Sanjay Manjrekar on Rishabh Pant's aggression: ‘He should get that license because he deserves it'

Manjrekar also said Gill needs to introspect a bit in the long gap between the Lord's Test and the Old Trafford Test. 'I feel he has the ability to carry form. Maybe there will be some introspection in this gap. He should look at whether the altercation was necessary or should he just focus on captaincy. If he does that, then his run-making machine will run again at Old Trafford,' Manjrekar observed.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Gill accused the English batters of deliberately wasting time by coming 90 seconds late to the crease and then calling the physio to slow the game further. 'Yes, a lot of people have been talking about it. So, let me just clear the air once and for all. The English batsmen on that day, they had 7 minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20, 90 seconds late. Yes, most of the teams, they use this,' Gill said. 'We had no intention of doing that whatsoever. But you are playing a game, you are playing to win and there are a lot of emotions involved. And when you see there are things happening that should not happen, sometimes the emotions come out of nowhere.' Shubman Gill also gave an update on the Indian team combination for the must-win fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. 'Akash Deep is unavailable, so is Arshdeep, but we have good players in the team to pick twenty wickets. It is not ideal to have different bowlers but I was prepared,' he said. On the possibility of a debut for young pacer Anshul Kamboj, Gill said the decision will be made on the morning of the match. 'He is very close to making his debut. We will see between Prasidh and Anshul tomorrow,' Gill confirmed. Karun Nair to return to home state Karnataka for the upcoming domestic season
Batter Karun Nair is set to return to his home state of Karnataka for the upcoming domestic season, having obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA). Karun, who is currently with the Indian Test team in England, spent two fruitful seasons with Vidarbha. The 33-year-old made runs aplenty in Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy title run earlier this year. Karun also led Vidarbha to the Vijay Hazare Trophy final. His fine form earned him a Test cap after a gap of eight years. Karun will add experience to a young Karnataka batting lineup, which includes the likes of Devdutt Padikkal, R. Smaran and K.V. Aneesh. Karnataka suffered a disappointing 2024-25 Ranji Trophy campaign, failing to make it to the knockout stages. Karun made his senior debut with Karnataka in 2012 (in a List A game), and last featured in a First Class match for Karnataka in 2022.

Lakshya Sen to train at French National training centre INSEP ahead of World Championships
Beleaguered Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen will reach Paris early ahead of the World Championships in August and train at their National Centre, INSEP (National Institute of Sport, Expertise & Performance). Sen hasn't quite made the quarterfinals on the circuit in recent months, but believes that his preparation has been steadfast after emerging from a tough few months, dealing with shoulder and back injuries. He is hopeful of continuing a good tryst with Paris where he made the bronze playoffs at the 2024 Olympics. 'Overall I've done good work recently. Few more weeks of good training and preparation before we get to the World Championship,' he told BWF. 'It's one of the good, more suited stadiums to my game. I'm extra motivated for the World Championship. It's a good place to play, good conditions, I've done well before. So ya hoping I continue a good run there. Important next few months,' he said, adding, 'Also going bit early to France to adjust to time zone. Will train at INSEP (National Institute of Sport, Expertise & Performance)' Sen has sent his entry for the Macau Open but there is no clarity if he will play or skip the tournament preparing for the Worlds where he has a bronze from 2021. He rued his missed opportunities against Li Shifeng in the opener at Chiba Open, but was happy with how he was moving around the court. 'Ya it was a good match. I was playing well. Starting from the beginning had a good start. Second set I didn't start very well. But got my rhythm back. I had two match points in my hand. But unlucky to not close in second set,' Sen tolf BWF. 'Third set I didn't get a good start and then it was really tough to get back into the game. And he was also quite solid. After winning second set he was much more confident. And I had to put the shuttle down in the third set. But I had my chances in the second. Overall a little disappointed but looking forward to next tournament,' he said. Sen was especially happy with his speed. 'Physically I was 100 percent today. But past few months have been tough so trying to get back to full training. Today's match was a good example of…gave me good confidence that I can play again at the highest level with that speed again the ..past few months struggled a bit, in moving that well on the court. Happy I could move just build on that,' he added.
