NEW DELHI: Former India opener
Navjot Singh Sidhu
on Wednesday praised head coach
Gautam Gambhir
for showing conviction and belief during India's hard-fought Test series in England, and questioned his critics, asking if they would now 'stand up and greet him' after the 2-2 draw.
India, touring without recently retired legends
Virat Kohli
and
Rohit Sharma
, produced spirited performances across five closely-contested matches to hold England to a commendable draw on their home turf.

'We do a lot of hero-worshipping. I want to say that whenever India plays even a little badly, anyone and everyone climbs on Gautam Gambhir and blames him.
Will you stand up and greet him today?' Sidhu asked on his YouTube channel.
He acknowledged that playing wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav might have yielded results, but applauded Gambhir for sticking to his methods and backing emerging talent.
'It was Gautam Gambhir who insisted on this transition, who gave opportunities to guys like Akash Deep and Washington. Yes, Kuldeep was maybe a better option. But he had conviction.

There will be scope for improvement today and tomorrow as well. But for someone who has been questioned and criticised so much, today give him the due that he deserves.'
Sidhu added: 'There were many unknowns when the team went who had not made their name. Gambhir had told three to four big names are missing from the team but think of it as an opportunity for others to establish themselves.

"His words have proven to be true.
Be it Brisbane, Perth, or England, history has been scripted by youngsters and it is a big thing."
Gambhir had entered the England tour under considerable pressure, following a historic Test series whitewash at home to New Zealand and disappointing results in Australia. Sidhu recalled how Gambhir had urged his players to treat the tour as a major opportunity to make their mark.

