Chris Hughes from The Eggheads dies aged 77
Chris Hughes, the Eggheads quiz star, has died aged 77.
A statement on the programme's social media accounts paid tribute to the 'great' quizzer and the 'happy memories' he provided from his two decades on the show.
Mr Hughes was one of several general knowledge experts who regularly appeared on the series, which saw members of the public challenge the five ' Eggheads '.
The statement, posted on the show's X and Facebook accounts, read: 'It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Eggheads great Chris Hughes.
'Chris joined the show in 2003 and over the next 20 years gave us not only brilliant answers but very many laughs and happy memories. He will be hugely missed by all his Eggheads family.'
Mr Hughes died at his home in Crewe. His cause of death has not been announced.
The quizzer was in the long-running series' original line-up after being crowned a champion quizzer on Mastermind, International Mastermind and Brain of Britain, and also appeared on The Weakest Link.
Eggheads, a general knowledge challenge programme which was originally aired on the BBC before moving to Channel 5, saw a team made up of members of the public try to beat the general knowledge experts.
If they were successful, they would take home a cash prize, and if not £1,000 would roll over to the next week.
The series was presented by news presenter Dermot Murnaghan, before Radio 2 DJ and Channel 5 talk show host Jeremy Vine took over the role.
Paying tribute to Mr Hughes on X, Eggheads producer Robert Dean said '[Hughes] was an amazing Egghead who considered everyone on the production team part of his family.
'I have such fond memories of him and count myself lucky to have known him. I'll miss him tremendously.'
Anne Robinson, the former Weakest Link host, said Mr Hughes was 'the best contestant we have had' when he reached the final of The Weakest Link without getting a single question wrong.
Mr Hughes' final show was the 'Bean Headz' episode, which aired on April 26, 2023.

Maura Higgins lands major new TV role after being replaced on Love Island
Love Island star Maura Higgins has secured a huge boost as she has landed a major role on TV where she will rub shoulders with a very close person to Taylor Swift Maura Higgins has received a huge boost after being replaced from her presenting spot on Love Island USA. The reality TV star, 34, had found fame on the show herself and landed the spot of host of US Aftersun. However, she now won't be returning to the role but has something even better up her sleeve. She has been s pending more and more time Stateside, and it appears to be paying off. Maura has landed a major new show in her bid to break America. The Love Islander is competing in the upcoming series of The Traitors USA and will join the likes of Real Housewives Lisa Rinna, Porsha Williams, Dorinda Medley and Candiace Bassett. She will rub shoulders with Taylor Swift's boyfriend Travis Kelce's mum Donna as well as Big Brother stars Ian Terry and Tiffany Mitchell. Survivor's Rob Cesternino and Yam Yam Arocho have been named to take part alongside The Amazing Race winner Natalie Anderson. The Bachelor's Colton Underwood, Dancing with the Stars pro Mark Ballas, RuPaul's Drag Race's Monét X Change, figure skater Johnny Weir and singer Eric Nam are all on the list The boost comes after Maura couldn't return to Love Island USA due to conflicting schedules. She will be replaced by Sophie Monk, who is already familiar with how Love Island works due to being the host of the Australian version. Love Island fans haven't lost hope of Maura moving on from the series, however, as they think she could come back to host Aftersun for the second season of Love Island Games which films in Fiji later this year. Maura got off to a tricky start this year as she was caught kissing married McFly singer Danny Jones at the BRIT Awards following her split from Pete Wicks. Danny went on to issue a grovelling apology to his wife, Georgia Horsley, and son, Cooper, seven, while Maura stayed silent. She instead fled to the US to focus on a fashion shoot and later returned to attend the music festival Coachella in the California desert. Maura showed she was keen to keep working in the States, having rubbed shoulders with Kendall and Kylie Jenner, as well as Hailey Bieber. Maura landed the role of social media host for Love Island USA as well as Love Island Games in 2023. A year later, she went on to present Love Island USA: Aftersun and became a hit with viewers. It seems Maura is keen to continue to work in the US, as she has chosen to take part in their series of Celebrity Traitors instead of the UK. The BBC will air its first ever celebrity spin-off of the hit murder mystery series later this year. Names including Kate Garraway, Alan Carr, Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross and Paloma Faith are set to take part, as well as singer Cat Burns, actor Celia Imrie, singer and activist Charlotte Church, broadcaster Clare Balding, historian David Olusoga, rugby star Joe Marler and comedian Joe Wilkinson.

