Santacruz-Chembur Link Road Extension Expected to Open on August 14
Sources said that the final leg of this project is ready for opening. The formal inauguration event may happen on Aug14, a day before Independence Day.
Executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the new link will create a direct, signal-free route from Kurla to Panbai School near the airport, connecting the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) to the Western Express Highway (WEH). Motorists can expect to save at least 15–20 minutes during peak hours, besides reducing fuel consumption.
The corridor is also expected to decongest Vakola, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), and LBS Marg.

A key highlight of the project is its landmark cable-stayed bridge — the first in South Asia to feature a sharp horizontal curve of 100 metres. The structure comprises a 215-metre-long orthotropic steel deck rising 25 metres above the WEH. Its two-lane carriageway, varying from 10.5m to 17.2m in width, is supported by a Y-shaped pylon that eliminates mid-span piers.
This design safeguards critical infrastructure below, including Metro Line 3 tunnels and underground utilities.
MMRDA officials said the bridge was designed not only to address current traffic bottlenecks but also to integrate seamlessly with the upcoming Phase II expansion of the SCLR network. The project includes upgraded junctions, improved drainage, and new pedestrian facilities.
The original SCLR, opened in 2014, halved travel time between Chembur and Santacruz, but the missing western link meant commuters faced long delays at Vakola and Kalina. With the extension ready, traffic police are expected to issue fresh advisories and recalibrate signal timings to manage the anticipated surge in vehicles.

Kolhapur: The state cabinet approved Rs 18 crore to ensure air travellers from Solapur can travel to Pune and Mumbai at a subsidised rate of Rs 3,240 per seat, covering 100% of the operational cost of the service. The refurbished Solapur airport commenced flight operations with the Solapur-Goa route. However, despite several efforts, airline operators were hesitant to provide regular air services from Solapur to Mumbai and Pune, citing unaffordable ticket prices as the airport is not included in the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme for regional connectivity. To make air travel between Solapur and Pune and Solapur and Mumbai viable, state govt decided to grant a subsidy per seat to offset operational losses and make air travel affordable for people. "For one year, govt will provide a viability gap funding subsidy of Rs 3,240 per seat with a total budget of Rs 17.9 crore. After one year, the airport will come under the UDAN scheme and, thereafter, the state will grant 20% of the travel fares as per the UDAN scheme guidelines, and the viability gap funding will cease to exist," said the cabinet decision. A Goa-based airline currently operates flights on four days of the week — Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — from the Solapur airport. The flight lands at Mopa airport. A senior airport official said, "The discussions are on with other private air service providers to start services for connecting flights between Solapur, Pune, and Mumbai. FASTag made mandatory for vehicles entering Tirumala from Aug 15
Tirupati: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has made FASTag, a radio frequency identification technology-based system for e-toll collection in the prepaid digital format, mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala through the Alipiri tollgate from Aug 15. The temple trust said the decision was taken to provide better safety standards, prevent overcrowding, and offer transparent services to devotees arriving in own or rented vehicles at the Alipiri check point. A FASTag issuance kiosk has been set up at the Alipiri check point for those who do not have FASTag on their vehicles. TTD's vigilance and security wing clarified that the security frisking mechanisms in place at Alipiri tollgate will remain as they are irrespective of the mode of toll collection. While there are twin pedestrian routes leading to Tirumala, Alipiri happens to be the only gateway to Tirumala as far as vehicular traffic is concerned. TTD collects two-way toll fees from vehicles plying along the twin ghat roads. With close to 8,000 vehicles entering Tirumala through the Alipiri tollgate during normal days and around 12,000-15,000 vehicles heading to the hill shrine during weekends, holidays, and important festive occasions, manual collection of toll fees at Alipiri often leads to traffic jams. Devotees have welcomed the move to facilitate digital payments through FASTag, which will enable faster collection of toll fees without manual intervention and lead to a hassle-free passage following the security frisking at Alipiri tollgate. To keep ticket costs within reach on flights between Mumbai and Solapur, Maharashtra govt to make available Rs 3,240 per seat
Mumbai: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved the provision of viability gap funding (VGF) per seat for a year on the lines of the UDAN scheme for the Solapur-Pune-Mumbai air route. The Centre launched the UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme) to make air travel affordable for common people. This scheme will also be implemented for Solapur airport. Until the implementation of this scheme, funds will be made available as viability gap at the rate of Rs 3,240 per seat (100% VGF) for a year. This will help reduce the cost of air travel on the Solapur-Pune-Mumbai route, said officials. A provision of Rs 17.97 crore will be made for this. In areas that previously had few or no flights for connectivity, the govt is attempting to increase regional air travel, enhance connectivity, and foster economic growth with this strategy. Since its launch on Oct 21, 2016, UDAN effectively ran flights on about 601 itineraries and 71 airports, increasing the affordability and accessibility of air travel for the typical Indian tourist.
