Ben Sulayem guides FIA to financial turnaround, marking new era of growth and stability - Middle East Business News and Information
Dubai, UAE, 20th May, 2025: The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, today announced a pivotal turnaround in its financial health under the leadership of FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
At the end of the fiscal year 2024, the Fédération reported that is has achieved a robust operating result of € 4.7m, and an operating income of € 182.0m. This takes it from a considerable financial loss of €-24.0m in 2021, before Ben Sulayem was elected.
In line with Ben Sulayem's manifesto pledge, and under the FIA's new leadership since 2021, the organisation has undergone a comprehensive strategic transformation process, designed to radically improve internal systems and processes.
It has strengthened its teams, optimised its working practices and shifted to a more efficient and financially sustainable model. Today's result, which will be published in full in the FIA's 2024 Activity Report in June, reflects this positive transition.
'Upon my election as President of the FIA, I committed to ensuring a profitable operation,' said Ben Sulayem. 'Today, I am incredibly proud to show that we have achieved this mission, delivering the strongest set of financial results in eight years.
'Improving the governance, transparency and financial health of the FIA was central to my manifesto pledge, and I will continue to work with all of our internal and external stakeholders to drive positive change within the FIA, to deliver better outcomes for our Member Clubs, our people and for all.'
The operating result of € 4.7m marks a strong improvement from 2023, with operating income growth of €+26.7m respectively +17% year-on-year. The FIA is absent of any financial debt at the 2024 fiscal year end, and it reports a healthy equity ratio of 45%.
The current leadership team has worked rigorously since 2021 to ameliorate its internal systems, controls and processes. It has strongly enhanced procurement control and automation, implemented internal quarterly reporting, and established a financial steering model which enables effective decision making within senior management.
This model has enabled increased budget control and has allowed the FIA to review its pricing and reallocate resources to best pursue its strategic priorities across motor sport and mobility.
In addition to these important measures, the FIA has introduced a second General Assembly mid-year, to ensure that prior year audited financial accounts can be established within the appropriate timeframe for release.
For the second year running, the FIA will publish a full Activity Report ahead of the General Assembly in June. This year, the Activity Report has been enhanced by a new P&L presentation format which enhances clarity and transparency.
The strengthened financial health of the FIA brings the organisation out of a five-year long period of substantial operating loss, enabling it to provide a world-class service to its 245 Member Clubs around the world, as well as reinvest into the seven World Championships under its governance.
The FIA, which is a not-for-profit organisation, is well-placed to continue pushing forward its core objectives such as strengthening grassroots participation in motor sport and driving the sustainability agenda across the board.

State-owned Holdipharma targets EGP 18bn in revenues for FY2025/2026
Mohamed El-Shimy, Minister of Public Enterprises, affirmed that the pharmaceutical industry is a vital pillar of health security and a key driver of the national economy, stressing that its development within the ministry's affiliated companies is a strategic priority. His remarks came while chairing the General Assembly meeting of the Holding Company for Pharmaceuticals (Holdipharma) to approve the budget plan for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. During the meeting, Ashraf El-Khouly, CEO and Managing Director of Holdipharma, presented the board's report, which included the draft budget for the coming fiscal year. The plan targets consolidated revenues of EGP 18bn, a 131% increase compared to 2023/2024, and net profits of EGP 3.4bn—up 343%. The report also noted the growth in the market value of the group's listed companies. The meeting, attended by Board Chair Ahmed Hegazy, members of the General Assembly, and representatives of the Central Auditing Organisation, marked the final approval of all holding companies' and subsidiaries' budgets for the new fiscal year. Minister El-Shimy explained that the ministry is working to localise and deepen pharmaceutical manufacturing, transfer and apply the latest global production technologies, and enhance product quality to strengthen competitiveness in local, regional, and international markets. Development plans include upgrading production lines, increasing manufacturing capacity, adhering to the highest standards of sustainability, quality, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), ensuring occupational health and safety, and optimising the use of assets, capacities, and resources. He added that human capital development is central to achieving these targets, through specialised training and qualification programmes that encourage innovation and advance scientific research, alongside fostering partnerships with the private sector both domestically and internationally. El-Shimy stressed that reforming the financial structures of subsidiary companies is a top priority to ensure sustainable profitability and secure the resources needed for production expansion. He underscored the importance of updating organisational structures and management systems to meet current needs, while accelerating the implementation of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to improve operational efficiency and ensure precise oversight of resources and production. The presentation also highlighted major projects and investment opportunities, including the production of biological drugs, insulin and biosimilars, dry powder inhalation tablets, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and hormones. It outlined partnerships with leading international companies, such as US-based Dawah, to produce and export products including ampoules, nutritional supplements, sterile injections, and sterile ophthalmic preparations. El-Shimy concluded by stressing the integration of economic, social, and environmental dimensions to ensure comprehensive sustainability in the company's activities. He called for promoting professional conduct, improving the work environment, and raising performance standards across all administrative and executive levels. He affirmed that the Ministry of Public Enterprises Sector is moving decisively towards modernising and restructuring its subsidiaries, striking a balance between profitability and sustainability, and enhancing Egypt's competitiveness regionally and globally. Holdipharma, he added, aims to achieve regional leadership in the sector, positioning Egypt as an advanced hub for pharmaceutical production and exports, meeting domestic needs while expanding into international markets.

A globally recognised academic working at the intersection of sport and climate change, Dr. Orr's appointment bolsters the Federation's expertise in the field of environmental sustainability and furthers the FIA's commitment to improve sustainable practices across motor sport and mobility. Dr. Orr brings deep interdisciplinary expertise, with a PhD in Kinesiology (emphasis in Sport Management), Master's degrees in both Natural Resource Science and International Event Management, and a strong record of published research and industry engagement. She has been recognised by Forbes 30 Under 30 , Corporate Knights , and other international organisations for her contributions to sustainability and sport. Her recently published book, WARMING UP, examines how climate change is impacting sport, and how the sports world can fight back.