Sanju Samson recalls Gautam Gambhir's warning: 'I'll remove you from team only if ... '
Sanju Samson and Gautam Gambhir (X) Sanju Samson 's cricketing story has always been about quiet grit meeting the right people at the right moments. He still remembers the day in Andhra during a Duleep Trophy game when Suryakumar Yadav walked up to him with a promise – there were seven matches lined up, and Samson would open in all of them. Speaking to R Ashwin on his YouTube channel, Samson recalled how, for a batter, that sort of assurance from the captain meant the world. The start, though, was far from ideal. On a tour of Sri Lanka, he bagged ducks in both his first two games. The weight of missed opportunities began to creep in, until Gautam Gambhir – 'Gauti bhai' to him – cut through the gloom. Gambhir asked what was wrong, heard the self-critical reply, and responded with a line Samson has never forgotten: 'I'll remove you from the team only if you score 21 ducks.' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! That faith would become fuel. In 2024, Samson finally delivered on the big stage, producing three T20I centuries in just five matches – one against Bangladesh at home and two against South Africa away – a record unmatched by any batter in a single calendar year. It was a season that justified the belief shown by his mentors. Yet even as his international stock soars, his IPL future is shrouded in uncertainty. Samson's relationship with Rajasthan Royals , the franchise he has led and represented since 2013 (barring the suspension years), has soured. Poll Which team do you think would benefit the most from signing Sanju Samson? Chennai Super Kings Mumbai Indians Delhi Capitals Kolkata Knight Riders According to reports serious differences have emerged, leading the skipper to formally request a trade or release. Those close to him say he wants out, but under IPL rules, only the franchise can decide his fate. RR are exploring options, but a player of his calibre – valued at ₹18 crore – is not easy to move. Multiple teams, including Chennai Super Kings , have shown interest, yet no deal has come close. For now, the Royals hold the cards, but the bigger question looms: can a team truly thrive when its captain no longer wishes to be there? The coming weeks may define not just Samson's IPL chapter, but also a franchise's willingness to let go of one of its brightest stars. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. 'We were challenged at times throughout the game': New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner after their biggest Test win
Mitchell Santner (AP Photo) New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner praised his team's bowling performance after their victory against Zimbabwe, particularly highlighting their first innings effort. New Zealand secured their largest Test cricket win, defeating Zimbabwe by an innings and 359 runs at Bulawayo on Saturday. The victory featured centuries from Devon Conway , Henry Nicholls , and Rachin Ravindra, along with a remarkable bowling spell by Zakary Foulkes. The win marks New Zealand's 2-0 series triumph and stands as the third-largest victory margin in Test cricket history. Only England's innings and 579-run win over Australia in 1938 and Australia's innings and 360-run victory against South Africa surpass this margin. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'A great game in all aspects. We were challenged at times throughout the game, and I guess we kind of got through those periods by cashing in on it. I think the way we bowled, especially in the first innings, it was probably a little bit there, but the way we bowled Zimbabwe for 120 in that first innings, and then we could really cash in with the bat, can't really complain about anything from this game,' said Santner in the post-match press conference. 'We've seen Zak in some of the white ball stuff, and I guess here, as someone kind of swinging into the right-hander is, you don't see that often," added Santner. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo 'So I guess another addition to our attack with the guys who are moving the ball away. So he was outstanding, and when the lefties come on, he looks pretty tough to play. To get, I guess, nine in the game on debut is a pretty good effort. Poll How impressed were you with Zakary Foulkes' debut performance? Very impressed Somewhat impressed Not impressed 'It's obviously a nice thing to finish the tour on a win. But in that tri-series, we were challenged at different stages against two good teams in Harare, and then to score the first goal, I guess to make the final, and then to win in a close game against South Africa was cool.' 'Then coming here, again, a different challenge, different surface, different conditions, and the boys looked at home and stepped up, which was great to see. I guess we will reflect on the series, the good and bad, and then we get back home, and I guess get to play in friendlier conditions than what we were going to get here. 'But the way the new seam group this game stepped up, it puts us in a great position when we go home, as we've got plenty of options with the ball. Jamieson will probably be back in, Kane's back in as well with the bat, so it could be a slightly different-looking team. But guys who come in and step up straight away, it's a great position to be in,' he concluded. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Will Joe Root overtake Sachin Tendulkar's Test runs tally?
Joe Root couldn't take England to victory in a mammoth fourth-innings chase in the fifth Test vs India, but he did hit a magnificent century, which pushed his Test runs tally higher up. It stands at 13,543 runs now in 158 Test matches. The only man ahead of him is Sachin Tendulkar. The magic number after the India-England series is 2378 - that's how many runs Root trail's Tendulkar's 15921 tally by. So can Root overtake Tendulkar's tally? If yes, when should we expect him to do it? He ended the five Tests against India with 537 runs from nine innings, averaging 67.1. He was England's highest run-getter, and only Shubman Gill's extraordinary run-glut prevented Root from topping the charts. This series came on the back of some stellar years for Root. Since England's away series against Sri Lanka at the start of 2021, Root has been tearing it up across the world. He was good until that point too - after all, he was spoken of alongside Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson as the 'Fab Four' - but since 2021, he has hit a different level. Matches Inns Runs Avg 100s 50s Inns/100 Inns/50+ Till Dec 2020 97 177 7823 48.0 17 49 10.4 2.7 From Jan 2021 61 111 5720 56.6 22 17 5.1 2.8 As can be seen, Root's curve has gone sharply upwards from 2021. The key difference is in how well he has been converting his starts into big scores. He reaches 50 at almost the same rate (in fact, it's slightly lower 2021 onwards), but he's scoring hundreds twice as often as he used to. In real terms, he's gone from scoring 80 runs per match to scoring 94 runs per match. Obviously, what Root is doing right now is at his peak. He will turn 35 in December though, and to beat Tendulkar's mark, he'll have to play for a few more years still. What Root has in his favour is that England play more Test cricket than anyone else. So he'll get enough opportunity to go past Tendulkar. This is what England's Test schedule is according to the FTP, as it stands: 5 Ashes Tests, in starting November 2025 3 Tests v New Zealand at home, starting June 2026 3 Tests v Pakistan at home, starting August 2026 3 Tests v South Africa away, starting December 2026 2 Tests v Bangladesh away, starting February 2027 That's already 16 Tests in a year and a half. At his current rate, Root is scoring 94 runs per game. His past rate was 80 runs per game. Taking a conservative estimate of 65 runs per game for the rest of his career, to cover for decline and loss of form, Root should score at least more than 1000 runs within this period. Remember, he doesn't miss Test matches for England and has had no major injury scares. At the end of this FTP cycle then, Root might be within 1000 to 1500 runs away from Tendulkar. He'll also be 37 years old by then. Tendulkar, of course, played till he was 40. There is no reason Root shouldn't be able to do the same. He doesn't have a heavy T20 workload, and can always cut down on ODIs, especially after the 2027 World Cup. How many Tests will Root need to play to overtake Tendulkar? By a generously conservative estimate, he might need 35 to 40 Tests. If he continues scoring at his current rate, he might do it in 25 Tests too. Taking a safe mid-point between them puts the figure at around 30 Tests. Which, give or take a few, is three years. Will Root play on for another three years? There is no reason why he shouldn't. Unless motivation becomes a problem or he his form falls off a cliff all of a sudden. That is a million-dollar question, which has no answer. Or rather, it has every answer imaginable, because it is completely subjective. You can cut and parse numbers in very refined ways with modern analytics. But it might ultimately come down to intangibles for every individual. Root might never be Tendulkar's equal overall, because their ODI records have a huge gulf, but he will definitely be spoken of in the same breath as Tendulkar in Test cricket. And that is mind-boggling in itself, because when Tendulkar set his mark, it was thought to be impossible for anyone to reach it.
