KAPs Told To Intensify Promotion Of Anti-Corruption Initiatives
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) National Governance Planning Division senior director Datuk Idris Zaharudin said the move was important to demonstrate the government's commitment to continuously improving governance, combating corruption, and fostering a positive perception among the public at both national and international levels.
He said that during the NACS Performance Coordination Meetings held on Nov 11, 2024, and June 10 this year, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had underscored the need for greater promotion and publicity.
According to him, NACS, like the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP), was recognised as one of the contributing factors in enhancing Malaysia's ranking in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), in line with the aspirations of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
'The establishment of the CPI Special Task Force, chaired by Shamsul Azri, is a positive step towards monitoring and improving the country's score, while also reflecting continuous efforts by all parties, not just the MACC, to combat corruption effectively and restore public confidence in government institutions,' he said while chairing the Joint Engagement Session with 19 KAPs here today.
Meanwhile, Idris said the MACC chief commissioner had congratulated nine KAPs, including the commission itself, for successfully completing the implementation of 10 sub-strategies under their respective scopes of responsibility.
'Five sub-strategies were successfully completed in 2024, while the remaining five were completed by 30 June,' he said.
On July 9, Idris chaired the CPI Special Task Force Pre-Council Meeting in preparation for the main meeting, which was chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Government on July 15.
The meeting on 15 July was also attended by Azam and members of the CPI Special Task Force, comprising secretaries-general of ministries, heads of departments and government agencies, as well as representatives from Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) and appointed experts.

Dr M to govt: Reveal Daim's alleged offences
KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on the government to reveal the crimes Tun Daim Zainuddin is alleged to have committed. Dr Mahathir said this as Daim's reputation continued to be questioned even after the former finance minister's passing last November. In his statement, Dr Mahathir alluded to the probe into Daim's undeclared assets. The NST previously reported that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission was looking into property and assets linked to Daim in 11 countries. Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that at least RM4.5 billion in assets linked to Daim had been traced in several countries, including RM758 million in the United Kingdom. MACC is seeking to seize and forfeit assets worth more than RM3 billion. "Tun Daim is gone, he cannot defend himself," Dr Mahathir said in a statement. "Everyone knows Daim was rich before becoming a minister, and was in the process of surrendering his business interests when he was appointed a minister." Dr Mahathir said Daim only restarted doing business after he was no longer a minister. "Daim did business abroad to avoid being accused of receiving special privileges," he said, adding that Daim had not been linked to any scandal in the countries he did business in.

Don't let foreigners misuse business licences, warns Nga
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must not allow their citizenship to be misused by foreigners to obtain business licences, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said from January 2023 to July this year, 3,703 enforcement operations were carried out against business premises involving foreign workers. "Malaysian citizens must uphold the Rukun Negara and safeguard the nation's identity from being exploited," he said in reply to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said 14,834 compounds were issued, 23 licences terminated, and 2,880 premises seized due to licence violations. He explained that government policies were for the benefit of Malaysians and not foreigners, while clarifying that the ministry had never issued such licences to foreigners. "The local authorities and the government have never allowed foreigners to apply and obtain licences for hawker stalls, small businesses, business premises, retail shops, restaurants, car workshops and markets," he said. He added that foreigners were also not allowed to work at premises owned by the local authorities, as citizens were meant to earn an income through the local authorities' premises. "The local authorities will not compromise with any violation of the terms of the licence issued. Strict action such as seizures, compounds, shutting down of premises and termination of licences will be taken," he said.

It's SWCorp's numbers, not mine, says Nga on rubbish left by July 26 rally
KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has defended his statement that 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left behind following the 'Turun Anwar' rally. Nga said the figures were based on findings by the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp), whose personnel were mobilised on the ground. 'The numbers did not come from me, but from SWCorp. Hundreds of workers were mobilised to clear the rubbish after the rally,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 28). Nga added that he did not deny the efforts of *Unit Amal* members who also helped with the cleanup. 'I appreciate their help and thank them. But I also cannot deny that 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left behind across Sogo, Dataran Merdeka, and even Petaling Street.' He was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Awang Hashim (PN–Pendang), who disputed the figures and asked the minister to clarify. 'It's not true. We checked everything,' said the Opposition MP. Nga had previously shared the cleanup figures in a post on X (formerly Twitter), which drew criticism from some quarters. Rebutting Awang's remarks, Nga reiterated that the numbers came directly from SWCorp and were not fabricated. 'Even their chief executive officer was on the ground working late into the night,' he said, while stressing the ministry's firm stance against littering. The rally, held on July 26, reportedly drew a crowd of about 18,000, according to Kuala Lumpur police.
