Chiefs Schedule Release Creates 'NFL's Official Holiday Team'

Yahoo14-05-2025

The Kansas City Chiefs have become must-watch television since Patrick Mahomes has taken over under center. The two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP is one of the league's brightest stars, and packaged with a fantastic Andy Reid-led defense, the Chiefs have become the NFL's darling.
The schedule makers and broadcast partners are all-too-aware of the star power of the Chiefs, and as a result, the Chiefs frequently find themselves in prime time, and the holiday season this upcoming season is no exception, as the Chiefs will be playing on a pair of holidays in 2025.

On Monday night, we learned that the Chiefs will host the Denver Broncos on Christmas Night, and on Wednesday morning it was revealed that the Chiefs will take a trip on down to Dallas to take on the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day.
Per usual, the Cowboys are hosting the Thanksgiving Day game in the 3:30 p.m. CT time slot, this time taking on the Chiefs. It's the first Thanksgiving Day game for the Chiefs since 2006 when they defeated the Denver Broncos at home in the first ever primetime Thanksgiving matchup.
So ... Dallas gets to stay "America's Team.'' That's just the way it is.
The Chiefs, however, get to be "The NFL's Official Holiday Team''?

It's also not the first time the Chiefs and Cowboys have met on Thanksgiving. The two teams met on the holiday in the 1995 season, when both teams were among the NFL's best. The Cowboys bested the Chiefs in that contest, 24-12. Steve Bono completed 20 of his 36 pass attempts for 276 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough to beat the Cowboys, who ran for 118 yards as a team.
The Cowboys went on to win the Super Bowl that series while the Chiefs lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the Divisional Round.
It comes as a surprise to some that the NFL chose to have the Chiefs face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving day games, especially the ones that feature the Cowboys, are always highly rated. It should be a great matchup featuring two of the NFL's marquee teams.
The rest of the Chiefs' schedule will be released tonight, and will likely be littered with primetime matchups, as has become the norm for the team.

Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Kansas City Royals' Huge Announcement

Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Kansas City Royals' Huge Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has always been an avid sports fan beyond the football field. Advertisement While he's been spotted supporting teams from his home state of Texas—like the Dallas Mavericks and his alma mater, Texas Tech—he's also been a vocal supporter of the Kansas City Royals. On Sunday night, Mahomes reacted to a major announcement from the Royals with excitement. The Royals, fresh off a 2024 playoff appearance, are currently 31-29 and sitting in fourth place in the AL Central. With the season in full swing, the team is set to receive a much-needed boost. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Royals have officially announced the call-up of slugger Jac Caglianone—the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft and the No. 10 prospect on MLB Pipeline. Caglianone has been tearing through the minor leagues, making a quick and impressive rise through the Royals' farm system. In just 50 games between Double-A and Triple-A, Caglianone is slashing .322/.389/.593 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs—an explosive start to his professional career. Advertisement The announcement sparked an instant reaction from Mahomes, who shared his excitement on social media by retweeting the news with a popular GIF from The Office that says, 'Oh my God! Okay, it's happening.' Check it out: Mahomes has always had baseball in his blood. His father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was a Major League pitcher whose career spanned from 1992 to 2003. He played for several teams, including the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He also spent time playing professionally in Japan. While he was primarily used at first base, he also showed effectiveness on the mound for the Gators. Advertisement Although it doesn't appear the Royals plan to use him as a two-way player—at least not right away—Caglianone brings a much-needed spark to the lineup. He now joins a promising group that includes young superstar Bobby Witt Jr., slugger Vinnie Pasquantino, and veteran catcher Salvador Perez. Pittsburgh Steelers Ex 5th-Round Running Back Released From CFL Team

Pittsburgh Steelers Ex 5th-Round Running Back Released From CFL Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and fifth-round draft pick Jaylen Samuels is once again looking for a new home. Advertisement Samuels signed with the CFL's Ottawa Redblacks early last month but was released over the weekend as part of the team's final roster cuts. Samuels was one of 21 players cut. The 28-year-old was drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round at No. 165 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. The former NC State Gamecocks running back played for Pittsburgh for three seasons, appearing in 14 games each year, spreading out eight starts. He totaled 459 yards rushing on 131 attempts with one touchdown. Samuel left Pittsburgh to join the Houston Texans in 2021 before signing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. He was cut before the season started that season. Advertisement He went back to Houston to join the XFL's Roughnecks in 2022 and then to San Antonio to the UFL's Brahamas in the 2024 UFL Draft. The Redblacks finished 2024 at 9-8-1 and in third place in the East Division, losing 58-38 to the Toronto Argonauts in the East Semifinal game of the playoffs. Samuel was without a team until the Redblacks came calling from the Great White North. At 28, he should still have a ton of football left in him, and he's now available to join any other team as a free agent - either in Canada or the US - to continue his career. As the UFL season is entering its playoffs, his opportunity there might come next season if he decides that's a path he'd like to follow. Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs

Former Oregon QB Turning Heads During NFL OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Fans of the Oregon Ducks are likely clamoring for more after enjoying one of the best seasons in the history of the football program. They navigated the regular season, going undefeated through their first year in the Big Ten Conference after moving from the Pac-12. Advertisement The Ducks continued to impress after defeating the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Big Ten Championship game. Their dominance landed them the No. 1 overall pick in the College Football Playoff. However, the extra time off may have been detrimental, as they went from December 7, until New Year's Day without a game after four months playing essentially every week and fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were coming off a win over Tennessee. Former Oregon QB turning heads in NFL OTAs Dillon Gabriel was the leader of the high-flying Oregon offense and was eventually selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. However, a different former Ducks quarterback has been turning heads in NFL OTAs. Advertisement According to FOX 8 New Orleans' Sean Fazende, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has made an impression. "Shough looks very comfortable with vertical routes & out-breaking patterns," Fazende said on "His best throw may have been an incompletion where he rolled to his left and threw off platform to the sideline. Right now, not quite as comfortable in intermediate middle of field." Shough spent three seasons with the Ducks. In his first two, he was backing up Justin Herbert before being handed the reins. He eventually transferred to Texas Tech and then Louisville before the Saints took him in the second round. After Derek Carr's sudden retirement, Shough is now a candidate to win the starting job with Spencer Rattler. Advertisement It remains to be seen what kind of chance Shough truly has to win the starting job, but after watching Rattler in parts of last season, the Saints could decide to give him a chance.
