operations.
