Thokar, who had legally entered Pakistan via the Attari-Wagah border in 2018, reportedly underwent terrorist training there before clandestinely returning to India last year. The news report indicates that he acted as a logistics coordinator and guide for the Pakistani militants who executed the attack. Shaikh's involvement is also under investigation.
The Anantnag Police have announced a reward of ₹20 lakh for information leading to the capture of three Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives: Adil Hussain Thokar, Ali Bhai, and Hashim Musa. All three are suspected of planning and executing the Pahalgam attack on April 22.
Pahalgam terror attack
The mass shooting, which left at least 26 dead and several others injured, is the deadliest such incident since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
The attack took place in Baisaran Meadow, a popular destination roughly 7 km from the town of Pahalgam, where foreign militants dressed in Indian Army uniforms opened fire on unarmed tourists.
Survivors recounted chilling details, including the attackers demanding that individuals recite Islamic verses before executing them at close range.
India-Pakistan relations strain
In the wake of the massacre, diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have been strained. India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, while Pakistan has suspended the Simla Agreement. Both nations have halted visa issuance, significantly reduced diplomatic presence, and closed the Wagah border for trade and travel.
Global leaders have also strongly condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims, most of whom were tourists. Meanwhile, the manhunt for the perpetrators continues, as security forces tighten their grip on militancy in the Kashmir Valley.

Kangana Ranaut's plea to quash defamation case rejected by HC
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday dismissed a plea of BJP MP Kangana Ranaut seeking quashing of a defamation complaint against her and the summoning order by a court in Bathinda. Mahinder Kaur alleges that Kangana Ranaut defamed her in the tweet by identifying her wrongly as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame.(PTI) The actor-turned-politician had challenged the defamation case which stemmed from her retweet consisting of her own comment about the complainant during the 2020-21 farmer protests against the now repealed farm laws. The complaint was filed by Mahinder Kaur (73) of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Punjab's Bathinda district in 2021. She had alleged that Ranaut defamed her in the tweet by identifying her wrongly as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame. Ranaut linked Shaheen Bagh dadi to farmers' protest Ranaut shared the tweet alleging that the 'Shaheen Bagh dadi' also joined the farmers' agitation at various border points of the national capital. "There are specific allegations against the petitioner who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent's reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide," Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya mentioned in the order while dismissing Ranaut's plea. "... A reading of the impugned order as a whole, makes it apparent that the Magistrate (Bathinda court) has duly applied mind to the material on record, and only after recording satisfaction that commission of offence under Sections 499 IPC is prima facie made out against the petitioner, the process has been issued..," the order reads. Ranaut moved HC to quash defamation case The petition was filed before the high court under Section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure seeking quashing of complaint filed under Section 499/500 Indian Penal Code and also the summoning order dated February 22, 2022 by the lower court.

'Balanced', 'forward-looking': Pakistan hails 19% tariffs under US trade deal
Pakistan on Friday announced that the US has imposed a 19 per cent tariff on its exports and termed the step as a "balanced and forward-looking" move that enhances the country's competitiveness in the American market. ADVERTISEMENT The new rate is down from the previous 29 per cent tariff announced by US President Donald Trump. Welcoming the "successful conclusion" of the tariff-related discussions with the US, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said, "As per the outcome of these talks, a tariff of 19 per cent will be applicable for Pakistani exports to the US market." The decision reflected a "balanced and forward-looking approach by the US authorities, keeping Pakistan competitive relative to other South and Southeast Asian countries", it said. The ministry said the revised tariff level is expected to support Pakistan's export potential, especially in key sectors such as textiles, "which remain the backbone of the country's export economy". Pakistan's exports to the US rose by 11.06 per cent to USD 5.552 billion from USD 4.999 billion in the first 11 months of the last fiscal. ADVERTISEMENT The ministry said the current tariff presented a "significant opportunity to expand Pakistan's footprint in the US market". "It is now essential for Pakistani exporters and trade bodies to adopt an aggressive and focused marketing strategy to capitalise on this development," it said. "The Government of Pakistan looks forward to further positive engagements and close cooperation with the United States in the areas of investment, artificial intelligence, crypto currency, mines and minerals, energy, and other emerging sectors," it said. The revised tariff for Pakistan came after the US and Islamabad finalised a trade deal in Washington on Wednesday. However, it was not immediately clear what massive oil reserves in Pakistan Trump was referring to. Meanwhile, Khurram Schehzad, Adviser to Pakistan's Finance Minister, in a social media post said, "Pakistan is possibly the only country which the US has offered its investments as well, besides a competitive trade deal." The "deal signals a strategic deepening of economic ties and shared growth", he said. Pakistan has long claimed to have large oil deposits along its coast, but no progress has been made to tap those deposits. It has been trying to lure in investments to tap into these reserves. The country currently imports oil from the Middle East to meet its energy demands. President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order that raised tariffs for over five dozen countries with Washington's negotiations for trade deals went down to the wire ahead of the August 1 deadline. The tariffs in the list range from 10 per cent to 40 per cent, with Japan being charged 15 per cent, Laos and Myanmar (40 per cent each), Sri Lanka (20 per cent) and the United Kingdom (10 per cent).

SC orders Army Medical College to pay stipend arrears to 2022 MBBS interns
New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Delhi-based Army College of Medical Sciences (ACMS) to pay arrears of Rs 25,000 per month to MBBS interns from the 2022 batch, saying they deserved it as a 'matter of right". A bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar passed the order while hearing a petition filed by medical graduate Abhishek Yadav and others through lawyer Tanvi Dubey. The top court observed that despite a September 2023 order mandating a stipend of Rs. 25,000 per month for interns starting October 2023, the previous batch had been left uncompensated. At the outset, Justice Dhulia questioned senior advocate R Balasubramanian, appearing for ACMS, as to why the 2022 interns had not been paid, even after nearly three years. 'Why will you pay a stipend? They deserve it as a matter of right," the judge said. Justice Kumar also strongly criticized the stand of the ACMS and said, 'You make them work for 18 hours, 19 hours, and you don't want to pay them a stipend?" Balasubramanian contended that the college is managed by a private society and does not receive government funding. The bench remained unconvinced and said, 'These students have worked for the college. They must be paid." It proceeded to record a statement of Balasubramanian that the Army College would extend the same Rs 25,000 stipend to all interns, including the 2022 batch. Citing previous orders passed by a three-judge bench, it ordered that similarly placed students should not be denied benefits. 'We are of the opinion that the same benefit ought to be given to the previous batch as well… We direct that interns of 2022, who had done their internship with Army Medical College, also be paid an amount of Rs. 25,000 per month. Let the same be calculated and paid within eight weeks," the bench ordered. Dubey also brought to the attention of the court the plight of the foreign medical graduates and said that it is a case of bonded labour if they do not get the stipend. The bench asked as to why after rigorous hours the students are yet not paid stipend. It also directed that the matter pertaining to foreign medical graduates be also listed urgently for final arguments.
