Russell Martin to Rangers path is clear as Davide Ancelotti talks 'break down'

Daily Record2 days ago

The former Southampton boss looks increasingly likely to be the man the new owners will name as Philippe Clement's successor
Frontrunner Russell Martin appears to have his path cleared to become Rangers manager after talks with Davide Ancelotti have "broken down."
Former Southampton boss Martin looks set to be given the chance to spearhead the American revolution at Ibrox following the takeover by US tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

Ancelotti and Martin had been left as the main two contenders to become Philippe Clement's permanent successor after sporting director Kevin Thelwell revealed a decision was days away.

But MARCA claim that the former Real Madrid assistant has met with directors at the Scottish Premiership giants but "everything has changed."
Ancelotti ally and Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claimed that if Rangers chiefs did not reach a decision by the end of last week or by the first week of June at the latest the club "risk missing out on Ancelotti" with other clubs showing interest.
That appears to have come to fruition as "negotiations with Rangers have broken down" and the Italian now considering his options with Deportivo "interested" and Como considering Ancelotti as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas if he joins Inter.
Fabregas' decision to move to the San Siro could also impact on Francesco Farioli - who was reportedly under consideration for the Light Blues' job after leaving Ajax.
Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Farioli has been "offered" to the Champions League finalists following the departure of Simone Inzaghi following the heavy 5-0 defeat to PSG in Munich.

Farioli is being "evaluated" as an option with Fabregas the frontrunner at this stage - while La Provincia report that a meeting with Como higher-ups has been arranged with Rangers' hopes of snagging the boss fading.
It all leaves Martin as the leading contender to step into the vacancy - with former Norwich City teammate Steven Naismith claiming the Scotland cap is the best man for the job.
He told Sky Sports: "From every name linked with the job, I think he probably ticks the most boxes for what's required at the moment.

"The most common thing I would imagine everybody has heard is the leadership aspect. That was very clear from the first time I played with him.
"He's a leader. I know he's spoken about his people skills and things like that. He knows how to get the best out of players and staff. Behind the scenes at Norwich, he was a big part of what their success was as a club.
"On top of that, his knowledge and intelligence of the game is very good. He's had real belief. He's a brilliant communicator. I think that's been the clearest thing at each club very quickly - that style, you can identify it, you can see it.
"I think a few of the fans at Rangers will remember him as a player, and that's probably not the best image of him. Because, as a coach, he's the opposite of what he was as a player.
"As a coach, he's a forward-thinking coach, and that for me is the biggest benefit."

The three unseen figures that 'prepared' Martin for Rangers job

The 39-year-old named late kitman Jimmy Bell, masseur David Lavery and physio Steve Walker as men who told him stories of what to expect. Martin was unveiled as the club's new head coach on Thursday as he reflected on his previous Rangers stint: "My period here before it was incredible learning for me," he said. Read more: "It helped me so much on my journey about culture, about what to expect, about what's required. And listening to Jimmy Bell, the kitman, tell me stories. And Disco [David Lavery], who's been here for years, and people like that. And Stevie [Walker] the physio, and listening to them talking about it. It just whetted my appetite even more. So I learned a lot when I was here. And it's helped me prepare for it now." Martin has already outlined his summer plans for Rangers, admitting he wants to sign one or two players before their first Champions League qualifier comes around next month. "There are a few positions where we'll need to strengthen fairly quickly and fairly early on," he told Sky Sports. "I'm also willing to be surprised and I'm open to being surprised by some of the players we have here. "I think the way we're going to try and work and play is going to give them the best chance to show us what they've got and to give us the best version of themselves and hopefully one or two surprises. "We'll need some help before that game for sure, but until we get in here and assess everyone, how many we'll need before the game or how realistic that is because football and the business and transfer window can be difficult. "I'm pretty sure by then we'll have one or two people [in], to help us add to the group."

Former Southampton boss Ivan Juric appointed Atalanta manager

Ivan Juric has been appointed as Atalanta's next first-team manager just a couple of months on from presiding over Southampton's relegation from the Premier League. The Croatian endured a dreadful tenure at St Mary's after taking the reins, four days before Christmas last year, winning just two of 16 matches and immediately resigning when their relegation was confirmed. Before that, Juric had an ill-fated two-month stint at Roma from September to November 2024 but he has now signed a deal until June 30, 2027, to replace Gian Piero Gasperini at the Gewiss Stadium. Welcome, Mister Jurić ⚫🔵 #GoAtalantaGo — Atalanta B.C. (@Atalanta_BC) June 6, 2025 He has big shoes to fill in Bergamo as Gasperini guided Atalanta to a third-place finish in Serie A to secure a spot in next season's Champions League, while he won the Europa League with them in 2023-24. Juric – whose coaching CV includes three separate stints at Genoa in two-and-a-half years, followed by spells at Hellas Verona and Torino – will officially start his role from July 1. 'Atalanta BC is delighted to announce that Ivan Juric will be the club's new men's first-team manager, starting from 1 July 2025,' a statement on the club's website read.
