Kolkata: A couple from Salt Lake visiting Kalighat temple were arrested and three others were detained for questioning after they engaged in an argument with on-duty policemen inside the temple.
They allegedly assaulted a policeman and a woman civic volunteer during the fracas.
Police said the incident happened on Friday evening when a group of five allegedly tried to enter Kalighat temple in an improper manner and created a disturbance in front of the Garbhagriha.
"SI Biswajit Das requested them multiple times to maintain peace and tranquillity inside the temple and stand in a proper queue. But they continued to create disturbance and stood outside the queue while arguing with the policemen," a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.
As an argument broke out, the group started shouting at cops and assaulted the cops with fists and blows, officers claimed. "The group not only injured one of our sub-inspectors but also molested a woman civic volunteer. All five of them were initially detained and two of them were later arrested," said the officer.
They were booked under BNS sections dealing with molestation, criminal force, assault on a public servant and common intention.

Mumbai garment dealer on ventilator after being flung into air by SUV driven without licence

Mumbai: Naresh Bhagchandani (60), a garment dealer, is in critical condition on a ventilator at Lilavati Hospital after being struck by an SUV during a morning walk on Wednesday near Rajat Milk Dairy in Andheri (West). The accident happened near Bhagchandani's Lokhandwala residence. The police arrested Manav Jain (20), who they said was at the wheel of the SUV without a valid driving licence and fled the scene after ramming into an autorickshaw. He was arrested on Thursday night and subsequently released on bail. The police impounded the SUV, owned by Jain's sister. Investigations revealed that Jain took the vehicle for a ride, resulting in the collision with Bhagchandani, who had left his Lokhandwala residence minutes before the accident. "Jain was tracked using closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage along the escape route. The vehicle was registered in the name of his sister, and he does not possess a valid licence. Additional sections will be added to the FIR against Jain for driving without a licence under the Motor Vehicles Act. His sister will also be charged for providing the car despite knowing about his lack of a licence," a police officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Arthritis Mistakes That Are Silently Crippling Seniors Joint Health Findings Undo Witnesses reported that Bhagchandani was thrown into the air before crashing on to the front windscreen of the SUV and subsequently on to the road. He sustained severe injuries, including head trauma, dislocation of two ribs near the spinal cord, and a fractured foot. The incident was reported after Bhagchandani's wife, Deepika (59), filed a complaint with the police on the same day. A police officer mentioned that CCTV footage near Rajput Milk Dairy at Accord Building captured Bhagchandani walking when the speeding SUV struck him and ran over him. Deepika said her husband used to leave for a walk daily at 6.30 am, returning home by 7.30 am. At 7 am on Wednesday, a milk vendor from Rajput Milk Centre reached the building where Bhagchandani lived with his wife and informed her about the incident. "We seek justice and appeal to the Mumbai police for severe action against the accused. Our family resides abroad, and our mother cannot handle the case alone. The milk vendor informed my mother, Deepika (59). With assistance from the building security guard, she arrived at the scene in our car and rushed my father to the hospital, where he underwent multiple spinal surgeries and was treated for a fractured leg," Bhagchandani's daughter, Sana Jaising, said. Jaising and her sister arrived from Australia and the US, respectively, after learning about the incident. "The incident has shattered our lives due to the inhuman act of the reckless driver, Manav Jain. His actions left my father on a ventilator after his lungs collapsed on Friday afternoon. Following a six-hour operation, he battled depression and was traumatised by the accident, resulting in the need for anti-depressants. He lay on the road for almost 10 minutes before my mother reached him in the car and, with the help of the building guard, drove him to the hospital," she said. The police reported that the accused operates an automobile spare parts shop in Andheri. They said they were awaiting the medical examination report to determine whether he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Crime branch busts ‘money rain' racket; 3 held from Sambhajinagar hotel for duping people with black magic claims

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The city crime branch on Thursday arrested three men from a posh hotel on Jalna Road for allegedly duping people by claiming they could make money rain from the sky using black magic rituals. The suspects were staying at the hotel for extended periods while posing as mystics and conning unsuspecting victims. The raid was carried out in the early hours of Thursday, following which the accused — identified as Vikas Uttarwar, a resident of Khadki Bazar in Himayatnagar tehsil of Nanded, Vilas Kohile from Jurud village in Vaijapur tehsil, and Shankar Kajale of Chikalthana in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district — have been arrested and handed over to the Kranti Chowk police station. City commissioner of police Pravin Pawar said the arrests were made following a tip-off that some suspicious individuals were residing at the hotel near Baba Petrol Pump for several months. The inputs indicated they were possibly engaged in fraudulent and superstitious activities. Acting on this information, a team led by inspector Sambhaji Pawar of the crime branch raided the hotel and questioned the suspects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo During the operation, it was revealed that Uttarwar was occupying a room at the hotel since Dec 29, 2024. His accomplices, Kohile and Kajale, were residing in another room booked under a Pune-based man's name since April 18 this year. During the search, officials seized fake currency notes along with items typically used in occult rituals, such as vermillion, various dried roots and dried coconuts. These items were allegedly used by the trio to convince victims of their supernatural powers and ability to bring instant wealth. "The accused created a setup that appeared mystical to deceive gullible people. They convinced victims that money would fall from the sky after performing certain rituals," said a senior officer from the investigation team. Based on assistant police inspector Kashinath Mahandule's complaint, the suspects have been booked under sections 318 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. Police are now investigating whether the trio committed similar frauds in other cities and have appealed to citizens to come forward if they were cheated in similar ways.