Meghan and Harry brutally AXE host of key aides yet again after blaming them for string of PR humiliations
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE Duke and Duchess of Sussex have given their communications team the boot after blaming them for a series of PR humiliations. Harry and wife Meghan decided instead to go with the firm behind their controversial twerking video — sparking fears of a 'clickbait' approach which will horrify the Royal Family. 'No one ever seems to be good enough for them and yet they fail to understand why things don't change.' This year's embarrassments included January's take-down of Meghan in society bible Vanity. It reignited bullying allegations and was headlined 'American Hustle'. In February experts described as chaotic the rebranding of Meghan's 'American Riviera Orchard' food brand into 'As ever'. Her six-part Netflix cookery and lifesyle show was savaged by TV reviewers in both the UK and USA, while her podcast 'Confessions of a Female Founder' quickly tumbled down the ratings. Meghan, 43, was also caught out calling herself 'Her Royal Highness' in a potential breach of the 2020 Megxit agreement struck with the late Queen. The Sussexes responded by firing two directors of communications in what insiders described as a purge. UK-based Charlie Gipson went along with California-based Kyle Boulia. Deesha Tank, who worked for the couple's Archewell foundation for three years, had resigned days earlier. Meanwhile the head of content for Meghan's Instagram account also left. Several weeks ago the couple hired Emily Robinson as a new director of communications — despite her previously running ublicity for The Crown episodes which showed Harry in Nazi fancy dress and sympathetic storylines on depraved sex offender Mohammed Al-Fayed. Harry and Meghan have now brought in Method Communications, who claim they are 'disruptors' who 'challenge the status quo'. I know the exact moment Prince Harry had second thoughts about how he's treated the king It is understood one of their first acts was releasing the video of heavily pregnant Meghan dancing in a maternity as she tried to induce Lilibet's birth. The clip was widely panned but pulled in 42million views. Photos of Lilibet and six-year-old brother Archie, with their faces covered by emjois, were then posted online showing the kids in Disneyland. Their chief communications officer remains Meredith Maines, appointed in March days before Harry scuppered any hope of a reconciliation with King Charles in an angry interview with the BBC. Ms Maines said last night: 'Transitioning from a team of two to an agency support staff of eight, operating across five different time zones, will give international media and stakeholders better access.' 8 Meghan shares a video of her and Harry twerking in a hospital room Credit: Instagram 8 Meghan and Harry with Archie and Lilibet at Disneyland Credit: Instagram 8 Charlie Gipson was axed in the purge 8 California-based Kyle Boulia was also let go Credit: Getty

Lee Mack lifts lid on Noel Gallagher 'snub' after meeting on show
Lee Mack quipped he "harassed" the Oasis singer with a specific request. Lee Mack has revealed he was "snubbed" by Noel Gallagher after making a specific request to the Oasis singer. The 1% Club host appeared on Friday's The One Show to speak about his new series of Not Going Out with Sally Bretton. At one point, during a new episode of the sitcom, Lee references Oasis, based on his own relatable experiences of failing to secure tickets to the reunion tour. However, he's now revealed he had plans to involve Noel in the series. "I like everybody else was queuing for hours online, and we couldn't get them, so I thought, well I haven't got tickets but I'll write a show about them," he told BBC hosts Alex Jones and Clara Amfo. "And there I am, proving I can't sing. And I thought, wouldn't it be great if Noel Gallagher turned up?" Lee recalled his last appearance on The One Show, which happened to be when he met the Wonderwall singer. "As far as I'm concerned, meeting someone for five minutes, we're now friends," Lee said. "So I harassed him and texted him, got his number and asked him to be on the show." "And?" hosts Alex and Clara probed. Sadly, it was a no from Noel, as Lee revealed: "He never contacted me."
